Still, sick happens, so when I was finally fed up with years of sinus infections, I ended up at Carolina Ear Nose & Throat. I found the examination (if you'd like to call it that) brief, and the doctor really didn't seem to want to listen to what I'd been going through. He simply decided I HAD to have a cat scan (which my insurance would not cover), and then we'd "talk options." I felt rushed through and not "heard." And when I found out my insurance wouldn't cover the cat scan, I decided to chalk it up to experience and move on... then, I got their bill. It was, excessive. For taking a "brief" medical history and looking up my nose for 10 seconds, excessive to the extreme. I contacted them, asking if this was my out of pocket after insurance, and I was assured it was, however they would be happy to accept payments. Fine. I made the first payment last month, and was about to make the second one this month, when I saw they had marked me "past due" and were mentioning collection! I immediately paid them off and hope this is the end of it. In the end I feel like they were more interested in spending my money on tests and less about helping me get better. At least for me, this was not a place to find solutions to my sinus issues.

I called the office and left a message. No call back. Left a message in MyChart. No reply. Got a call from billing, paid for the office visit, and asked that they check on the $336 charge. No follow-up. I called the billing office to ask what was happening. "Oh, we'll send this to the customer care team. You'll have to wait 30 days for an answer." No info from "Customer Care". 3 weeks later I get a bill marked "Final Notice". I'm moving my care to Duke.

I mention this in the service of saying that I have a lot of experience dealing with a lot of doctors about a lot of different kinds of illnesses, symptoms, treatments, and etc. Dr Clarkson is grade A, five star beef. All wool and a yard wide. Out of the forty-odd docs with whom I have had meaningful experience, he's in the top three, and he may very well be the best of all of them. He is attentive to the patients and considers carefully before answering questions. He is calm, unhurried, and rational, and he explains what he is thinking as well as what he is not thinking in a considerate, structured, and clear way, rather than just handing down a snap verdict, writing a prescription, and peacing out. He wasn't bubbly or super friendly. Maybe it was too early & he hadn't fully woken up from the weekend when he saw me this morning. I wasn't wowed by him, so my decision will be harder. I got sent back for a hearing test and that lady was super friendly and easy to talk with. I really didn't have to wait long in any of the rooms I was in, which is unusual these days. Sue Horlick, one of the PA's in the office, told my friend that she could give her epinephrine shot but would then need to call an ambulance or I could take my friend the the ER, which was less than a mile from this office. We elected to just go to the ER. My friend was emotional and scared because the cause of the reaction was unknow. As we were leaving Sue Horlick said, "Don't go to Chick-Fil-A first, go right to the ER. WHAT?? Why would you say something so unprofessional to someone who is looking for help.
