I love taking classes at Pure Barre. I have been to all three of the upper East side locations. I like the Lexington Avenue location because despite the studio being the smallest, it feels cozy and intimate. I actually like how the classes are smaller because I feel like I get more attention from the instructors. But overall, I highly recommend taking these fitness classes. Love Pure Barre and this studio is on the top of my list. Being in the basement, it stays nice and cool, sometimes a bit too cool. But after you start moving it feels great! I primarily take classes with Jen M and she's so friendly. I appreciate the adjustments since you're there to do the work and get the best possible workout. They recently adjusted the lightbulbs which made the ambiance even more relaxing. They have 2 changing areas along with 2 restrooms which makes quit changes easy. read more

This Pure Barre location holds a special place in my heart. Alex, one of the instructors, is the best. She is warm, kind, funny, and makes the time fly by from warmup to stretching. I love coming here to get my weekly fix of "lifting and tucking" whether working up a sweat in a Classic, Empower, or Define class. Their offer of "first class free" is anything but free. When you're forced to pay $22 for a rubbery pair of socks that you'll never wear again, the class is not free. And while I know they're just doing their jobs, the girls working there are really pushy trying to get newbies to sign up for their over-priced classes. No showers. There are way better options in this neighborhood. read more

I've been to many Pure Barre studio's in the city and this one is by far the most spacious with the most individualized attention. The instructors are peppy, friendly, and give appropriate form correction which is important to engage the right muscles for each exercise. I always leave class feeling strong and toned. I was truly excited to try out Pure Barre since it is walking distance from my apartment. I've taken barre classes at other studios so it definitely wasn't my first rodeo. Overall I found the classes to be mediocre at best- they weren't AMAZING and they definitely weren't worth the boutiquey price, in my opinion. A few things that I initially liked were the convenient location and the various pricing options. I liked how they had individual and monthly unlimited options. Originally I was considering some of the options. The instructors I had were also nice and friendly and they also corrected my form if necessary. And then there were the disappointments... One of the things I wasn't impressed by was the layout of the studio. Understandably one is limited to NYC real estate, however I felt that the layout of the class was somewhat sloppy. Because the studio is in a narrow, basement there is very limited space. As one of the other reviews said they should have assigned spots. When you had to move to mat activities you had to take a few seconds to make sure you weren't on top of your neighbor. Also the studio was only partially mirrored- so if you weren't able to get a spot at a mirror you missed out. In regard to the difficulty of the class, I felt like it was less than challenging. There weren't a lot of exercises done on the barre, somewhat defeating the purpose. And the ones that were done were not that difficult. I could've done them at my own gym. Then I thought maybe I'd feel something the next day and I didn't. And lastly booking classes was a problem for me. Since I don't have an unlimited membership I miss out on the "early booking option". Therefore limiting the classes I can sign up for. Depending on when you are looking to take a class, the early morning book up quite quickly. Because of that I was unable to use my last class credit since it expired two weeks from the date of purchase. Management basically gave me the runaround OR the option to pay $10 to extend my credit for another week. That wasn't so enticing to me. Perhaps it might be good for a beginner but if you've taken classes at Pure Yoga or Exhale you might be underwhelmed :( read more

I have been to a couple pure barre locations and preferred the other locations. Pure barre definitely focuses on being more technical and more floor exercises. They do not have showers. The check-in is on the ground level and the studio is below ground downstairs. There is limited space down there and I felt very close to my fellow class takers. The mirror only covered half of the room. The instructors at the other locations was very friendly and checked in with everyone. I got the feelign that this instructor was frustrated by the lack of experience with barre in the room. In January, this is something that should be expected as we all make goals to better take care of our health. read more

I recently returned to the NY (and my old hood) after a few years in SF. This space used to be a pizza place - one of my favorites for greasy, late night deliciousness always served up with a smile. I was initially really bummed to find that my pizza place was gone and in it's place was Pure Barre. I'm also usually wary of huge corporate chains of any sort, and I knew PB has locations all over the country, so I was doubly bummed. That said, I loved my barre classes in SF, and PB is on classpass, so I decided to give it a try. Wow am I glad I did! Not only was this an absolutely fantastic workout (about 10x harder than the class I've been doing to in SF), the instructor was amazing, the music was great and the class kinda flew by despite the fact that every muscle in my body was screaming. My sister and I were excited about trying a pure Barre class here. We had heard mixed reviews from friends but wanted to check it out ourselves. We were offered an introductory rate by the woman with the southern accent and were told that the first class could be taken off the total amount if we chose to sign up for a package. Sounds great, right? So we both took the Saturday morning class, the class was full to capacity. I stood at the back barre and my sister was crammed into the corner. As we started our leg lift exercises our legs kept hitting each other. There was absolutely no room to exercise. I can tell other people were annoyed by each other having to squeeze into the small spaces they were also given. The instructor, a pretty blonde woman, was nice and polite, but hardly an instructor! She had poor posture and her directions for some of the exercises were terrible. She did not take the time or effort to personally correct anyone, was overall just lazy. Once we left the crowded class we both realized we did not feel sore or sweaty, and did not feel like we put an hours worth of exercise in. Do not waste your time ladies, go to Exhale Barr on Madison. They have actual showers and a locker room and the instructors are real professionals. You will feel sore and start noticing results after 2 classes. I gave this review one star for the blue duct tape that holds up the 'pure barre' sign in the window. read more

After going to the Upper West Location I really thought I wouldn't return to Pure Barre, but this location was Awsome !! For some reason every time it's your first time at a different location you need to fill out their form, I was running a bit late so I was a bit scared the class would start without me but the person next to me was the instructor, what a sigh of relief :) The instructor was Abby and she's the union square location manager, her energy was through the roof ! If barre was easy we wouldn't be there and she reassured of us that, often as silly as this sounds I forget to find that connection with my breathe and just get centered she helped immensely with that, now I'll have to make the trip to union square for her lol read more

The staff and teachers that work at this location are the best ! I have been to 2 other studios and nothing compares to the teaching on the UES. The teacher Corey was very attentive, helpful and encouraging. She explains very complicated work outs very easily. She really made me work as hard as I could with still a smile on my face. I love UES Pure Barre! After moving to NY from South Carolina and my home studio there, I was itching to get back into the studio. Even though I had taken classes before, it was a different franchise and MindBody account so I was able to sign up as a new member and do the 2-month unlimited pass. I will def be reupping (probably the 12-month contract). Every teacher here is so friendly and encouraging- I have never felt judged or unwelcome. Can't recommend Pure Barre enough to anyone who wants to feel their workout, see how the moves affect your body, want a confidence boost or need a new way to escape and relieve stress. I just finished my 30-day new client special (unlimited classes, $150) and love the way I feel during and after Pure Barre classes. I have a hard time finding exercise I enjoy and the encouraging atmosphere, constantly changing moves, and opportunity to wear cute yoga clothes seemed to be the perfect combination to get me motivated. I found myself incorporating this into my routine and grabbing a class about 3 times a week, sometimes 4. The hardest things for me were some of the floor ab exercises since I wasn't able to do a sit up from a completely flat position to legs and shoulders in the air using only my abs (still can't!). However even when there are a few things you need to modify or do your best with, the exercises change so frequently you don't get a chance to dwell on it and feel bad. I love the resistance band exercises at the barre. It took me a while to figure out that small kind-of twitching movements are what they're looking for with all the squeezing commands. Whenever you're supposed to move your legs or arms it's supposed to originate from your butt or upper abs (respectively). Every class is all levels and about once a month they offer a Breaking Down the Barre class that goes into detail about form and modifications. I was glad I went to this since now I focus more on my form and skip some of the variations that are offered in class (especially during the push ups, etc-- I just do the push ups with the best form I can do, no alternating arms or moving my legs out and in if that's too much for me). So disclosure being out of the way that I have to modify several exercises, I was bummed I didn't lose weight doing Pure Barre so much. I am really grateful that this got me moving and I feel a lot stronger. But I think I lost less than a pound after my month. I have a friend and another coworker who said the same thing happened to them with the barre classes. No weight loss but still enjoyed a lot. i'm considering buying an unlimited membership since the location and the workout really work for me. read more

I have been hooked on Pure Barre for so long now and the fact that a studio has opened in my neighborhood makes me feel so spoiled :) I always leave feeling so accomplished. The size of the room and amount of ppl that can sign up is great were theres enough space and you wont feel like your on top of anyone next to you. My only issue is that the classes book up fast for my schedule. They offer a lot of classes throughout the day but bc there is 1 room only, getting an after work hour class is challenging read more

This was not my first experience with barre class but it was my first time at Pure Barre. I was encouraged to buy a package prior to taking any class. After reading the reviews I decided it was a good idea. Turns out the class was not enjoyable, I felt very uncomfortable and the instructors were not welcoming. Spots should be assigned as there was a rush to get inside and secure a place. After class I explained my feelings to the front desk to see about having a refund and I was told they could not do that. I decided to give this location another try and again had the same experience. I later found out that my classes expired after being told they were good for 3 months. This location is sneaky and not understanding. I will not be returning and suggest you don't either. read more

I started with Pure Barre Upper East Side through the introduction of a friend. I have attended 1/2 dozen classes since, including 5 classes during the Thanksgiving weekend. Really uplifting and inspiring. The classes are very challenging for me, as they require a lot of strength and flexibility. I am sore, trembling and sweating throughout the 50 minutes, but always feeling energized after the class. I liked every instructor I have followed, about 1/2 dozen of them. They are friendly, helpful, gentle, encouraging, and pushes you to do your best. read more

I have only taken barre before at the bar method, and this studio is much less comfortable and has no showers. In general I thought the workout was hard to follow- the instructor was very nice and high energy but she only demonstrated something one time and it was hard to know if you were doing things right. Unlike the bar method, the instructor doesn't correct form or tell you to fix things. The workout was ok- I thought the resistance band stuff was good and very challenging. Overall the lack of locker room/showers and no help with form means I probably won't be back. read more

Okay - I'm officially hooked. I'm someone who has had a few injuries that rule out more high impact activities plus I just generally hate working out at the gym. I've loved every pure barre class so far. Each instructor has been slightly different but everyone has been so friendly, supportive, and motivating. I've taken classes with Allie, Christine, and Jacqueline and they've all been great. Very friendly, they learn you name and motivate you throughout class. It looks easy but it's definitely one of the best workouts I've ever had. My only complaint is that classes are a bit pricey, even when you buy in packages. read more

Pure Barre is such a great workout. I've just gotten started with their 3 classes for 63$ deal and I'm definitely going to be buying packs of 20 classes. So far my favorite teacher is Alice on the UES location. It's difficult at first because you don't know the positions or exercises so I would highly recommend coming earlier or staying later during your first class and asking all your questions. I have now been to 3 classes at this location. Each time the work outs have been slightly different but rooted in the same core principles which I love. The energy is great and the class is over before I know it. My entire body was sore after the first class but I have noticed improvements each time. I love class here! Great teachers and always a really fun full body workout. You will sweat and shake, but it is worth it. Teachers are great at mixing up routines so class is never stale or boring. The studio is kept warm so your muscles don't cramp up, and to keep you sweating. This is my favorite workout! read more
