Roadtrip pit stop! This bindery is reviving old stories from 17,18,19th sentries from inside this…read moreold church. It's "Christian families literature" and a lot of the stories teach a character lesson. They also create audio theatre productions. Super cool! Emily took us on a tour of the bindery and made some book recommendations.

They should be called Gaslighter. I still have PTSD from when I tried to report a libelous coworker…read more(who actually confessed to me her tendency to falsely disparage my work, a characteristic which I can document she shares in common with the office person) and, rather than bring her in to explain her actions which I came to report, her two supervisors stood over me with unmistakable grins on their faces (and you can hear it in the audio recording which I can produce) telling me I was making "accusations", that I was wrong (again without even calling in the allegedly libelous coworker), and ultimately firing me (still grinning monstrously). And then later (after I scored them on Google reviews) they would try to pretend that I had been scaring them. So yeah, this is easily the most toxic organization I have ever worked with. As a self-taught student of, and for this purpose a periodic participant in, cults (see the BITE model or simply look for the narcissist on top [that is, a person who never sincerely compliments others unless they have some mechanistically strategic reason]), I find that "Lamplighter Ministries" (or rather LAMPLIGHTER INTERNATIONAL INC) is nothing if not a hierarchy of delusional and/or sociopathic radicals, but they get away with it (leaving aside for the moment the possibility of hidden ties) because they hide their wackier doctrines behind more mainstream Christian teachings paired with banal pop culture to diffuse critical thinking. (Oops, didn't work on me.) UPDATE: I made the original Google review after, as I narrate above, they physically intimidated then fired me in retaliation for reporting a coworker trying to add lies about me to my weekly employee review then admitting she'd lied. Their whole game had then become one of faking that they were afraid of me when it was they who had physically menaced me, while I was seated the entire time (you read that correctly) and kept answering their repetitive questions and correcting their repeated misstatements during which they, standing, cornered me. When they saw this Google review, Lamplighter's top person breached a contract with me as well as evicting me their tenant (the tax record showed that the house was owned by "Lamplighter Ministries Intem" ["I-n-t-e-m"]) WITH ONE HOUR'S NOTICE (see photo of text message) prior to the end of our verbal contract. It was totally worth it though. This breach of verbal contract was no sort of isolated incident: I've documented daily-plus falsehoods often secreted until my Friday "performance review" charade, always defaming and disparaging my work or character, clearly threatened by my vastly superior skill set (in both typography and general bindery) but unable to admit it to themselves. And then this Emmy-worthy cast of characters turns around and feigns shock about this review. Delusional prima donnas to the last. When I complained and the peace officer wanted to speak with their leader, the latter got into his rancher costume and even walked bow-legged. I've never seen such a con-artist-level fear of truth in my life. I am starting to talk with public officials and find my experience corroborated and my suspicion that they never wanted to hire me long-term very nearly confirmed as well.

I did a little min tour of independent bookstores in Rochester recently & Book Culture was my first…read morestop... which, honestly, set the bar pretty high. I didn't even realize that I had stopped in on new release Tuesday, so I was especially delighted to find a whole bunch of books that had been on my list to find and purchase being freshly put on display in the front of the store. Lovely, welcoming, and service-minded staff that are happy to assist in all your book-related needs *OR* just let you wander the store aimlessly (as I did) to pick up anything that grabs your attention for purchase. Great selection of books and gifts, wonderfully organized, easily available street parking, and overall just such a gem of a shop. I especially loved the "blind date with a book" selections that came with little summaries of each book. I ended up with "Mystic River" after picking a psychological thriller with dark and emotional crime stories, estranged friendships / childhood trauma, murder investigations, and working class settings as my featured themes. I remember watching the movie years ago, but had never read the book... so now I'm super excited to dive in. TL;DR Setting the bar high on the independent bookstore scene in ROC. I'll be back to this location before too long, for sure.

They have a large selection of a range of books as well as bookish gifts. The products sold here seem to be very good quality. I've also found some good picks on their sale carts. This isn't the cheapest bookstore, but it is definitely one of my favorites to browse for new books and gifts.

Rick's Recycled Books is the best book store in the city of Rochester. Yes, I know, there's Barnes…read more& Noble in Pittsford, and if you're looking for a Starbucks latte or kid's toys that's a nice place to go too. But if you're looking for an incredible selection of books stacked floor to ceiling. amazing science fiction paperbacks or mysteries, walls of fiction classic or modern, books on history, self-help, the occult, you name it, this has always been my go-to spot. It's wonderful, it's affordable, you can lose yourself for hours there. A real ornament to the city of Rochester. There is one sad thing about it, however. Recently Rick, the founder and owner, passed away from pancreatic cancer. His son Richard has taken it over, but Richard also is facing spinal surgery and will have to close the shop for at least two months if he can't find a replacement to watch the bookstore while he's recovering, or cover the bills. A friend of the shop created a Gofundme page for Richard and Rick's Recycled Books at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-with-medical-bills-and-money-to-keep-my-store The loss of the bookstore would leave a vast, vast hole in the intellectual life of this city, and any reader of this review who can help, should. If only to celebrate the memory of Rick Senior himself, a great guy, and the creator of the best bookstore this town has.
