Great gym! Plenty of machines, classes, a pool, tv channels, equipment, and courteous help /…read moreservice available. -1 star: The only downside is that when it's crowded, it tends to feel claustrophobic, the ceilings & floor aren't that spacious. Your comfort goes down exponentially when it's too crowded. And for a workout environment, which is generally uncomfortable and can make people self conscious, it gets awkward! (And I am a frequent gymmer, 5-7x per week at my home gym or other hotel gyms)

Wow... This is easily one of the worst gyms, if not the…read moreworst, I have ever been to. In no particular order... There's almost no pressure in the showers, so good luck having a shower after your workout. Although the water isn't hot anyway, so you might not want to. The entire gym is cool, so as soon as you build up a sweat, you're going to get clammy and cold, great when you're trying to work-out. They do have plenty of cardio equipment, just a shame it isn't particularly good. For example, the cross trainers have such a small stride, that you might as well be using the stepping machines. It's also packed in so tightly, that it can be difficult to use equipment next to someone else as your arms are likely to bump into each other. The weight machines are in poor condition, and aren't necessarily even on both sides. Really great stuff. For me personally, the free weights area is the biggest let down, as it is kinda big, but really lacking in equipment. You can tell that free weights are an afterthought here, and not something they care about. Despite having plenty of space, they only have one flat bench, despite it being, for better or worse, probably the number one piece of equipment in use. Between this, and what I take to be either steroid users or just a-holes, this has led to almost-fights and threats of violence. Really great atmosphere... Oh, and no one bothers putting their weights back, so you'll be spending half your work-out trying to find what you are going to use. Which brings me to the staff, who didn't seem to care about their 'roid raging customers threatening other customers. Really well done. So definitely only 1 star, and to be honest, they don't even deserve that much.

Initially I was less committed, but as I began to understand my own potential and got better at not comparing myself to others in class (mainly worrying I would never be as flexible or as strong as my fellow classmates!) I started to attend more regularly. Yoga with Hana and Aya is dynamic, challenging and fun. I go along to 2-3 classes a week now and love everything about them; the friendly and welcoming attitude, the wonderful opportunity to practice outside in beautiful Finsbury Park and the excellent teaching. The indoor class at the Redmond Centre on a Monday night is close to home making it brilliantly convenient as an after work exercise option with not far to go after the class has finished! With its clean, large, spacious studio overlooking the West Reservoir at Woodberry Grove, the centre offers a great, enlightening space for practice. Hana clearly and intelligently provides superb direction ensuring you can appreciate the true purpose of each asana. Using the full time of the class (an hour in the park, an hour & 30mins in the centre), she encourages us to be curious and explore postures, not to adopt a one size fits all approach, making for a safer practice and teaching for all attending. The classes are intense, the work goes deep and the benefits stay with you throughout the week. I've met many new friends through Hana's classes, workshops and retreats and regularly recommend her to friends, neighbours and colleagues.

I love the Vinyasa Flow style classes that keep me really fit as they are really challenging, building on my core muscles and strength. I am a keen runner and rock climber and I find that Mindful Movements Vinyasa Flow keeps me in tiptop condition. The classes outdoors are an ideal way to get some fresh air and nature into my weekends and I also love the ambience of the candle evening classes at Islington Arts Factory and the Redmond Community Centre. Definitely the best Yoga you can find local to N4 for really reasonable prices!

A workout within a workout? yes, that's possible at the Virgin Active Gym here in Crouch End!…read moreBecause, in order to get to the changing rooms, you already have to climb up a flight of stairs and then, in oder to get to the actual gym-floor, you have to get up even higher...now that's what I call ingenious... Anyway, this gym features everything that you need: plenty of treadmills and other cardio-equipment; all sorts of weight-machinery (which I still have to figure out how to use properly); a separate work-out area for women; separate studios for cycling and other classes, as well as a swimming pool (which is not huge, but will do). What I don't like here is that you have to pay for your towels. Especially, given that I already pay an all-gym membership at the more-expensive Barbican gym...that's not logical in my opinion! But, for the last few visits, I always put on an innocent face and said "really? I didn't know and now didn't bring any money..."

Have you ever heard of a gym that is located out of the city centre yet has high end equipment,…read moresmashing customer service, spacious in all areas with so much to do as well as it being affordable without all the hassle and fights for the squat rack? Maybe? Well I'm sure there are a few located around somewhere but being a new member of Virgin Active Crouch End is something that I am proud of as it ticks all qualities mentioned above. First things first is to make it clear that Virgin Active Crouch End never used to be as swanky as it is now. Having had a £3million makeover sets it ahead of its other branches. I decided to converse with the receptionist before leaving the gym and I mentioned that this gym reminds me of the Virgin Active: Classic Collection (Mayfair) which used to be my gym a year ago and to my surprise she informed me that the makeover was thought about and designed to look like the Virgin Active Mayfair branch. The key benefit about this gym is that you are paying a MUCH cheaper price but with the same features as it's high end branches and that's what I call a bargain! In regards to the gym and overall customer service I couldn't rate it any lower than 5 stars. Brand spanking new technogym equipment, a very spacious gym floor with loads of equipment which means no waiting around during peak times, the steam room can fit 14 people comfortably as well as the heat ensuring that you're in and out in a swift time. The sauna is very spacious too with great lighting and design and the 20m pool has the same qualities and style as the Virgin Active Mayfair gym with the added customer service being on point. I am yet to try out the classes, but, after witnessing a few commencing on the gym floor I can ensure myself that I will be working up a sweat. ***An out of city gym with the same qualities, features and customer service as a central London gym. New equipment, a quality spa area and a spacious surrounding will leave you wanting to come back as often as you can as well as a café with plenty of seats and computers will have you hanging around for hours. Virgin Active is not just a gym, it's a health club and the next step to achieving a better mind, body and soul and I am proud to be a member of one of the most favoured gyms around the UK***

If they bother to get back to you about any concern you might have about the facilities they will be completely inflexible and unhelpful. They know if you leave they have plenty of other users with little to no other choices. The recent refurbishment has been badly managed with a much smaller choice of equipment spread over 4 floors in 6 different spaces! Even at off-peak times there are queues for equipment because much of it does not even work. Complaints fall on deaf ears and management will not even entertain reducing fees due to the reduction in services. Their only suggestion they can offer is to cancel! They really do not care about the community or their members despite the headlines on their website.

You don't worry about verrucas and kids weeing in the pool here, unlike at North London's other, older and therefore grimier public pools. I like to come early on a Saturday morning (provided I haven't been out too heavily the night before) as it's usually pretty quiet and you can get a good pace in the fast lane without hitting too many people's heels. The changing rooms are also big and clean although my favourite thing about the pool is that it's near enough to my house that I can stroll home for a post-swim shower.

I tried a free guest pass at this gym after my former gym, FitSpace near Holloway Road station,…read moreoutrageously increased the price of annual membership by 50% for 2015. When I called FitSpace to complain, they said that it was to "keep up with other gyms in the area." Fit4less opened in the past year and is only a few blocks away so it seemed to be the natural competitor. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my gym experience and I do not think it is worth it to join. For starters, the venue is much smaller than that of FitSpace. There is one row of treadmills (about 6 of them) whereas FitSpace has two. It also only has 3 rowing machines, whereas FitSpace has about 6, and on top of that 2 of them were broken and didn't provide any real resistance. There are only 3 showers in the womens changing room, whereas FitSpace also has 6. And there are definitely not enough mats for core exercises - there are only 4 and they are all in one cramped space. I would say that FitSpace has close to 10 mats. It's also unfortunate that on the treadmills and the bikes, you are looking at the wall instead of out the window like at FitSpace. It was January but almost every machine was full and I had to queue to get a chance on the rowing machines and several of the weight machines. Another thing to note is that you have to bring your own lock to use the lockers, whereas at FitSpace it operates just on a pound coin that you get back. The showers were gross and didn't drain all the soap out, so I would definitely only enter with flip flops. To make matters worse, the water was lukewarm and the water pressure was terrible. I think the one thing this gym has going for it is that the classes appear to be free and they are held in a separate room, whereas at FitSpace they cost 5 pounds, there is not much of a selection, and it is just held in the general exercise area. But for someone just looking to work out on their own, this is a terrible gym. The two now charge the same price for monthly, as I guess FitSpace looked at this inferior gym and wondered why they couldn't charge more for their better amenities. Finally, to try and end on a positive note: instead of a gym pass, Fit4less uses a fingerprint reader - that is pretty cool.

on a friends recommendation i downloaded a free guest pass from their website (you can still do…read morethis i think) and now I've been going for the last two months and think for the price (20 pounds a month people!) and the fact you dont have to sign up for an annoying 1 year contract - it's pretty amazing. it also opens at 6:30am which i love as i can cram in a proper workout before work, and is close to holloway road tube. plus classes - which i probably use a bit more than the gym are great. they have zumba, yoga and pretty punishing circuit classes. yes it's not the the most fancy place and the changing rooms are pretty basic but I'd prefer that to paying a fortune for my work out.
