Updated as of March 17, 2026 After giving this company the opportunity to address my concerns, I was left more disappointed by the response than the original experience. The wall button failed after only one year. While this was acknowledged, it was attributed to the manufacturer(defective button), and no replacement or meaningful resolution was offered. That approach made it unclear what accountability customers can expect when a product fails so quickly. The response primarily addressed communication issues, but did not meaningfully address the other concerns. It also emphasized that the garage door is now operational, which, while expected, does not reflect the overall experience. There were multiple scheduling issues, poor communication, an unreturned call, an unclear diagnostic charge, and a two-week delay in receiving a receipt after I requested it. It was also not addressed that at no point--either during installation or the recent service--was an extended warranty offered or discussed, which would have been important given the circumstances. Getting it working is the baseline--how issues are handled is what matters most. Original posted March 4, 2026 Our garage door button stopped working EXACTLY one year after installation. Our original button(when we moved in our house)lasted over 10 years -- this replacement barely lasted one year. Scheduling was a headache with multiple missed or shifted appointment windows. When the technician finally arrived, no diagnostic work was done, yet we were charged money for that service-- which we were later informed by staff that we shouldn't have been charged. After more calls and follow-ups, the owner eventually came out himself and replaced the button. The door now works, but communication about charges and refunds was unclear, and I had to request a receipt. What went well: * Owner eventually came out * Issue was fixed * Staff is polite and cordial * The button failed after only one year, indicating poor product quality * Multiple scheduling issues * Improper charge for diagnostic services * Poor communication and unclear warranty terms * An extended warranty was not offered or discussed at the time of installation last year, nor was one offered during service this year * I left a message on Saturday, 2/14/26, and my call was not returned * A receipt was not provided at the time services were rendered; I had to request one and did not receive it until two weeks later read more

It was 8 o'clock at night and I went out to get the garbage cans when the spring on the garage door snapped. I called the original installer of the door and of course got an answering machine. I left a message and called a friend for help the next day. They told me about Proper Garage Doors and said they were very good to them. So I called and Chris, the owner, answered the phone himself. After trying to negotiate a time for the next day and mentioning my wife is in the hospital. Chris said I can come out tonight for a small after hours charge, a very reasonable $50. From the time I called to the time, Chris left was less than an hour and a half. In today's world where can you get that kind of experience. Additionally, upon arrival Chris reviewed with me before he started the things he would be looking at and what what the cost might be. I figured I'd be paying for all of them, but when he was done, Chris said the other parts were fine and he didn't see a need to change them. Chris was super easy to work with and not only took a call well into the evening, but offered to have someone out the same night. The Lions were on and beating the Packers, so I waited for Doug to come out the next morning. One of my springs broke on my garage door and I called Proper Garage Door to see if they could replace both springs. Our garage door cable on one side broke due to age and corrosion, and our door was stuck halfway open and inoperable. I called and spoke with the owner, Chris, who was already on his way to another repair in our subdivision. When I told him what happened he was able to provide a quote and set up an appointment for house call. So, in about 12 minutes after I called, Chris arrived in the driveway ready to fix the issue. He had the parts, tools and knowledge to restore our garage door to full functioning and also inspected the second door for condition, and sprayed all the moving parts with the proper lubricant. I had a broken spring so I called the contractor (All-Star) that repaired the spring previously.They couldn't come out until 5 days later so I called Proper. They came out within about an hour of the phone call. Chris pointed out that the contractor who installed the broken spring installed a spring that was not designed for an insulated door, which I have. Chris installed the "Proper" heavy duty spring and replaced two broken hinges. The bottom panel of my door had a crack which caused it to bow. Chris also installed a strut which improved the performance of the door and will extend the life of the door. Chris gave us an honest and professional level of service that we appreciated. We will not hesitate to use him again. We highly recommend him. read more

What a horrendous experience. First, you know something is wrong when you have an experience like this, and the contractor has so many online 5-star reviews. Obviously, the contractor spends more time "cultivating" positive reviews than focusing on providing good service. Car dealerships do the same thing. Next, if you want a garage door/opener installed or repaired, beware. You most likely won't have any problem getting someone quickly out to your home, or with the price, but don't expect ever to be able to contact this contractor again, if something goes wrong. Three weeks after my garage door opener - which still worked, though imperfectly - was "fixed", it broke down completely. I tried to get in touch with the owner, "Chris", but he wouldn't respond - until I followed up and mentioned that I might post an online review about my experience. Then, it was: "Oh, we value as a customer", "we'll honor the service", though it's "probably just the life cycle" of the part. I tried to explain that the part wasn't evenly worn, and broke down only 3 weeks later, so it obviously was something not fixed "properly" - not that "just wore out". I told him I had diagnosed the problem, then ordered and paid for the replacement part. Again, he promised to come right out once the part arrived, but excused himself for responsibility, saying it was his newest repair technician, so he "wouldn't have known this was a possible cause." Lastly, I did let "Chris" know when the part arrived, and made myself available for him to come out, in the time frame he specified. That's the last I ever heard from him. Again, he didn't respond. Finally, I had to hire somebody else to fix the opener I had already paid him $100 to repair. All in all, I've spent 5 weeks now opening and closing my garage door, manually, this January and February - a winter that has been unusually cold, so far, and brought over 50" of snow. All because I hired "Proper Garage Doors" to repair my garage door opener. What a nightmare. If you need any further evidence of the shoddy nature of this contractor, take a look at the company's website - it looks like a cheap advertisement you might see on a cable channel at 3:00 am in the morning. And cheap advertisements are usually put out by shoddy contractors. Cheap contractors also don't care when something goes wrong with their work - especially, if they have already been paid. read more
