John Boy's isn't just a diner--it's a portal. One foot in Americana, one in a dream. The menu reads…read morelike a manifesto: sprawling, obsessive, oddly precise. Every dish arrives like it's been summoned by memory. The bacon is crisp, the toast knows something, and the omelets are heavy with intention. The dining room is small, dimly lit, and full of quiet drama. The regulars speak in half-smiles, and the staff greets you like they've seen your face before--in another life, maybe. Alpena doesn't have many restaurants. That's the mystery. You drive around expecting more, but there's a stillness here. A pause. And then--John Boy's. Waiting. Before leaving, i purchased 2 sets of wings, a bunch of brats and some polish sausages. pricing is pretty good (especially for the cooked sausages) but it definitely adds up when buying the frozen items. They have 6 types of sausages for the picking and they're: Festival Classic Potato Spicy Cajun Sauerkraut Cheddarwurst Beer Brat Not sure if they rotate the flavors though. Anyways, picked a bun and a Festival Sausage (From what it tasted like, it was bell peppers infused. Next up they had a topping station and it was all the condiments you could think of putting on a hot dog. I specifically got this Corn Relish and it was dreamy, the sweet snap of the corn with the hint of relished veggies .(Highly recommend) At the end of the counter is where you'll pay and it's simple as that. The whole process reminded me of chipotle but a self serve version and with hot dogs. There's also an ice cream shop adjacent to the counter and if you're feeling sweet after a savory hot dog, then it's the perfect place for salty and sweet lovers.

The onion soup was really cheesy which I like and the broth wasn't overly salty. The strawberry rhubarb pie to end the meal was packed, though just a bit too sweet. Overall service was friendly and efficient. The Codmothers has offers you just can't refuse. You do pay a bit more for it though. The food was tasty, even if the menu was limited. We ate the mussels, tacos and a burger, and it was all tasty and we all left happy. The drinks were over priced for what we got, they were fine enough tasting but nothing special. Parking is very limited, we ended up parking down the street in a public lot and walking 3-4 minutes. Not a big deal, but it did take us a few minutes to sort it out. I'm glad we went, we got to enjoy a good meal on the water.
