As others have noted they make it exceedingly difficult to cancel a membership. I would advise all to avoid the monthly subscription and just buy class packages bc the process of breaking up with these people is about as bad as it gets. The classes themselves are just alright. Very instructor dependent and there's really only one decent instructor. Limited class schedule that seems to only accommodate the schedule of a stay at home mother. There are FAR better workouts in FAR better locations (the studio is in a very Mad Max area of the city) with FAR better service and friendlier staff. Will never do Pure Barre again bc of how awful my time at this studio was. I'd give it negative stars if I could. read more

Love this location and the instructor's. I've only taken 3 classes one with Amanda and 2 with Calla. Barre is something I've only done a handful of times so I really enjoy how small the classes are and how the instructors help ya and motivate you , even the other people who attend are super sweet. I've had a really bad experience managing my membership here. I like the classes and the instructors, but the administrators won't allow me to cancel the monthly subscription plan I'm on and they keep auto-charging me. When I tried to cancel, they said I had to have a phone call with someone who convinced me to keep doing the auto-payment with a little discount. I tried to cancel again and you can't cancel yourself from the account portal, they tell you you have to call them. I called and left a message, emailed and texted multiple times. They emailed back that I need to fill out a form, but didn't send the form. After many days of back and forth, they are saying they will still charge me next month because they require 30 days notice. I wanted to keep coming to classes on a punch card, but now I have such a bad feeling I won't be going back again :( read more

Pure barre has made me feel comfortable and supported as I get back into working out. The Pure Barre on Broadway is unmatched and the staff do everything to make you feel safe and empowered. I leave class feeling happy, sweaty, and amazed that I was able to do certain movements. Calla is the most amazing instructor! She is very informative and gives you the 1 on 1 time needed to make sure you are doing the positions correctly. She has such a fun energy and is a great coach. I LOVE going to her classes. Collette is also an awesome instructor and very supportive! Additionally, Keaton at the front desk is so sweet! She always checks in on me and makes sure I have a great experience. So I'm a total yoga girl (I've been a teacher for the past 3 years) but my best friend said I had to try Barre.... so I signed up for their first week free classes and gave it a go. Boy did it kick my butt! The classes are extremely challenging! I have no formal dance or ballet training but the instructors were very kind to help me and show me proper alignment. You keep your socks on the whole time and use small movements to tone specific areas of the body. Most exercises you are either using weights, a ball, a band or the barre. I recommend signing up ahead of time for classes as they do tend to fill up! No showers. No lockers, just shelves to place your belongings on so leave valuables in the car. It's funny - I've been coming here on and off for awhile now - but it's taken me this long to write a review. When it comes to workout places, I really want to take time to see how great a workout a place it before reviewing it. That being said.... Pure Barre is an EXCELLENT workout, and this location executes it just about perfectly. It is a low impact, deceptively difficult and intense workout. I've done all the barre classes in the greater PDX area and this format is my favorite. It's challenging, and includes stretching after every series. As someone who won't stretch out if my life depended on it, this is great. It's also a great workout no matter what your fitness. I have transitioned from super fit, to not so fit and back towards kinda fit and PB delivers for any level. I also took many classes while pregnant, doctor approved, was thrilled I could still keep up (until doctor said no more, boo). With any workout, the class is truly what you make of it - if you don't put yourself into the class, you won't see results. I've taken classes from a variety of instructors and enjoy them all. My sole feedback on that is with new people, proactively help them out! It takes a few classes to get into the groove and some of the newer people seem a bit bewildered and need guidance without raising a hand for it. The studio itself is clean, simple and the staff is friendly. My one blip (about redeeming a voucher of sorts) was briefly frustrating but quickly rectified and applied correct. The owner, Stephanie, even reached out and apologized for the confusion. Totally not necessary but the little touches matter. I usually do not take fitness classes in general because it's difficult to keep up and know that you are doing it correctly; however, Pure Barre has the most amazing teachers! Not only are the classes a smaller size, but the instructor also helps each individual with their form and even remembers everyone's name for encouragement. Talk about feeling loved! I see every body type in there too, so it's pretty awesome to see how the studio caters to just about everyone. The work outs are great because it focuses on smaller movements and has the right amount of intensity. I love it! Wow, I think I finally found my kind of workout! After a few months now of putting on pounds, I decided to finally be proactive and do something about it instead of complaining about it. A Pure Barre class only cost me 6 credits of my Classpass membership, which I believe equates to about $10. This is a great deal, as most fitness classes run $20+ a pop. Walking in, the front desk girl (Ella) was super sweet. She told me about how Pure Barre offers a free week of classes to new clients. There are two Pure Barre locations in Portland (Pearl District and Lloyd), both of which are convenient for me. The studio itself is cute and neatly decorated. In terms of the actual workout, Pure Barre is so on point. I'm not the type of gal who likes cardio, and I'm not looking to get bulky as I get stronger. Pure Barre is perfect since its low impact and aims to tone muscles through small, isometric movements. My instructor, Christy, was super upbeat and made class go by quickly. Although I wasn't really sweating much after class was done, I could definitely feel my workout the next day. Parking is pretty easy in this area of town which is also a huge plus. Great Instructors - great classes! I'm really feeling the soreness and tightening in the places I need;)

I literally think of writing a review every time I step out of class--but then I get overwhelmed by how many things I have to say that I just don't? Anyway, here's my attempt at giving a concise overview of all these classes have done for me. When I signed up for class the first day, I was terrified. First off, I had never been to a studio-type class before. Second, I was in a year-long process of recovering from a nasty case of sciatica where I had shooting pain from my low back all the way down the back of my leg to my heal. And when I say nasty, I mean wicked god-awful nasty. At a certain point, age 24, I was using the scooters that they had in Fred Meyer to shop for groceries because I would be in so much pain that I'd literally collapse to the floor if I walked for more than 10 minutes at a time. After about a year of at-home yoga videos from YouTube, I decided to go to my first class. And, look. I had made some pretty okay recovery by then. But I was still in constant pain. I don't know how to say this without being dramatic or cheesy, but that first class changed my life. I came in not even able to hold a plank. Period. Like, not even for two seconds. And now (on good days, of course!) I can hold one for a full 90 seconds. With pretty decent form, too! But I always find myself showing off to my friends: Look what I did in Pure Barre today! It's insane! For that kind of progress--I've gotta say--I would not be able to do it on my own. It took a team of helpful instructors who I know genuinely care about me to get there. Sometimes even going out of their way to give one-on-one instruction. And can I just say, they're all super body positive, too?! I was genuinely worried because, when I started, I definitely was purchasing my clothes from the plus-size section. Never have I ever felt like they were looking at me differently because of my size NOR have I felt like they've ever made weight loss seem like something I SHOULD be doing. I have though. Over 40 pounds. But that was never ever their focus. Their priorities have always been getting stronger--on taking that 45min to 1hr to work on yourself And I love how they leave those intentions, what working on yourself means, to the individual. Oh. Also. You might be thinking, "Wow. That girl with sciatica was okay in this workout. Sounds like it might be boring." Which haha. No. Pure Barre has never gotten easier. I've found that the more my body is capable of, the more I can push it. Now, nearly 300 classes later, I still get sore after class. And, I know that I'm not the only person who thinks this, but I genuinely think it gets harder the more I do it. I'm always finding new muscles to work. New ways to dig deeper. New ways to push harder. Nah. I really believe that this is a workout for a large variety of body types. If you're even thinking of going, at least try it. It may be a bit pricey, but it's the best money I have EVER spent. Plus, idk if I'm supposed to say this..but they'll let you have a free week to try it out. In which case, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!! I immediately took a liking to this location of Pure Barre. For starters, speaking with the receptionist prior to my visit was pleasant. She was patient and explained how to register with my Groupon and clothes I needed to wear to best get my workout (ie. socks, legging, etc). Most importantly, this location is actually DIVERSE! woohoo!! I am not only talking about racial diversity, but body sizes as well. Taking a new class is already so intimidating, especially since I am not a dancer, but seeing the different hues of brown, as well as, large and small body sizes made me a lot less intimidated and welcomed. Not only that, but seeing women larger than me killing it, gave me a lot of positive reinforcement. This is usually never the case at other barre studios or boutique gyms I've frequent in the past (especially in Portland). In addition to all that, the instructor kicked my butt but really took the time to help me with my form. Like most boutique gyms, this place is pretty expensive. Stephanie, the owner, is one of the highest caliber humans I have ever met. This studio has so many beautiful and handmade, unique touches that you will not find at any other fitness studio. I know that to many people, that is not something they look for when searching for a "gym". But, think about it...if someone puts that type of effort into the finishing touches on their gym, imagine what they'll do with the workout. Pure Barre's workout is all I will ever need. It has replaced my need for cardio, weightlifting, yoga, and pilates. I get enough variety in the 1 hour class here that I cannot imagine spending my time somewhere else. Great studio, very nice and welcoming staff. Studio is clean and well-organized. I have only had one class here so far but it was fun, paced well and covered a whole body workout. Lots of leg and seat work, which i needed. There weren't that many people there (Monday day) so it was a nice change from some overcrowded spots. Big plus is free and easy local street parking and nearby coffee shops/restaurants to explore before and after. Wish they had a shower, but otherwise a great experience and I will be back for more. read more

When I first went to Pure Barre Lloyd in Portland, Oregon, I had no preconceptions. It's not dance, but the barre is a big help in making the small movements that build muscle. I had a great time. The teachers were well trained and welcoming. The space is bright and nicely Oregon themed. The owners have taken the time to make the space and the team of teachers feel positive and warm. I attended twice a week, which was about right for muscle recovery. And I lost weight and felt much stronger. By the third visit, the other class members knew my name and I knew many of theirs. The teachers make that possible. Teachers and class members care about and encourage each other toward goals and good health. Nice wood sign that takes the forest theme right out on the sidewalk. I've been doing Pure Barre since 2012. I'm a member of the 100 club and I've taken over 150 classes. I love Pure Barre. This is why: Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective way to change your body. Period. If you have any doubts that it works, don't because It DOES work, and the method is great for every fitness level from beginner to advanced. Before Pure Barre, I hated organized fitness/exercise classes. I grew frustrated trying to keep pace with the marathoner, yogi or body builder next to me in other classes. What's great about this method is that there is no comparing or keeping up with your neighbor... its just your body against your brain. This is where you learn that you can do anything for 10 seconds. The instructors at Pure Barre Lloyd are genuinely interested in helping you achieve firmer thighs, jiggle-free arms, and a rockin' ledge (Pure Barre speak for a nice butt). And they're not kidding, you will actually see results in 10 classes if you give it some effort. There are 3 studios in the Portland/Vancouver area, and this one is by far the best. The owner, Stephanie is fabulous and actually remembers the names of her clients. The instructors are welcoming, genuinely nice and seriously effective. In my years after being crowned Elite (2008, 2009 - #powertrip), I have gained additional insight in writing reviews, so I will make this short and sweet: I AM ADDICTED. This is my new favorite place in Portland, and it is the reason I am taking a hiatus from my two year Yelp 'break' to talk about it with 90 internet friends and the world. I would literally be best friends with every single instructor...I hope that doesn't come across as creepy as it sounds. Everyone is incredibly friendly, helpful, and just NICE. I have been to a handful of other barre studios, and I can't explain it...I just didn't get the same vibe from any of them. It is truly a magical little place, and I am home. Logistically, the studio is bright and beautiful. The equipment is clean. The prices are competitive. The music is awwwwwwwesome - how great is it to hear new songs? Took advantage of a Summer Sizzle special to take unlimited classes over two moths at this studio! The studio is clean and tidy (and they have small amenities like hair ties, spray deo, tampons -- though I wish they could vacuum the carpet in between every class -- and I wish they had less cliche 'art' on the walls). It's conveniently located (5 blocks from home for me and right off NE Broadway!). It's easy to sign up for classes and three class 'types' in a schedule. The entire staff including the instructors are friendly, helpful, and personable (the instructors gave feedback and light hands on to help when I was doing something wrong). I think the Pure Barre workout is okay - it's unique if you've never done it before. It's not cardio and it's not really weight lifting... more like body weight exercises. I decided not to convert to a regular membership after that and while they did ask me about it and call a few times, they weren't too pushy. I am IN LOVE -- with this Pure Barre location. Let me break it down as to why... The workout // Oh dear lord, the burn!! Before ever trying barre, I was worried that I would not fit in at all because I'm a little rough around the edges (basically, I'm the opposite of graceful).I'm an avid runner and cross trainer but my workouts needed something that was low impact so I can still walk when I'm an old granny -- my knees are generally my problem area. I absolutely loved how they work your muscles in an intensive way and really strengthening the core. I fumbled around a lot my first few times but the instructors are extremely helpful and encouraging and their really is no judgment on how good or bad you are at all. The instructors // They are so positive and enthusiastic and make every class feel fun despite the pain you endure (the good kind!). Erika and Stephanie are awesome instructors and I have no doubt the other instructors are too. Stephanie is the owner and really knows how to turn it up! Location // Parking is normally not too hard to find and has free street parking for 2 hours (and I've stayed longer without getting tickets). There is a Peet's across the street for the perfect post workout coffee (or a McMenamins upstairs for post workout Cajun tots and ranch -- ssssshhhhh, don't tell the instructors!) Ambience // I've been to other locations in WA but this one has that cool, custom PDX vibe -- they even have a cute nook in the back as a changing room. Note -- they even have a little bin of quality hair ties and bobby pins in the bathroom! Seriously! Stock up ladies! (Just kidding, I think). I think it just shows that the owners just really care. Who likes to have their ass kicked??!? This girl right here! And that's exactly what they've been doing to me at Pure Barre Lloyd. And I love every thigh shaking, sweat inducing minute of it. The studio is clean and welcoming. They have a retail area in the front with all the necessities, and plenty of extra stuff as well. Cubbies are available for your jacket and street shoes, and their changing area is nice and big. The studio has beautiful natural light and adorned with real plants, which give the studio a splash of color. Each of the instructors I've taken class with have been enthusiastic without syrupy, and yet tough with out being a Drill Sargent. Classes are well designed and I don't ever feel like I've taken the same class twice. I've been to other barre studios where the instructors seem to repeat the same class over and over. I like the change up and the challenge that mixing things up gives me. That said, I also appreciate the structure Pure Barre offers. I KNOW I'm going to get a warm up, get sets in for my shoulders, arms, legs, seat and core AND get those muscles stretched out as well. Stephanie has a great staff and has fostered a studio that feels a bit like family. The other ladies (and gent!) have greeted me with a smile and have encouraging words after class. I have been coming to Pure Barre for about two months. I started because I had to stop running per doctor's orders, and needed to do low impact exercise. I'll admit, I was lost the first few classes I took, but I kept coming back. I loved the way Pure Barre made me feel. The people who work here are just wonderful! I'm hooked! They said it would be addicting and they were so right! I'm not much of a fitness person and have cycled my way through many activities to try to find the one for me. Well I think I've found it! The class is challenging but you don't feel defeated. The music is upbeat and I love the pace of the class. In Portland for the week and went to Pure Barre Lloyd to stay active since it's close to where I am staying. I have tried PB in Burlingame, CA before but still very new to barre. Went to 2 classes at Lloyd so far. The staff is friendly and the instructors remember people's names. Nicole and Heidi are excellent instructors. They correct form individually throughout class and are very encouraging. They answer your questions at the end of class as well. The studio is very clean has great light and sound system. The instructors play dancy music which puts one in the mood to work hard. The workout itself is challenging. It works the whole body. Everyone works at her own pace. Every class is structured the same way but the instructors keep it interesting by switching the workout. You can make it as hard as you want it to be, allowing people of different fitness levels to be in the same room. read more

Over the last few years my body has changed dramatically. Chronic illness, chemotherapy and an aggressive ongoing regimen of medications have left me feeling disconnected from body in a way I have never experienced before. I went to pure barre Portland yesterday. I took a classic class with Sara I've been doing barre for a few years back in Texas but I didn't know what to expect at another studio. I was very pleased with class. Sara was wonderful and offered accommodations when needed The studio itself was large with bars and mirrors on all four sides. My own studio doesn't have that. I took Calla's Empower and Reform classes during a weekend trip to Portland and was impressed with the warm welcome. The regular members filled the majority of both classes, and Calla took the time to introduce me to the studio.
