My wife and I were checking out the Ithaca Commons and leisurely walked into this comic shop. As soon as we walked in, the owner asked if we needed help. I said I was just browsing. He then asked if I collected comics. I said I used to up until 2005 but then sorta lost interest due to the over-saturation of the semi-annual crossover events, but I still have a rough knowledge of the happenings in the current Marvel Universe. The guy then started getting really pushy by suggesting that I get back into comic collecting by picking up a trade paperback. I felt pretty uncomfortable so I just kept browsing around the store. My wife tried making small talks asking if he had any nearby restaurant suggestions. He gave an awkward answer (I'm paraphrasing here), "not really, food is food." And then resumed pestering me to buy a book. If I haven't bought a comic in the last 20 years, what makes him think that I was gonna start in his shop during a trip 3000 miles away from home? I was getting really uncomfortable at this point with the awkward silence so I picked up an issue that I had mild interest in. This shop is for the "true believers" and "Constant Readers," not just the "Big Bang Theory" popular kids. Suzanne Gaffney Beason Former Marvel Comics Editor and Director of Editorial Scheduling for DC Comics For immediate release... On Saturday, August 12th from 7 to 9 pm a reception will be held for the opening of a new art exhibition at the Art Association of Oswego. The exhibition, by Suzanne Gaffney Beason, is titled My Life in Comics / My Life in Art. Part of the show is a display of Ms. Beason's personal collection of original drawings by well-known comic artists from her days at Marvel Comics, where she was assistant editor to high-profile comics such as Spider-Man and X-Men. Also on exhibit will be original prints and drawings from her current work as a graduate student in SUNY Oswego's Master of Arts program in Studio Arts. This includes both figurative work and highly abstract explorations of color, shape and texture. According to the Art Association's exhibition coordinator Bill DeMott, "As an undergraduate at SUNY Oswego in the 80's, Suzanne got a fantastic education, one that took her to New York City to work for the likes of Robert Blackburns' Printmaking Workshop NYC, Marvel Comics, Reader's Digest, Pearson Education and eventually DC Comics. But when DC moved to California, she made the brave decision to return to Oswego to pursue her first love, fine arts. Her current work is stunning and in her new art one can see all the knowledge gained from years of working with figures and bold abstractions. We welcome Suzanne and her husband Kirk to this community. Their energy and enthusiasm for art--and for music--are truly refreshing." The reception for this exhibition is free and open to the public. I was so happy to find a book store in Canandaigua and was excited to see that they were used…read morebooks! This store was quite well organized and had a good variety to choose from. The prices were good and I was happy to walk away with two books that have been on my list. My main negative for this shop was the placement of the children's books. They are in the back room which is a pretty far back there and a bit darker/more cluttered. I'd prefer to see the kids books in a spot that is more visible to adults and more welcoming.

New books were in pretty good order. The used books were a little bit more haphazard. Which I think…read moreit's actually a rule about used books. But everything was pretty clean, not too dusty. A lot of Harlequin romances, which is really cool. Large sections of used sci-fi and mystery. Nice lady at the front desk. I got several new books. There were a few dollars off the regular price. And I'm not sure they were actually new or if they were just newer, ya know? Because they weren't new, new. Lol. Anyway, I had a good time perusing the shelves and purchasing things I didn't need, including some little book earrings.
