I find the pizzas here to be quite expensive- I tried a make your own pizza once with Italian cream sauce, grueyere cheese, caramelized onions, and eggplant. It was an excellent combination. The eggplant is fried (or deep fried maybe) and has a really nice taste- the caramelized onions have a bit of spice to them and a reddish color and they go well with the Gruyère. The pizza is cut into 4 slices which are huge and floppy, that I need to fold it slightly, but it's still an enjoyable slice. The crust is really nice- usually I don't eat the whole thing but with this it's not overly thick or oily, and the ends are edible instead of being dense blocks of cardboard. The ambience inside is nice and it's best to come by for a pickup in the middle of a weekday when it's empty to get a quick order. read more

it's been a little over a year since my first review. I'm not sure what happened in that time, but wow, that may have been the worst pizza I've had in recent memory. I went during a weekend afternoon and there were very little customers there, so it's not like it was very busy. We sat outside and some of the tables were noticeably not cleaned with pizza bits already there. We ordered a couple of basic cheese pizzas and they must have forgotten to put it in. I had to check in myself because the server was MIA and it was clearly a rushed job to try and get the pizzas done. The pizza crust was burnt, but also the dough itself was somehow still underdone. The little bits of mozzarella they used had so much moisture that it was creating little pools on the crust and made the whole thing soggy. By comparison, this was not how I remembered the pizza a year ago, but wow, I would've been much better off just ordering at like a Domino's or something. read more

The ambiance was nice, and so was our server. My mother in law took one sip of lemonade and scrunched up her face and said how awful it was. Our server had the same reaction when he tried it too, which was funny. Several of us ordered pizza. My husband liked his. My son's pizza was extremely soupy and liquidy. He only ate one slice, which is unlike him. Mine was a tiny bit better as far as texture and flavor goes, but I think they forgot about mine, because it took so long to come out. The crust is perfectly airy with that slight char, chewiness, and every topping just works. Their happy hour is such a steal!! Took the family out to Pupatella tonight for the first time. I have been wanting to give this place a try since the building was covered from the old Pizza Hut. Walking in the ambiance is fresh, modern, and inviting! The dining room has been fully renovated, the roof trusses and under roof exposed, and a new bar area added. Really love what they did! We were seated immediately and our drink order was taken. We ordered a couple pizzas and appetizers (garlic bread balls, mozz balls, and a caprese salad). The caprese salad was poor quality. The tomato were flavorless and seemed to have been refrigerated. The mozz tasted as though one more day and it would have turned. For $16, it was disappointing. The garlic bread balls had no garlic whatsoever. They were little balls of fried dough / bread ... but again, no garlic. Felt disappointed. The mozz balls were great! Of all the appetizers, this one was the best. Pizzas came out shortly thereafter. Dough was great! Sauce was underwhelming. Meatballs on the pizza were not that good either. Seemed to be loaded with bread crumbs and did not have good flavor. Oh.... The service was excellent despite the food issues I noted. Our server was attentive, quick, and very polite! After 20% tip, our check was $132. I live 5 minutes from the resturant and unfortunately would not return again. read more

Meh. That's how I feel about Pupatella. If you like thin, artisan type pizza then you're in luck. I ordered a margarita pizza and the crust couldn't even hold up the minimal sauce and cheese. It definitely was not blow your socks off type. Service was good, although our server had WAY TOO MUCH COLOGNE ON. If I can taste it in my mouth after you walk away, we have a problem. There's just no other place like it with the perfect chew to the dough, light enough that I don't feel gross eating the entire pizza, and toppings that all go together unexpectedly. I visited Pupatella because The Baltimore Banner reported it was one of the only restaurants in Maryland with a seal of approval from the Associazione Verace Pizza napoletana (The True Neapolitan Pizza Association). After two orders, I feel torn. My first time, I ordered a plain margherita pizza. The second time (about two weeks later): a margherita with fresh mozzerella, ricotta, and sausage. Both orders were pickup orders; The food was ready promptly with minimal [though polite] interaction from staff. As for the food itself, the cheese tasted like water--No flavor. My first time, although I was underwhelmed by the cheese, the quality of the dough was enough for me to go back again. I doubled the cheese on my second order, and still found it flavorless. Even worse: I found the dough had an extremely sour and unpleasant flavor. Still, the restaurant is well loved, so I am willing to try Pupatella again (perhaps something other than pizza). Decided to swing by Pupatella for a late lunch with my boyfriend yesterday. They have a nice lunch special that goes on between 11 AM - 3 pm where you can get a side salad and 9 inch pizza for around $12. I ended up getting the sausage and onions (it was average). My boyfriend got the caivano (which I recommend for meat lovers). Service was really good, our waitress was Rachel and she was very sweet and attentive. The restaurant was really empty though. There was maybe one other table in the dining area beside my boyfriend and I so it was a bit awkward. The music also stopped working for some odd reason. Abby, was so nice. She helped me change a topping. I didn't want tomatoes and I added red onions and she didn't add an eye about me being a little difficult. I tend to not be an nag when it comes to things like toppings, but I just wanted to get the onions today. The food was fresh and tasty. It came out fast. The atmosphere was nice there was an outdoor seating area with tables and the connected to an open air bar. Kitchen staff was friendly. Speaking Spanish is helpful if you want to converse with them. The rest of the staff spoke English and was pleasant to deal with. I would definitely recommend this location. I will also be trying their other locations in Northern Virginia. read more

Our waitress seemed like she really didn't want to be at work anymore. Maybe she was tired but just wasn't warm and fuzzy. We ordered the bruschetta which looked great when it came out but lacked flavor. The presentation was nice but the tomatoes had no taste. Definitely needed some seasoning. They tasted fresh but bland. We built our own Nepotalitan pizza with regular sauce, fresh mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni and red onions. We wanted to add Spinach but they only allow 4 toppings (cheese counts as a topping) because the crust is so thin. When the pizza came out it looked great. 4 pretty good sized slices. The beef pepperoni was cooked well, the sausage and mozzarella had a good flavor. I liked the crust my Wife didn't too much but the biggest issue is the middle of the pizza dough didn't cook all the way through and it was still raw. Because we both started eating it from the crust inward (you couldn't really NY pizza slice this thing) we didn't find out until you got to the end. This happened to us both on our second slice. There were some bright spots but overall a lackluster experience for us. We had high hopes that we found another pizza spot, but alas that is not the case Try it for yourself you may like it, just not our cup of tea. read more

Let's be honest though, you're coming here for the food not the beer. The beverage menu include a solid variety for every diner. The veggie panini was fresh, flavorful and filling. The bread has just the right chew to crunch ratio and isn't so thick so as to overpower the filling. The smoked mozzarella elevates each veggie filled bite, adding complexity without dominating. The BYO pizza got top marks despite arriving with only one of the two requested cheeses. 4.1.25 The softest crust and lightest pizza I've ever had. The pizzas are 11". I purchased the onion tart which came with caramelized onions and bacon. My hubby ordered the pepperoni. We both liked our pizzas. However mine had a little too much onion. I ended up scraping some off. Whoever in the kitchen cut our pizzas didn't do a good job. We had to recut it and I am a terrible cutter. I also ordered the Panna cotta for dessert which had Nutella and sprinkles in it. It was my first time having Panna cotta in the states, and the custard itself is different than what I am used to having at an ice cream shop. When I mixed the Nutella with the custard, it was fine. Not sure that I am a fan of the texture, but at least I can say I tried it. Apparently between 3 and 6 PM they have social hour pizzas. We saved $10 on our total tab for discounts off the pizzas. We enjoyed the friendly service and the pizza was good, but not our favorite. One thing we found odd was that the entrance to the restaurant was on the opposite side from where the signage is. There was a sign on the door that said go to the other side. That didn't make very much sense to me if they want patrons to enter through the other side that is where the signage to the restaurant should be. read more

Yum! And they are very accommodating when it comes to making changes. We asked for arugula instead of escarole on our salad. No problem. We asked for fresh mozz instead of brown on our mushroom pizza. A $3 upcharge, but easily done. If you like heavy crust pizza with thick tomato sauce, this is not the place for you. This was my first time here. We came with another family and reserved a table for 8 people. The seating was good and they were ready for us early. Service was friendly and we had no issues with any of that. I had the PLT panini, which is made using pizza dough instead of bread. It was good, but I'd say stick with the pizza instead. It may seem a little pricey for what you get, but I do think use better and more unique ingredients. For example, they have all beef pepperoni and all angus meatballs, which isn't something you normally see. Their spicy brussel sprout appetizer was excellent (personally, i think better than the pizza and maybe my favorite item of the meal). Patella's Neapolitan Pizza is flavorful, the dough soft, chewy and the crust was good. I would have liked a slight bit more char on the crust as a Neapolitan pizza crust should be. We have seen other photos where the pizza had a better char. That said, The crust held up to toppings. The sauce is very nice delicate and doesn't overwhelm the pizza at all. We had a margarita with fresh mozzarella and they also have a burrata option. Also we had the prosciutto and arugula pizza which we also loved. The prosciutto was not overly salty which we were happy about. Service is good, ambiance is very nice. I do wish the pizza was served very very hot. But that's just a preference. We ate at Pupatella for the first time tonight. Our family ordered the spicy Brussel sprouts, the fried zucchini sticks, and four different kinds of pizza, with one salad. The pizza crust is decent, but could be a more crispy. The sauce was watery and not super flavorful except for salt. The mozzarella is minimal and the shaved Parmesan (if your pizza has this ingredient) is really inconsistently applied. I ordered the prosciutto and arugula pizza. The prosciutto just tasted old and had a weird texture-- like kind of gummy. Our waiter was very efficient and did a good job. Hubby ordered a salad with a side on balsamic vinaigrette. But, what he got was straight up balsamic vinegar. No oil, no emulsification. That would have worked if they brought some olive oil. So not a terrible big deal- but not a plus. Again, waiter was awesome, said thanks for letting me know. My husband and one son got pizza with meatballs. I think this might have been the worst texture in a meatball I've ever tried. It was grainy, and had very little flavor. Fried zucchini ok, spicy Brussel sprouts a bit overcooked, hot honey not distinguishable. They were ok. Cream soda with lemon and peach is what my oldest son ordered. It seemed more like Horchata thickness with a different flavor profile. He really liked it. Pupatella was fabulous for lunch today! The lunch size pizzas are just right, the included lunch salad is a favorite of ours, crisp greens, kalamata olives, halved grape tomatoes, and oil/balsamic dressing. We had the onion tart and the ham/mushroom/mozzarella pizza which were done to perfection! We paired ours with a glass of the house chianti and a glass of the house super tuscan, and were amazed by the quality of the wines, and the pours. This may have been one of the best lunches we've had in recent memory, and we'll be back next week to try another pair of their lunch special pizzas and other reds on thier wine list. A new tradition: weekly lunch at Pupatella! I want to particularly commend the service! Sarah, our server, was fun, engaging, attentive, and generally a pleasure to meet.
