Back home we used to watch Colorado's professional lacrosse team, Mammoth, and enjoy the sheer ridiculous spectacle that is an NLL game. So. When I heard that Boston was getting a professional team I was psyched. Unfortch that was 2008 and there was a player strike so alas, no games. Waah Waah. Luckily, new year, new team. Welcome 2009 and the inaugural season of the Boston Blazers. There are a few things to know about NLL games: The tickets are CHEAP. They start at $13, no joke. Screw those tickets though, drop the additional $10 and get down near the floor. The arena (The Garden) is oddly empty since people aren't huge lacrosse fans and Boston hasn't quite caught on that there's another team to be maniacal about. Now, this doesn't mean people aren't taking their shirts off and screaming at the ref, cause they are. Also, you might see people in Spiderman masks. I don't get it either. BUT if you hate packed arenas, this is a game for you. The game is *violent*. Like hockey used to be before they softened it up for "safety" and "players health". Bah. The players beat each other with sticks, fists, and whatever is nearby. The shove one another in to the glass with an amazingly satisfying THUNK and only wear padding on the upper half of their bodies (well, presumably a cup but whatevs). So yeah, these games are off the hook. The Blazers thus far have a pretty good record especially for a freshman team. They won the game we saw with two points in the last 10 seconds of the game. The winning point within .5 seconds. Awesome. They also have dancers, The Sparks, if that's your gig and for the kiddies a creepy mascot Scorch. Something for everyone. Hopefully more people will get on board so that they stick around this time. Just not enough to raise ticket prices to ridiculous levels.

Indoor Lacrosse is too fun to pass up and this is the first year the Blazers are playing at the Garden. What started as taking advantage of sweet ticket deals to attend a sports game has turned into a love of this team. The Blazer games at the Garden are outstanding. The sport is quick like hockey, only more fighting! Yes! And they play music the whole time, even through game play! Woo! And everyone seems to be having such a great time! Awesome! And the team is pretty good! Score! Captain Dan Dawson is leading his team, along with a great goalie (NICE SAVE, COSMO!). Don't write off lacrosse just because it's Celtic and Bruin season...stick around for Boston's newest team!

We've gone to Dodd Stadium several times now for drive thru covid testing. Keep in mind that the…read moreline can get pretty long, so we always plan to get there 1-2hrs before they open. There are 2 different lines, 1 for essential workers, priority and then a standard community line. The staff comes to your window before you go in and radio in the information of those testing with your ID. If you have an appt. they have your information in the system and print out the info on your vile. When it is your turn, you drive into the tent and the staff comes to your window to do the test once you confirm the information on the vile is correct (name, and D.O.B.). They are friendly and the process is quick, so it's not a horrible experience. If needed, they have paperwork to hand you to review the process and information. You don't have to touch anything, just roll your window down and they do the swabbing in your nose and put the swab in a vile and into a separate individual plastic bag for processing. Once you're done, they open the door and you can drive out of the tent. Your results come later via the contact information you provided.

What a great staff member you have on your team!!! She was fabulous! Kind, helpful and quick.

Great for kids - I'm the father of 3 girls under the age of 13. It's a great atmosphere for fans. The breakers didn't make the playoffs in this first year of the WPS league, mostly because we had some injuries and Kelly Smith left us for international duty for a long time. Straight up, though, despite the no-playoffs, the Breakers rule. This is the best opportunity to see high-level soccer in Boston (significantly better than the Revs), and for cheap, too - tickets usually run between $13 and $25 or so. And the hot dogs are cheap, too. The captain, Kristine Lilly, is total boss, even though she's almost 40. Most of the stars of the league are solid U.S. or international players, and it shows. The product on the field is hot. The atmosphere in Harvard Stadium is pretty cool, too - if you like giant concrete horseshoes, which I happen to love. Tickets are technically for specific sections of the stadium, but if you actually worry about sitting where you're supposed to, you've clearly never been to a game. Stupid non-fans who come to the games because they think it will boost their 5-year old daughters' self-esteem tend to be the sticklers for sitting in the "right spot." Also, because the stadium is just a giant open concrete U, it gets windy and cold at times, and rocky. If you don't have a giant ass like I do, you might want to bring something to sit on so your butt cheeks don't fall asleep. The only downsides to the breakers are the HUGE number of tweens in the stands. Because the WPS doesn't think that high-level female soccer can stand on its own as a sporting product (and unfortunately they are probably right), they've marketed the league really heavily as a method of building up young girls' sporting talents and confidence. I don't have a problem with that per se, but the mass of screaming 12 year-old girls who don't really know anything about the game gets irritating after a while. On the other hand, I'm a cantankerous bastard who hates children. Also, Harvard Stadium has football lines on the field. It's an unnecessary blemish, but it is kind of funny watching international players who've never dealt with an American mixed-use stadium try to figure out where the end lines are. The samba band that plays at the games is solid, the soccer is hot, our captain is a storm trooper (in the Star Wars sense: she's scary), and it's easy to get to on the 86, 66, 70 and 70a buses, or the red line. If you like good soccer, this is the place to check some out.

Salisbury Farm was the great place for pick your own strawberries. The patch (is that what you call…read moreit?) was the perfect size, not too big but not small. The cost of this giant bucket, I seriously have so many strawberries, was a great value. I do wish maybe they had a couple of sizes to choose from but I'm finding new recipes to use these guys. As you can see, the strawberries are vibrant red and they taste delicious.

Weekdays are obviously cheaper, we paid $10 for adult entry and then $.50 per tulip! (Kids entry is $5, toddlers free). You must buy your tickets online before going to the farm! They had an "in the pink" truck at the farm as well serving acai bowls and smoothies. Very vintage looking, added a cute touch. They have a couple of "show" gardens where you can get some nice pictures and also some nice props for photos. I will definitely be returning here for their next flower picking season and I highly recommend!

You got the sails, the yachts, the motor boats , rubber boats, everything with boats. All outdoors, all in the baking sun, and it was crowded. It was HOT. Homegirl is saved by the blood and should never be experiencing heat THAT hot. Her bronzey glow was at risk in that heat. Nonetheless she persisted and was on a mission to boat ittttt. Homegirls favorite part was exploring the cabins. The bedrooms, bathrooms, the granite, the fixtures, the seating! Of course compared to homegirls standards of welfare the yachts were quaint. Any who, Homegirl was dressed for that boating life. She was practical too though and wore flats. Homegirls driver had to circle around for 20 minutes to find parking. Lots were full, streets were packed. Homegirl had a long walk to the show and then had to walk on docks and take her shoes off to view every boat. If Homegirl wore her Choo's they'd be positively swiped! Homegirl has her assets, and her name to protect. Can you imagine the tabloids that would appear if Homegirl was shoeless at the show because she was robbed? Here's my HT-(Homegirl tip). Wear easily removable and normally priced shoes. The piggies need to be wrapped in Oscar Myer bacon, not Kobe beef. Speaking of food, Homegirl has got sophistication coming out of her day old bread. She turns that bread into croutons and makes it rain Parmesan. When at the boat show ((HT)) one must be respectful. Are these boats overpriced? Yes. Are the sweaty panties of nearly everyone here in a bunch? Yes. But remember, your panties are sweaty too. You paid for those tickets to look at boats all day boo boo sugar bear! Don't be hating on Lily Pulitzer Polly and Vineyard Vine Vince. Just ((HT)) enjoy an iced beverage, have fun looking at the boats and wear breathable cotton briefs. Homegirl has one last paragraph of quality HT. Homegirl is always ballin' on a budget. How else do you think Homegirl can afford the lifestyle she lives?! Look for coupon codes. Homegirl found $5 off per ticket bringing the price down from $17 to $12/ticket. That's $5 towards my leg of lamb roast dinner. Also be on the look out for freebies. Reusable bags, key fobs, pens, card holders-how you think Homegirl gets her ca$h fellas? Hate the game not the playa. There's money to be saved and fees to be waived. Overall Homegirl loved the boat show. The way wind blew through my blow dryed tresses, the way my eyes sparkled brighter than even the North Atlantic , and of course slaying my overall nautical look were the highlights of the show. Maybe I'll see you there next year and you can buy me somethin nice. Like a sweatshirt or something. Or one of those paddle boards. They look nice for Homegirl.

This was my first time to this event, and I had a great time. I thought the layout was simple and…read moreeasy to navigate; I thought the venders were great (I didn't realize there would be cider and liquor booths, so that was a nice surprise); and the fact that there was free pizza [donations accepted] was super rad. A couple of things that I thought would be helpful, after having been to Beervana (which does not make me an expert, mind you) are more rinsing stations... at Beervana there were orange coolers at every other booth with discard buckets beneath them, and this was a convenient way of rinsing cups. I didn't even realize there was a rinsing station at the GIBF until I was halfway through my night. The other thing that Beervana did that I found helpful was have a detailed list of what each vender brought to the event. This booklet had full descriptions of each beer and its ABV, but even just a list of names would be nice in case I wanted to purchase my favorite(s) later down the road but forgot what I had. (ex: I circled my favorites in the Beervana guide, because I'm the only nerd who paid attention to the book). Overall: I had a great time and would definitely go again next year!

When I first started going, the Fall fest, evening session, was absolutely bonkers. The amount of vendors was more than double what it was this year. I couldn't believe how much smaller the event was this year. I noticed that breweries that had always been at the fest previous years, were missing (Ravenous, Crooked Current, ect). It was strange how many new and/or popular breweries would skip out on one of the biggest beer events in the state. The hall at the convention center is quite large, and made it feel even more noticable of how much smaller this year's event was. Still, despite some of my fave breweries in RI and MA missing, my friends and I had a great time sampling the many brews. The event ran from 6:30pm to 10pm, so plenty of drinking time. The lines weren't too bad, which in previous years had been an issue. There was pizza provided from Pizza-Pier which was "free" but most were willing to give the suggested donation to charity (I believe it was for the RI food bank). I was also able to obtain samples from several other food establishments, including the new Bao from Tom's BaoBao. There was live music, giveaways from the local rock station, and plentiful porta potty's (and also regular bathrooms were open, too). It was a fun time, but just disappointing when compared to past years.

Perishable Theatre is an incredible demonstration of what happens when sheer will, passion for the…read morearts, dirty hard work, and a rare genetic disease intersect (for reals! See below). The shows are great (and getting better!), they have a slew of weekly events (improv! dance dance party party!), they offer affordable classes (playwriting! acting! belly dance!), AND they are a centrally-located studio rehearsal option for other performing artists. Jingle Belles and a Few Balls, their yearly fundraiser, is a well-cherished holiday tradition in Providence: a burlesque-heavy variety spectacular with a kooky theme - what else can get you in the holiday spirit but some breasts donning glittery Santa Claus pasties? Their tagline is 'Rhode Island's Research & Development Theatre' because they are one of the only theatres in Rhode Island that present original works from nation-wide sources. That's awesome, AND I think this label often gets them unfairly dismissed as a playground for the avant-garde theatre set. Although they do a fair share of experimental stuff, I have seen some incredible, super-audience friendly performances at Perishable. I've been attending shows at the theatre for the past five years, and the quality of performances increases steadily with each season. 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch', performed this past April, was seriously some of the best theatre that I have seen in Providence. The theatre is a black box with handicap access, tickets are affordable to the masses, the bathrooms are clean and spacious (there's two one-at-a-timers), and you can bring in drinks from the AS220 bar next door (bonus!). Free parking can be a pain if it's a busy night downtown, but parking behind the library is usually a good, free bet on any night of the week. The staff of the theatre is small, but VERY dedicated and includes Amy Lynn Budd - director of the theatre arts school and momma of the burlesque scene in PVD. As part of Perishable's season, Amy Lynn is presently working on the third iteration of her biographical play called 'The Thing That Ate My Brain....Almost', a wacky Ed Wood-esque horror flick/comedy detailing her experiences living with a rare and nearly-fatal genetic illness called VHL. Amy Lynn's play is a great example of the kind of the bizarrely gripping tales of humanity you'll see onstage at Perishable. From such a small budget and rather limited space comes some really well-done theatre. I would caution more conservative patrons to do some reading about a show before you attend - there is no denying that some of their work can be, well....weirder than your average community theatre. If you're looking for safe, stick to PPAC. If you're down for a little theatrics - get to Perishable!

I Heart Providence

I Heart Providence has been happening every year at the beginning of February since 2009. I have…read moreattended 3 of the 4 years and each year the event has gotten better. This year, East vs. West, was the best to date. The City Hall opened it's 3 floors to the city and 27 food vendors and local organizations from around the city came out to share with the public little nibblets and goodies for the night. The highlight of this year (2013) was the food battle which posted The Grange, North, and Julians from the Westside against Duck & Bunny, Cook & Brown, and Vanity from the Eastside. Each of the restaurants brought their A game, and served delectable tastings of pretty intricate and original menu items. My favorite was from The Grange. Once you got your food, there were 2 music performing spaces to sit/stand and enjoy the atmosphere. It's free events like this that really brings the Providence community together and makes this city different than those bigger cities that think they're better than little old Providence.

Currently I think of Pawtucket as "the place where Slater Mill and the DMV and Kafe Lila and Machines With Magnets are," but if I spend enough time at KL and MWM, my view will undoubtedly become more nuanced. Machines With Magnets is a recording studio, art gallery, and performance space that has fast become my favorite music venue and possibly one of my favorite places in Rhode Island. The inside is beautiful, with two large rooms decked out in cool white paint and beautiful hardwood flooring (one floor is stenciled with an absolutely stunning pattern). Art of varied quality adorns the walls. I have now had the pleasure of attending two shows here--an electronic music performance and Quintron + Miss Pussycat--and I enjoyed them both. Watching bands perform with art as a backdrop is a pleasure. The sound is good and the venue is run fairly efficiently. At the latter show, they quickly cycled through four bands by alternating the rooms in which each band performed. Very smart. The crowds are fun and interesting. Drinks, Dunkin' Donuts coffee, and even pizza are sold for reasonable prices. During my first visit, a friend turned to me and said, "I wish I lived here." "I wish I could DJ here," I replied. Until either of these things happens, I'll be stopping in periodically for more music and art. You should, too.
