    Vegetable samosas.
    Chicago L.

In my previous review, I spoke about the wonderful samosas. It is a baked pastry with potatoes, lentils, and spices. These are not the small, generic bites that you see at the grocery stores but they are jumbo and sell for $1.00 a piece. The service was great. The guy who was there on Sunday was super friendly and so was the lady who is usually there. I hope to be back very soon!

I come here often for their gujiya's which is one of my fav Indian sweets & hard to find. Their gujiya's are perfectly sweet, good pastry to filling ratio and if I'm not wrong - about $8 for a pound, which is around 4-5 gujiya's. Each one is quite big, so pretty satisfied. Tried couple other mithai's/sweets as well..hmm wouldn't say was blown away but it's decent. Heard a lot about their samosa's and mathi/ matri (long savory deep fried pastry, usually enjoyed with chai) and looking forward to trying those. One of my relatives got sweets shipped for their Indian wedding in Connecticut from this place. Heard a lot of positive reviews from them and that they always come here when they visit Chicago. Ambiance- it is not really a place to sit and eat your sweets or snacks. They do have seating but again I recommend it just for take outs. Reading other comments about going in with a man and not alone as a woman does not hold true at all. It's a family business and sometimes I was catered by a lady behind the counter. Seemed safe enough to me. Also, they accept cards over $10 but she excused me one time for an $8 bill of gujiya's. Thought that was sweet.

It is within walking distance, which is a plus, though I do watch the prices and go to Mariano's or Jewel when they offer more for less. EVERYONE at the meat/cheese counter is great, and friendly. They really do know their stuff, though at times, I wish they had a ticketed numbered system. It would prevent me from going off on some of the older Eastern Euro clientele when they try to butt in line. NOT happening! The cashiers are efficient, though there is a tall male one that is new to me. Feels like his name should be Draco. Would almost pass for AI, due to his height an personality, though AI can be programmed to be charming and efficient. He literally saw me put down items on the belt and looked like he was confused as to what his role was, then asked me if I wanted a bag for all my purchases, despite it being obvious that I had none with me. I had to get snippy, because, well, I had to get snippy. Oprah did mention them in one of her shows, so they got "trendy" afterwards, but as other reviewers have said, they do carry items that you would find more at a Treasure Island than a Jewel, Aldi, or Mariano's. They are good for that. Now, if they would only work on their AI cashiers and make them more personable, then I would give them a five star rating. Especially since peeps in the hood voted down Amazon from taking over and planting seeds on the corner of Western and Lawrence, to take over the grocery store market.

It's a pretty standard small grocery store, with a few things that may be hard to find elsewhere. They have some international brands, although the Mexican grocery store farther west on Lawrence (Lindo Michigan) is a better bet for Central American things. They sell some local brands, including freshly-roasted coffee from Brü Coffeeworks, also on Lawrence. Prices are a smidge higher than you might find elsewhere, but at least they're consistent and don't require you to download an app or join a frequent shopper club or whatever. I do wish they would stay open a little later. The staff are helpful, and they have a good selection of spices and seasonings. I wasn't able to find caraway seed elsewhere, for some reason, but when I asked a staff member if they had any, he immediately took me to the exact spot on the shelf where they had it in two different container sizes.

There have been many times that I've visited such a joint with a five star rating on yelp and had a two star experience, only to look at the faces of the adorably sweet old couple that owns the place, and walking out knowing I wouldn't have the heart to leave a bad review. I fully expected Cremería La Ordeña to be such a place, but I was wrong. This place is five stars. I'm trying hard to work my way through Diana Kennedy's "The Art of Mexican Cooking." You'd think a place like Cremería La Ordeña, with its range of high quality, well priced ingredients specific to varying regions of Mexico, would be an asset on this task, but no. It's not. Why on earth would I spend 12+ hours making mole "the right way" when someone else has done that for me? This is not factory produced stuff that's been put in a jar - this stuff was made the right way by folks who have grown up with the cuisine and spared no expense or effort. And why would I spend five minutes over a food processor, taking little tastes, adding bits of this and that to balance the perfect salsa? Again, Cremería La Ordeña has done it for me. Several varieties, in fact. And their extra spicy salsa doesn't taste grassy at all, like many extra spicy things do. I love coming here and trying new things. I swooned over their nata, which is a Mexican version of clotted cream that's popular all over Latin America, and one day, on a health kick, I came here and decided to buy several kinds of dried beans. They have a ton of bean varieties. Despite being a small establishment, they have a rotating assortment of ingredients, so there are always more things to buy. I haven't found a Mexican grocery store I like more, and I don't imagine I will any time soon.

His English isn't too good, which maybe explains why, when I ask for someone who can answer my question, he simply hangs up. Nevertheless, a grocery that is apparently closed on Mondays and has people answering the phone that can't speak English and HANG UP on callers doesn't seem like much of a grocery at all. I don't think I need to actually go to the place to know that it's not the kind of business I want to patronize.

The rest of the store has the bakery and deli counters, and they have fresh meats if you like getting meaty. Also they have a stand to get fresh gelato. There is a robust menu of coffee and tea options, and the cases show off baklava, baked goods, and beautiful desserts. There is plenty of seating as well. I ordered the cinnamon honey latte, and it was great. I would have preferred 2% milk to whole, but they only offer whole milk and milk alternatives (almond, oat, and soy). After doing an hour or so of work, I spied a nearby customer enjoying the lentil soup, a fave of mine. It looked like it was served with a couple nicely toasted slices of bread, which put me over the edge. I ordered it. It came with a large lemon wedge and... a cold ciabatta roll (the kind you usually see used for a toasted caprese sandwich). Sadly, it wasn't very appetizing, so went to waste, The soup was great, though! The place was busy during the 2 hours I spent there, and I hope it continues! I'd like to see this cute cafe stick around.
