Line wasn't painful. No food, drinks or bags. There is a coffee shop next to the line up area. Hint - think about what you wear to show up. If you dress like a bag of donuts your going to be hidden in the back row. If you want to get on TV, and your in a group.. all wear same outfit. Makes you move to front of line. E.g. group was on family vacation and had T-shirts made, yep, front of line express. Take a look to see who is going to be on the broadcast so you have an idea of who is passing you in hallway and getting out of the car service. Good hosts at a GMA. Entire cast was friendly and went out of way to thank people for attending and watching show. I wish it would have had Oprah, might have gotten a new car rather than the book an author was giving away. All in alll - it's an NYC bucket list- plenty of shows to watch live, just got to plan ahead and go with flow.

I signed up to be one of the people in the crowd of the GMA audience during a fall trip to the Big Apple. Attendees have to be in line by about 6 in the morning, and for my taping, they didn't let us into the studios till about a little after 8. Once you get into the studios, they spread you around and if you want any shot of being on camera, you have to try nudge your way to the front or bring a big colorful sign to wave frantically in the air. Sadly, I failed on both these attempts so the most that could be made of me on TV was that person whose top of the head would peek out between a sea of people every once in awhile. There goes my attempt at my 15 minutes of fame. Shucks. The whole taping process is pretty interesting. You don't actually get to see the full taping. For certain parts of the show, like the weather segment, one of the cast will come down and do their bit. At most, it was about 5 minutes for each segment. The cast was very friendly though and when the tapings would break, they would come and say hello to the crowd and take pictures. For my particular taping, there was a peformance by Kenny Chesney. I'm not a big fan of country music, so it wasn't as entertaining for me. But he played a few songs for the crowd which is pretty cool. By 9AM, everything sort of wraps up and you are on your merry way to enjoy the rest of your day. Remember to TIVO or DVR the episode so that you can watch to see if you made it on camera. Not that anyone should rush to sponsor a telethon for this cash cow but their days of being a highly paid staple in cable lineups are drawing to a close. Soon they may be jettisoned by Disney meaning you'll finally be able to stream the full spectrum of ESPN networks without a cable bundle and for many, that will be the final snip in the cable cord. As an avid sports fan I find most of their coverage a hypertensive, over-the-top, scream-a-thon somehow believing the louder they shriek (or the hotter their take) the more you'll stay glued to the set. And let's not even talk about SportsCenter whose highlight reel has taught almost three generations of athletes to preen and posture for the camera honing their catchphrases. On balance, Hockey and the NFL are reasonable but as a baseball fan their weekly games are best experienced on mute. As for the NBA, their coverage (along with ABC) has been a lost cause for quite some time. It's hard to believe that their first program way back in 1979 was log rolling financed through credit card cash advances by Bill Rasmussen who founded the network. I have a feeling he has paid off his credit cards. Five stars just for the balz it took to do it.
