My favorite place to workout!!! Some boutique studios get a bad reputation because it's "only skinny girls" but this location has both instructors and clients of every size and fitness level. The workouts are fine. But this chain has some of the worst policies for members I've ever encountered. For example, if you pay for unlimited classes, sign up in advance (like the studio asks you to do) and then have a life event happen less than two hours before your scheduled class (say you get a flat tire, you have to work late on a project, someone gets sick - normal things that happen to people who don't have lives that revolve around Pure Barre), the studio feels ENTITLED TO MORE of your money. That's right. They'll take an extra $15 from your bank account or your credit card. Clearly they only care about making money. Look elsewhere for a fair-minded workout. There are plenty of other options here in the city. Give your money to people who don't look for every opportunity to cheat you out of it. read more

Update on 5/31/13: I've taken a total of 4 classes and had a different instructor and different sets of exercises each class. Definitely more variety than Bar Method when it comes to exercises. Ashley, Claudia, Julie, and Rebekah have all been fantastic. For first timers, I highly recommend starting with either Rebekah or Ashley--I feel they provided the most guidance and form correction. My abs hurt when I laugh, that's how intense it is! Original Review written 5/21/13: I tried Pure Barre for the first time today and I really liked it! Today, torture came from the instruction of an adorable and enthusiastic instructor named Rebekah. For those who haven't tried Barre classes, I highly recommend them! They're low impact (I have really bad knees) and EXTREMELY effective if you want to tone. I did about a month of Bar Method in NYC and another few weeks in CA and my legs look amazing. I'm a member of the batwing arm club-- no matter how thin I was or how many exercises I did for my arms I couldn't get them more toned, that is, until Bar Method. I was never able to touch my toes until barre classes, it helps with your flexibility immensely. When I found out I'd be out in TN for a while, I decided to sign up for Bar Method again but since they didn't have Bar Method I decided to try Pure Barre. Location and Parking: There is an open lot a little past the studio with plenty of parking. I love that it's right across from Whole Foods. I can pick up dinner at the hot foods bar before heading back to my hotel. Studio: One bathroom and one closet for changing and cubbies to store your items. Pure Barre, may I recommend getting a water fountain? I'm used to the Bar Method in SoHo and Tustin where they offer a shower, water fountain, lockers, towels, and hair ties so I'm a little spoiled. This studio does sell cute Lululemon gear. There's one mirrored classroom with very cushy/padded carpeting. Overall, very clean and spacious. Scheduling: Pure Barre and Bar Method use the same web interface for scheduling and buying classes (Amex is NOT accepted). I like that it's very easy to use. You can sign up to classes as far as 3 weeks out. Pricing: I believe it's very reasonable. I bought the New Member Special for $100 (unlimited classes for one month) and plan on continuing with the Student Special for $100 since I'm still a graduate student. A regular unlimited month membership is $175/month. Instructor: I've only had Rebekah so far but she was great. I'll update with other instructors. One other person and I were new and she helped correct our forms which I really appreciate. She's also very encouraging. She took the time to answer my questions about one of the exercises after class so that was great too! Class: For those who haven't done a barre workout, it's a mix of exercises at the bar (seat work, thigh work), ab work on the mat, stretching, warm-up exercises, arm exercises using light weights, etc all in one hour. Some things used during the workout are weights, stretching bands, a mat, and a ball. Pure Barre seems to be much faster paced than Bar Method. One con of this is that it does not give much time for the instructor to correct posture since we're moving into the next exercise so quickly. One pro of this is that I feel it makes for a better workout cardio-wise. Audio system and music selection was great. I took the 5:30 class and it was only about 10 folks so I liked how small and intimate it was. Not to mention there was a lot of room to space out. Overall: I already signed up classes for the next few days. You feel sore but in a good way. It gets addicting. I highly recommend Pure Barre. Your body will hate you but thank you. I do want to say for the new folks do NOT feel discouraged if you can't follow the exercises your first class! Form is important and since we do move into next exercises so quickly it may be hard to follow. It gets better! read more

Pure Barre is great! The owner and instructors are incredibly nice and know what they are talking about. The variety in the class is great. Each class is set up the same way where you work the muscle groups in the same order from class to class but the moves you do will vary from class to class. Barre is a great work out if you are looking to tone up. The classes are moderately priced compared to gyms in the area, but unless you can do a month unlimited the classes can definitely add up. If you want to try Barre for the first time things to remember: Wear socks! Don't wear shorts (not allowed). Bring a water! If you are looking for a good toning workout, give it a try! read more

I started taking Pure Barre classes in August '13, and have been coming almost daily since then. I have never been a "fitness junkie", but Pure Barre has definitely changed that. Within my first month, I started seeing results...and not small ones. By the end of September, I had lost 15 pounds and dropped 2 pant sizes. By November, I was down a total of 20 pounds and 4 pant sizes. Not only have I seen results, but it has changed my outlook on fitness facilities and instructors. The facility is neat and clean, and has an incredible selection of stylish, high end apparel. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They are genuinely interested in you, not just your attendance in their class. They make it a point to learn your name and celebrate your progress. The price may be a bit more than most gym memberships, but in my mind it evens out to what I would pay for membership plus personal training sessions...and I'm actually using it, so that's an even bigger plus! read more

Pure Barre has changed my life. I've been a PB member for a few years and the longer I take classes, the more I love it. I never enjoyed working out until I found Pure Barre and now I plan my schedule around my workouts. It has changed my body and I'm stronger than I've ever been. I have lower back issues and a heart condition and Pure Barre is the only workout that I can do. It actually helps my back and is low impact enough for my heart. This studio is wonderful! The owner and all of the instructors truly know what they're talking about and seem to really care about every single client's experience. I have been taking classes here for 3 years and don't have a single complaint. The classes are scheduled at convenient times and the studio is in a great location with free parking. I took Pure Barre classes for about 6 weeks before my lower back was injured in a class in March. I enjoyed the classes, thought the instructors were very nice, and saw positive results before the injury. However, the injury has been so life-altering, any benefits I had have now gone and it was soooo not worth it. I spent a few hundred dollars on classes and now am facing over $1,000 in medical bills including 3 months and counting of physical therapy, not to mention being on a medical leave of absence for over 2 months (i.e., no income). I attended "Breaking down the Barre", stayed after classes to ask questions, and really attempted to do everything right. People seem to have trouble believing one can be injured in barre... I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe since the instructors mention "protecting your lower back" frequently. Obviously, there is a reason why!! (P.S. I'm the second back injury my chiropractor has seen from a barre class). I was only able to use 6 classes in the month of March before my injury... I had paid $175 for the month. I spoke to the owner about the dilemma, asking if I could get a partial refund (like just pay $16 for each class I attended which is the single class price), but I was told this was not possible, so those 6 classes cost me $29 each which is completely insane. She did say I could get an extension on the time frame when I was able to return to class. According to the PT & back specialist, that's a minimum of 6-8 months and if I'm actually recovered and pain free by then, I don't believe I'll risk returning to class. Literally the worst decision I've ever made, the worst investment I've ever made, and worst, most painful experience of my life. What was the injury? L3, L4, & L5 twisted, my sacrum was torqued, lifting my pelvis higher on one side than the other & causing those bones to rub against each other. The muscles that stabilize the vertebrae stopped working essentially. I was in so much pain that I did not sleep for 5 weeks and considered admitting myself to a mental institution (not really but kind of). Once I finally got in to see the back specialist, I had to take 4 prescription sedatives every night in order to sleep through the pain and muscle spasms. I took over 200 Motrin pills in 3 weeks before I got real drugs for the pain. People want to know: What was I doing in the class when I was injured? (Does it really matter?...) The pain was very subtle at first and the class is so fast paced I'm not sure exactly which exercise did it... though I have a pretty good idea. However, by the time I walked out the door from that class, I was in PAIN. And it only got worse over the following weeks. I know there are lots of people that take these classes and love them. I think that's awesome if you can make it through with everything still in tact. I just wanted people to be aware that it doesn't work for everyone and there are risks involved. read more

I attended pure barre north shore while visiting family on Chattanooga and had a great experience. I was able to sign up and reserve a spot online and was welcomed immediately when walking into the studio. Bonus - they are offering a free first class for new customers in July and August 2018( so here's your chance to try it out). Pure Barre North Shore was an immense disappointment. Here is what I look for in a workout: a thoughtful and appropriate warm up, respect for individual needs, and an instructor with thorough knowledge of body mechanics and the body's capabilities. I go to improve my muscular function and most of all to have FUN. Pure Barre advertises: Find everything you're looking for in a workout at Pure Barre. Here is what I got: NONE OF THE ABOVE. The warmup was nonexistent, the pace of the class was frenetic and irrational, the instructor was neither knowledgeable nor flexible, there was no mention of going at your own pace, and there was no allowance for individual abilities MUCH LESS preferences. It was definitely NOT FUN. When I was asked for feedback and gave it the response of the owner was "We are a franchise and everything taught in class is created by corporate. You can actually take a Pure Barre class anywhere in the country and get the same experience" confirming that there is no room for the individual and her needs in this class. If you don't "love" your experience--forget about a refund, it will not happen. Here the customer is neither right nor deserving of a refund for a bad experience. The class is like a bad junk food place pretending to be a gourmet experience. THIS CLASS IS A SETUP FOR INJURY. DON'T DO IT!! read more
