This is 100% Racism, and if you disagree then just ask yourself this; if black people had to pay $120 and whites got it for free would it then be racist? I WILL NEVER support this business again! We need businesses in this neighborhood to unite everyone, and this is just tearing it further apart. http://www.nirvanayogaatlanta.com/workshops/

So, I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure how much of a fool I was going to make of myself-- but I really wanted to switch up my workout routine. I went to Gina's Anusara class for beginners. The space is small, and a little weirdly organized. They only accept cash or check, so good thing I had a checkbook. You deposit your money in this bowl, and if you need change, you make it based on the cash in there (honor system). I really liked the vibe of the place. Very relaxing and very soothing. Gina was very nonjudgmental and helped me at my sad attempt at a half hand stand (why do yoga people LOVE these??) but she was SO patient with my sometimes dense behavior. The poses were very suitable for a beginner, and even before the day was out I was feeling sore in my arms (awesome!). I really liked this class, and given that there were like 5 students total, it was great to get some individual attention. I will definitely be back, and I might sign up for a package and save a little money.

I have my favorite teachers and work to attend their classes as much as I can. For me, the membership plan is worth it if you can attend at least 6 classes a month. (Some people come every day! Multiple times a day!) I mostly attend Hatha classes but I also enjoy Flow and Super Stretch. The stretch, yin and restorative classes are the most beginner friendly. I've only attended a few warm/hot classes and they are not my jam. However, they are very popular with others! M3 is LGBTQIA friendly and has a policy against racism posted on their website. I haven't seen any other studio display such a message. As a Black woman, I notice when I'm the only Black person in the room, and I appreciate when someone else who looks like me is present and welcome in the space. (I don't want to be the only one y'all!) They have an app to use for scheduling and a very active IG page. They also have contests to encourage class attendance and give good prizes! I won a gift card to a local store and felt so special. The only thing I don't like is the class schedule changing every season. Some classes don't change but I've had to drop some classes because they are on a new day or at a different time. I can't believe that I'm the first person to review M3. It's a great addition to Atlanta yoga and I hope more people sing their praises.

But after a few classes at Highland Yoga, I have a feeling I may have found my new home. I've visited both the Buckhead and Brookhaven locations. Both are beautiful, but Brookhaven is definitely my favorite since it's so close to my house. It may not seem like a huge difference, but on those days when motivation is a little low, having a studio just minutes away makes it so much easier to stay consistent. I also want to give a special shout-out to Kindall. She has such a beautiful spirit and was incredibly welcoming. When you're trying a new studio, the people you encounter really shape your first impression, and she made me feel comfortable from the very beginning. Another thing I appreciate is the size of the studio. The waiting area is spacious, and the practice room itself never feels overcrowded. After a hot yoga class, we're all a little sweaty and tired, so having enough space makes a huge difference. I've been to studios that felt a bit cramped, and it can become overstimulating pretty quickly. Highland does a great job of creating an environment that feels open, calm, and comfortable. And I have to mention the parking--because convenient parking deserves its own paragraph! There's a free parking garage directly across from the studio that's less than a five-minute walk away. If you're unfamiliar with the area, that's such a nice bonus. On those mornings when you're running a little behind, the last thing you want to worry about is circling for parking before class. Thankfully, that's not something you have to think about here. I'm officially five classes in, and I can already say I think Highland Yoga has earned a new member. I'm looking forward to continuing my practice here.

I can only imagine what yoga teachers have to endure-- harness all this energy that people bring to the room. I know I usually do yoga when I'm stressed out, need relief, want to relax and challenge my body to connect with the earth and become more grounded in the here and now. It's a lot to deal with I'm sure for the teachers, and this is true for any yoga studio. Yoga Hive is extra amazing at empathy and empowerment. They challenge you, and you definitely will get in serious yoga shape, but in a compassionate, non-judgmental way. The yoga instructors are really good here, and I mean, REALLY good. The sessions are filled with beginners to advanced dancers who are beyond gorgeous with their postures, and everyone is celebrated. The instructors are top notch-- they support the super beginner to the professional dancer. It's a very diverse and vibrant community, which I just love so much.

I might have to move to Virginia Highland now with my mat bag and tight pants. ::shudder:: But in all reality, this place rocks. I was a total yoga virgin and they welcomed me with open arms. The fact that your first class is free is just a cherry on top of the whole stretching and planking and namaste-ing experience. I've only been in the upstairs studio, which is clean, bright, and surprisingly cool given the hellish temperatures outside. They have plenty of blankets and bolsters to help you out if you need it, as well. My class was with Doug and he was great: didn't move too fast but wasn't painfully slow, always providing advice for how to make a move easier or more difficult. He was also always sure to give repeat instructions on when to inhale vs exhale: the thing I found most difficult. Plus, he complimented me at the end of the class, and yes, flattery will get you everywhere with me. I'm planning on purchasing a package dealio in the future and looking forward to repeat visits to Yoga Samadhi.
