Sketchy, unreliable, rude. I did a preliminary Meth Residue test of the duplex I've rented for 13.5…read moreyrs. after suspecting my health issues, Mother's health & pets health issues were related to possible Meth residue. I called numerous meth clean up companies as well as laboratories & read hundreds of articles & several dozen calls to educate myself on Meth residue to decide what test kit I would use. It was recommended I do a preliminary test first. I purchased a MethAssure Laboratory Analyzed Meth Test Kit from The Meth Lab Clean Up Company who was recommended by two different laboratories. This test is said to have no false positives. On 4/26/19 the results came back positive for all rooms with one area being over twice the allowed limits. I immediately notified my landlord. After several emails & notes on my rent payments with no response, in November I sent my rent with a letter certified; only then did I get response. The landlord came out on 10/14/19 & stated they were going to hire a company to come out to retest. This company was A Best Enviro. & they were supposed to call me to set up an appt. A Best called on 10/24/19 & was all flustered on the phone & seemed to have trouble constructing a sentence. He claimed they had scheduling issues & said they had someone in the area & wanted to come right over. I said that's a problem, I am not home & I have an appt to get to. I started to ask questions about the test kit they use & he became even more flustered after I said I was planning on having an Idaho based Lab Cleanup Company to do a third party test after they tested. He said "Joe?" & I said yes. He said he would have his scheduler call me to set up an appt time. I never received a call back from A Best Enviro. nor from my landlord & I couldn't just move, because any possible contamination on my belongings would be transferred to a new place. On 11/20/19 my landlord said their inspector & A Best would be out on 11/22/19. On 11/22/19 I went to the door & a female grabbed the screen door out of my hand & started to enter. I said "& you are?" And she rudely said "I'm with A Best Enviromental, you should have known I was coming!". I said, "but you didn't introduce yourself & I don't know who you are." (Due to homeless people in the area, who constantly come to the door asking for things, how did I know). I was talking to the rental inspector & was trying to keep an eye on this A Best employee to see how she tested for Meth residue when I noticed the test kit & I said that looks similar to the test kit I used (though her templates were slightly larger) she got snotty & quipped "I have been doing this for 20 years!" I just kept my mouth shut even tho I wanted to say a monkey could do your job; the instructions are simple, clear & precise & if you follow the instructions it is virtually impossible to do it wrong or cause cross contamination. I documented where she placed templates and she put them on obvious locations that I had been scrubbing weekly for 7 months after the MethAssure lab test results were positive; these areas were scrubbed often since I touch those areas the most. She should have been testing higher up on the wall & cupboards for a more accurate result. And who comes unprepared without a step stool & uses your toilet as a step ladder; it took me 4 days to force the toilet lid back on. She placed a template on the fan cover that I clean every week due to toilet paper dust build up that clogs the air flow. That cover is going to have a lower concentration of residue than up the wall due to the fact it was scrubbed with bleach almost every week for over 13 years. And what business would only tests one side of a duplex when the reason I initially tested for Meth residue was due to the horrific smell like rotting dead fish mixed with burning rubber/trash, that was emitting from the garage of the other half of the duplex & the common wall is our bedroom, bathroom, kitchen area? Meth residue seeps through cracks/crevices in walls, ventilation such as fans in bath & kitchen, common attic space. I turned my attention back to the rental inspector after trying to take images of where she had placed the templates because that is not where three other meth cleanup companies told me to place templates. After all was said & done they both left; i went into the bathroom to get ready to go check on an elderly family member & noticed my watch was gone! Kitchen: red scissors gone. I know it was not the inspector, because we were next to each other the entire time & A Best Enviro. was the only one to go into any room by herself. It can not be replaced for it was given to me by my deceased Mother. I intend to contact The Meth Lab Cleanup Company in Idaho who does Meth residue testing as well as Meth clean up all over the US, since two labs stated they were the best & you get what your pay for. I will follow up later on how professional this other company performs.

Other companies have done a roof and gutter cleaning before. Sounds either he just did not want the job or was not competent enough to do it properly. What really ticked me off was that he did not even bother to knock on the door and speak to me personally.

Two days later I had a detailed bid that included some of the options I had asked them to consider (I asked if a specific modification would work for my layout). I told them I had to wait for a specific event and would get back to them in 4-6 weeks. They checked in a couple of times during that wait but only in a friendly, non-pushing way. By the time I had the funds, I needed some additional clarification about items on the bid. Called them and they came back out and walked through with me answering all of my questions. I put half down to get on their schedule (2 weeks out). They made a confirmation call. Showed up right on time. Were very hard workers for two solid days. I was working from home and checked on the progress. They had scheduled the city inspector for late the afternoon of the second day and they were finished on time for that successful inspection. They explained how to reset the automatic gas shut-off if needed. They did a great job of cleaning up. I had put up tarps but they added some drop clothes and carried away all the debris. There was some dust from the sheetrock they had to remove but not much at all. It was a great experience. We have a lot of our net worth in this house and it feels better to know this 1925 home is bolted to the foundation, has the beams strapped to the posts, has additional hot water tank bracing, and has an automatic gas shut-off that I can reset as needed without having to wait (with potentially thousands of others) for the gas company to turn back on the gas. Good luck on your evaluation and research.

We had several different earthquake retrofit companies come out to give us quotes, and earthquake…read moretech gave us the best solution. The other firms recommended approaching from the inside which would require demo-ing into our finished basement walls and likely leave unsightly brackets poking out in different places. Earthquake tech recommended a solution approaching from the outside - taking down siding to place brackets and reinforce the cripple wall, then replacing the siding. We have cedar shake siding and I was concerned there would be a lot of damage, but they seemed experienced with siding work. They consulted with an engineer on the plans, which not all the firms did, and helped give us peace of mind that the planned additions will offer the necessary support as we live on a pretty steep slope. The crew came out as scheduled and were able to do the bulk of the work over the first two days. Some of the finishing work took a little longer due to weather, which was okay as the crew was pretty independent on doing the work while we were gone and only occasionally needed access to the inside of the house. The company even ordered new siding to replace the broken ones and repainted them once the weather dried out some, which we were expecting to have to do ourselves. The house looks great after they were all done, and if we hadn't seen the bracketing inside before the new siding went up, we'd have no idea anything was done. We had no problems getting earthquake coverage added onto our policy. The whole process was very smooth, and the end product is exactly as promised.

He is a handyman trying to get into the business of larger remodels. I want people to know so they don't go through a similar experience. I'm a designer who previously worked for a high-end Design/Build firm and made sure to ask the realtor if this guy would be the right fit for the level of quality and expectations that I am used to. She claimed he's worked on a few large projects for her clients lately that have been satisfied, so we proceeded. We met with him on Jan 8, 2021 and told him whatever project scope we committed to needed to be completed by the end of March because I'm pregnant and due in April. We showed Steve a laundry list of things on the first visit - a kitchen remodel, partial updates to 3 bathrooms and 2 fireplace updates. He gave us a project range from $60K to $100K and we confirmed we were willing to spend that much. The second visit, one week later, he brought his cabinet guy and we talked through the kitchen plan & there was a small section of wall that would make for a much better plan if we were able to remove it. He felt like he knew what could be done structurally & when I asked what sort of cost increase we were looking at for that, he said about $3,500. I immediately contacted my engineer, had him out the next week, invited Steve to attend and had stamped engineering drawings in 1 week. From there, everything fell apart. First he asked me if I wanted to get started right away or go through the permitting process. That was red flag #1. I've never worked with you before, my house is on a steep hill, we're about to spend a substantial amount of money and we're about to change the structural integrity - uh, yes, I want your work to be permitted and inspected to make sure you're doing it right. He was out of town when I received the stamped drawings, so I filed the structural permit with the city myself & kept him copied & in the loop. Cabinet pricing was supposed to be available in 1 week. After not hearing from Steve for 2 weeks, I followed-up only to discover that the cabinet guy had put my file aside claiming he was waiting for drawings from me that I had already sent 2 weeks prior. Steve had dropped the ball and not followed up with the cabinet guy. Red flag #2. I wrote a full Scope of Work so Steve would have something to help him price by and made sure to let him know we needed the pricing broken out so we could decide which projects to tackle. Weeks kept passing by, no response. Red flag #3. He hung up on my last call so I wasn't able to leave a voicemail and didn't respond to my text. Red flag #4 and #5. I had my husband call because I knew Steve didn't have his cell number and he answered immediately, giving excuses, but promising pricing the next day. Several more days passed, still no pricing. My husband followed up again... more excuses. He finally responded today, Feb 24, 2021, after 6 weeks of wasting our time, saying that he cannot meet our deadlines & costs. Mind you, he never provided us with costs on the full scope or various projects - just a verbal $60K to $100K range. It slowly and painfully became clear that he doesn't want to take the time to price large scale jobs because that's not his bread and butter. Everyone does business their own way, but he was fully aware of our situation and tight deadlines and could have easily told us he wasn't the right fit so we could move on to someone that was. Since then, I've researched and discovered he doesn't even have an active license. However, the city of Lake Oswego makes the homeowner sign a document stating that all contractors must be licensed that are filing for permits, which I included in the Scope of Work, so this was probably another reason he was being squirmy. If you have a small job and he can be in and out quickly without doing too much effort in the way of written documentation and contracts, maybe you could give it a try. Otherwise, move along, there are much better resources out there.
