Providence Veterinary Hospital - East Patient

Our dog was treated by at Providence Veterinary Hospital-East, by a substitute veterinarian, Dr. Alex Herman. She was outstanding in every way! The practice was fully booked on the Saturday we visited, but Dr. Herman took the time to clearly explain our pet's problem and his future care plan. She acknowledged us for taking good care of our dog and for keeping his vaccinations up to date. With a great smile, she educated our spirited four year old grandson about allergies and mast cells! I Googled Dr. Herman and discovered she provides "high quality and compassionate care" in her regular job as a Veterinarian at the Oakland Zoo, CA, where she treats rescued mountain lions, tiny poison dart frogs, California condors, and giraffes, and others. How cool is that?!!! Thank you Providence Veterinary Hospital-East, for providing excellent care! Note: My family has been taking our fur babies to this veterinary hospital since 1972. :-)

This was my first time coming to this location. Are usually go to the location on Webster Street but there was a mixup, but everything worked out just fine. It's always hard finding a good vet clinic to take your pets to because you want to feel comfortable and confident since you rely on them to make sure your pet is healthy and in good hands. This is the place to go and BOTH locations are great. PROS -Easy appointment booking online or calling. -Staff is so friendly, patient, understanding and helpful. -easy drop off appointment due to Covid safety. Just park in the spot, call the front desk and let them know what space number you are in. Easy. -good location -Clean office -They do NOT try to gouge you with unnecessary services or medications. I've had bad experiences with other vet clinics before with my other dog. -I feel comfortable and always have a peace of mind whenever I take my pet here. -I have had to book with different veterinarian doctors so I could get the soonest appointment, but they all were great and just all consistently good. :) My last two visits were with Dr. Thurman and she was outstanding. Very thorough and patient when explaining things I wasn't sure about.

They even gift wrapped our doggo medicine

While I spent a lot of money, I was happy to know that my dog finally got some treatment for his arthritis. Due to my schedule, they scheduled me for his monthly Librela shot at the Pacific location. I got a call today (on the day of his appointment) saying that I need a record of his vaccinations before he can get his second dosage of Liberla shot. During the first visit, they never once mentioned that I need to submit his record of vaccinations, as I don't have them. They said that according to CA law, they can't give him his Librela shot without the rabies booster, which is understandable, but I wish they would have told me that even prior to sedating him, giving him X-rays and his first dosage of Librela. Since my dog desperately needs his Librela shot today, I asked if they could comped the $37 rabies shot. They said "no". I spent $1800 on the first vet visit and his monthly Librela shot is $180. I would have never done that if I would have known about their requirements and terrible customer service. The reception stood firm on their $37 rabies shot requirement, never apologized or even empathized with my frustration. It's ridiculous how fast they take our money, then make rules and refuse to compromise because they know that our pets need the car. Very disappointing.

Every interaction feels super easy and quick, and the staff is both knowledgeable and compassionate. The staff are clearly well trained and every vaccination, sample collection, and conversation is handled with expertise. The front desk staff are really friendly and It is really easy to communicate with their team to make appointments, ask for refills, etc, which is absolutely not the case with every vet. We are so grateful to have found this wonderful vet and I seriously recommend them to everyone I know because everyone deserves to have a vet this awesome. Also, the area is super nice and quiet, perfect for a nice walk before or after your appointment. There are some good human food options nearby too!

Marina Village Review…read more TLDR: If you would like to get obscenely over-charged, manipulated, lied to, misled, and then discarded when they can't get more money out of you, then definitely go to Marina Village. You don't have to believe me. You can see the actual EVIDENCE in the documents below: I had three bad experiences with Marina Village: 1). A quote from Marina Village for $3285.53 $3542.33 vs. the invoice for $1787 that actually paid at Modern Animal. That is almost $2K in "ad ons" that Marina Village charges EXTRA for (such as anesthesia and pain meds), but are "included" standard by Modern Animal and other reputable vets. See copies of the estimate from Marina Village vs the actual invoice from Modern Animal. Totally appalling. That is almost $2K more than their competition. 2). I needed a USDA health travel certificate, and they told me I could only get one if I transferred my dog's care to their office. The ONLY REASOn I put up with this vet is because of the travel certificate. I made an appointment (for $700 for an exam and paperwork), but two days later, Dawn, the practice manager, cancelled my appointment because their staff wasn't trained they didn't want to fulfill their promise. I changed vets exclusively for the certificate, and they refused to provide me the service because and untrained staffer decided to research everything herself instead of asking me for records that I had readily available, but she didn't ask for. No apology, no empathy, no nothing. See the email below for proof. Yet, they are still listed with the USDA and still misleading people and taking their money. Needless to say, I sent a message to the USDA to complain about false advertising. 3). I felt manipulated by one of the vets into a completely unnecessary procedure while I was reeling from the loss of my husband to cancer, and the pressure of taking care of my mom who had just had a stroke. Details below. You have been warned! But don't take my word for it -- look at the evidence I am sharing.

The staff can be rude, indifferent, and sometimes unaccountable. Phone calls rarely get answered in real time. I've never had this experience with another clinic - if they can't answer, most will at least acknowledge you and put you hold. One time I even had to come in person because no one answered the phone, despite being on hold the whole time. When I walked in, there were no other patients in the lobby, so it's unclear why calls aren't answered. Again, there is a pattern of not answering the phone. I also have always found it odd and somewhat off putting that the front counter displays a sign suggesting the "most valuable gift" is promoting referrals to others. Very business forward... The last straw for us was having to wait two weeks for a tech appointment (for an injection) when our dog was itching a lot. They had no other options to help her feel comfortable in the meantime and didn't seem to care, so we ended up going to another vet who could see her the same week. We appreciate the care they gave our dog over the years, and we've always had a positive experience with Dr. Rabbi. Unfortunately, due to the drop in service and attentiveness, we will not be returning.

I then went to a few other vets prior to JLPH who gave me quite high prices for tumor removal surgeries, so I was weighing my options when coming to JLPH. Dr. Holmes came in whopping with telling me a full leg amputation would actually be the best bet for him to live a long, complications and cancer free life since there is a high chance the removed tumor would grow back and it would leave the leg very weak. She mentioned other vets probably didn't suggest an amputation for my cat was because he is obese but she was transparent and said she has seen cases where they do just fine as tripods. My husband and I decided to take the plunge and let her surgically amputate his entire leg. Not only was the procedure and care for him done exceptionally well, the aftercare the team showed me and my cat was also very kind and reassuring. It's been a month and a day since the procedure and our big tripod is doing great! He's currently on a weight loss journey (thank you Dr. Holmes for the prescription diet) and is able to walk down AND up our flight of stairs. They texted me the wrong appointment time and when I got there they told me my appointment was canceled. I was baffled because I confirmed the appointment that morning. They said they made a mistake and were understaffed, so they couldn't see me. I had to reschedule and come back a week later. The only reason why I agreed to even come back was because they offered a discount for new patient exam fee for the both of my dogs AFTER I asked. I came back today to get their ears checked for an infection. They said it would take 30-45mins but called me to pick them up 1 hour and 6mins later. Then they said their microscope BROKE so they couldn't determine if they had a bacterial/yeast infection. I still had to pay for their ear cleanings after this experience ($71 each). They said to come back a week later if their ears still smelled like they had a yeast infection. No, thanks. They also ignored my concerns when I asked about antibiotics for my senior dog's bad breath even though she had a dental procedure a few months ago. They said they would check her mouth in the back, but when I came to pick them up they never followed up. I didn't ask because at this point I was incredibly frustrated with the whole experience. I definitely will not be coming here again and do not care for a response from the clinic. Please check the other low star reviews. For the surgery, Dr. Jones did an incredible job. She successfully removed everything--it was a best-case scenario, especially since it was a delicate surgery on my dog's face. Dr. Macdonald provided her opinions to the team and is extremely knowledgeable about mast cell tumors. She makes sure to let you know about ALL possible outcomes but always aims for the best possible scenario. That said, the communication leading up to it was difficult. Dr. Berkley was initially scheduled to do the surgery due to a scheduling mix up. She provided some conflicting and alarming information not specific to the medical evidence present in my dog's particular case. She backed out suddenly on the day of surgery after seeing my dog. That shook me a bit, and I think the bedside manner and case review before phone calls could be improved. But ultimately, the care itself from Dr. Jones, Dr. Macdonald and Dr.Partin was top-notch. I was a little hesitant because the location is in west Oakland. We had always been to VCA in SL but I knew it would cost us an arm and leg. So I decided to call first to see what I needed to do to get my doggo seen. I spoke to Isela and she was very friendly and informative. She told me how to handle my pet and how to get there. Maps has you drive up to the building but you should actually park in their lot. Their lot is off Adeline, before the under pass. Go up to the gate and press the call button for them to let you in. I let Isela know my dog is reactive so waiting in the lobby was not ideal. Luckily there were rooms available for my husband and I to chill in before he got seen. The staff is super friendly and told us the wait would be long. Although there weren't many people that night, they had some animals with bigger emergencies and surgeries were happening. Totally understandable, this is an ER. We were taken to a room to wait and a vet assistant was right behind us ready to take vitals and notes on what happened. My doggo was in good spirits but I could tell he was a little anxious. We were told that there would be a 4-6 hour wait for a vet to see him and sure enough by the 4th hour our pup was taken to the back to get seen. After they took him back, finance came and let us know what the plan was and the cost. Look, if you can't plan for these emergencies for your pet, please don't be surprised with the cost. I will say VCA would've probably been more expensive but that didn't matter. What mattered to me was my dog and his care. Financial did say we had to pay the full amount and then we'd be refunded if some things weren't needed. She also told us that the doc will be in soon to explain what was next. Dr Black was the attending vet this night and she is the sweetest. She had no judgement and told me why some things were maybe needed and why they charged as precaution. It's all good, just a long as my boy gets better. She did explain what procedure she was going to do, as well as recovery and possible recovery symptoms. We were then told we could go home and they'd call us once the procedure was done. It had been about 5.5 hours since we were there and we were tired. After another 4 hours, almost reaching midnight, we were told my pup was ready. My husband and I drove back and even took my son who was so anxious about his "brother." We've had my dog since he was 4 months old, so yes he's my son's brother. Staff was talking to my son about all things marvel and that really helped put him at ease. We were then given instructions and medication and sent home. Service was amazing and I highly recommend OakVet for your emergency needs. I will be donating to them soon!
