The first year you file taxes for your business in California and on a federal level, it seems like everyone is out to get you! It can be incredibly daunting to not only differentiate tax liability, but avoid misfilings, fees, and things you aren't even aware of. That's when I realized a faceless entity like h&r block wouldn't cut it for me. I needed someone personable, reliable, but most importantly have the knowledge tailor-fit to my situation. Not only was Alex super knowledgeable about the details, but he was always there for me. If I had a question or concern, I never felt abandoned through the process. I think it's because he's so organized, since he was always extremely communicative and never let me down. Well-versed in his various specialties, I've never met anyone so sharp and on top of things. Overall, I'd recommend him to anyone and I'll definitely be referring friends.

He is professional, has excellent follow-through, and goes above and beyond to help his clients better understand their financial situations. A bit about the process: We started with a free, 15-minute consultation to determine whether Alex could help me. During this call, he gave me an estimate of how long it would take him to address my situation at his hourly rate of $325. Before Alex began work on my issue, I paid half of the upper end of the estimate upfront and Docu-signed an engagement letter. Alex took his time collecting all of my pertinent financial details and kept me apprised of the projected timeline throughout the process. We concluded with a scheduled call where Alex presented me with a very organized, well-thought-out PDF showing potential outcomes considering different variables. He spent an hour and 15 minutes patiently going over the PDF with me and answering every question I could come up with at the time. Since our scheduled call, Alex has remained available via email and phone for further inquiries. He is always friendly and eager to help. And when he can't come up with an answer or explanation on the spot, he researches it and follows up with what he's found. Highly recommended!

I called Garelick Business Management during tax season and again afterward. Their admin, Grace,…read moreanswered the phone, but she did not seem able to answer even basic tax-related questions. Normally, at a professional tax or business management firm, the person answering the office phone should at least be able to address basic questions or connect you with someone who can. Instead, she repeatedly said, "I'm sorry, Jessica Luengas is not available right now." I waited for a response from Jessica Luengas and her team, but no one followed up. Communication was very poor. It was also frustrating that there did not seem to be a regular team member, or even another tax preparer, available to answer basic questions. It made me wonder what kind of tax and business management operation this is if everything seems to depend on one tax person being available. For a firm offering these services, I expected a more responsive team and better client support. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this firm.

Made my account and uploaded our forms. Over a week and he never contacted me for any further clarifications or other supporting documents and didn't even bother to file the extension. I call him for an update and he was thinking he needed to file my 2024 tax return which wasn't what I asked for. He chooses to not take my 2nd call and emails me that he could longer work on my return because it's too complicated...and he tells me this 2 days before tax deadline, the 13th. He probably would not have emailed me if didn't reach out to him. The more I think about it, the more I realize he was just googling how to file an ITIN. Lack of communication, unreliable, still needs more experience.

Over those four years, I cycled through multiple accountants and always came out the other side feeling confused, second-guessing whether things were done right, and honestly more stressed than when I started. However, as we got closer to April 15 I got minimal communications from him. Then on 8pm on Tax Filing day itself, he texted that it would be late at night that he finished, then he texted saying he didn't finish and would file for an extension. Strike 1. Then I had to follow up April 20 since I hadn't heard anything and then over the next 2-3 weeks it was back and forth of reviewing his draft submissions and there was constantly inaccurate information, missing information, and overall poor attention to detail (he even missed including my 3 children as dependents). I was QCing accounting mistakes of my own CPA! Strike 2. I had to keep revising his drafts because his initially had us owing over 5-figures which was more than last year. I had to remind him then of how to approach the tax strategies that our family put in place. What I am even paying you for?! Strike 3. Then I had to still follow up with him when the final submission was going to be submitted (over a month late) and only then did he actual submit it, but I never even got a copy of the submitted paperwork (still waiting for it). Strike 4/5/6/ Needs to be thrown out of the game. I don't recommend at all and it's unfortunate since he seemed to do well with others, but not with us. Maybe he couldn't handle the complexity of our W2s and investments but never will I work with him again.

My husband is a musician who does lots of gig/freelance work and we wanted to get professional eyes on our taxes as our situation has become more complex. We had an intro call with Sandy who assured us she could help with our situation. We then decided to take the next step and provided all of our documents within their portal on March 3rd. After submitting we heard nothing back from them for weeks and so we called towards the end of the month to check in. When we did this they only then started asking us for additional documents and wanted us to reformat all profits and losses within their specific document formats despite us already providing these 4 weeks prior in our own format. We asked them if they could just use our existing documents and they said that would be an additional bookkeeper service of $300. At this point we were very frustrated that they took an entire month to tell us all of this after we submitted initial documents. We ended up filing with an alternative.
