I called up in the morning and after some manipulation I managed to convince Simon to let me have a free trial. I felt that the club was very much like the one in Tower Hill. The staff seems to be customer service focussed. Simon seemed to have a passion for the industry and was knowledgeable enough.
Considering that this place is on the Strand, it's really big. Their cardiovascular section has about 50 pieces, all machines are Technogym, and the free weights area is a good size. In addition they have a spinning studio, an 18-meter pool, additional studios for classes, a steam room, sauna and a good size Jacuzzi.
Good Points: All of the Virgin gyms that I have been into are kept in good condition, and this is no exception. The staff seems professional and well trained. The gym didn't seem to get too crowded at anytime - even though I trained at about 2pm. They have natural light. They have enough mirrors in the free weight section, which is a decent size.
Bad points: In general, this gym is really good. The only thing that I didn't like was the winding staircase - especially at the bottom when you go into the men's changing rooms - you feel like you're going to hit your head.
A final word: I am begging to think that Virgin is a good operator - they have a model for others to aspire to. Again, ambience was ok, but not buzzin'. Simon offered to start me up on £80 per month with a £15 joining fee for 12 months. That's more than I was asked to pay at Tower Hill. Virgin also do a weekend rate of £27 per month, which restricts you to using the club from Friday night to Saturday night. That would be good value to someone living locally who only trains once or twice per week. I did like this place and have given it four stars - you can take it as 4.5. read more
