This is funny: in my quest for a proper burger, I came to eat at Proper Burger. What I found here is a pretty good burger, but not quite the proper burger I seek. I got (of course) the Proper Burger, and it is honestly a perfectly decent burger. Good sear, well dressed, on a soft yet capable bun. I had a little conflict with the artisinal lettuce, mine was more stems than greens, but I appreciate the intent of using something more interesting than iceberg. My side of onion rings was very nice, crispy batter outside, perfectly sweet and tender onion inside. I'd come back again just for that. Service was attentive and accurate. The dining room here is a rehabilitated automotive garage and still has the roller door ambiance. Enclosed and air conditioned, a little hipster-industrial vibe, but fun. I didn't visit the adjacent beer bar (Proper Brewing Co) which is the raison d'être for this burger joint. From what I hear it's worth the effort. Utah liquor laws are incredibly weird and we all suffer for it, but it does produce some really interesting workarounds. read more

Good burgers and good beer. I typically get a simple burger but I've had bites of others and they stand up to the high praise. The fries are always crispy and so are the onion rings. They serve them with proper sauce and it's definitely the way to go. They have tricia in Tuesdays and it's a great atmosphere and a lot of fun. What a fun, spontaneous way to spend a Saturday. We visited Proper Burger shortly after they opened and had a great time playing games, enjoying their brews and food. I've been to Proper many times but this is my first review. Service was fast. I got the Fiery Furnace with a chicken breast, a sandwich I have definitely had before. It was low on spice this time, but lots of blue cheese. We also got a side of fried which seems overcooked and too crispy. Or maybe they've changed their fries, I'm unsure. I got a dark lager special beer on tap which was delicious. The inside was full so we sat outside. It hadn't been cleaned anytime recently so the patio was dirty and no napkins on the table. I've been craving a burger and chose a bacon proper burger out of the many options in this local SLC joint. The staff were friendly and soda was self serve. It is split between two buildings, one where you can enjoy boozy drinks with or without food and the main building that is family friendly. Both sides are fairly spacious and one can easily enjoy a meal with friends. FYI- you need to order food in the main building regardless of your intentions. I had a business trip to SLC last weekend. On Friday night, I was watching Triple D reruns while packing for the trip and happen to see the episode that featured Proper Burger/ Proper Brewing. I took that as a sign that I needed to pay the place a visit during my trip. All in all, it was a good experience. The burger was the standout. I got the Sundance Kid Burger, their version of a BBQ burger. It was darn good. The patty was perfectly cooked, the combo of onion ring and crushed Fritos as toppings provided a nice crunch factor. The bun was really good. Toasted, pillowy and delicious. The fries didn't look as good as the ones featured on DDD. These didn't seem hand cut. They were remarkably similar to McDonald's fries in taste, size and texture. To me that was a bummer as I don't care too much for McD's fries. I prefer mine to be a bit thicker. Also, my order had lots of little nubs which are tough to dip. Also wanted to try a milkshake. It to was fine, but not exceptional. Just vanilla soft serve, chocolate syrup and some milk. In keeping with the fast food theme, the shake reminded me of a Wendy's Frosty. Not at all bad, just not worth seeking out. Their beers were very nice. This was supposed to be one of the better burger places in SLC, according to some local sources. Our experience here wasn't great. It's odd that you need to buy the burger in one place, then go eat it in the Proper Brewing place, but they explained it well. That's not the reason for the 2 stars as the staff was helpful when ordering. The burger was overcooked and dry! When you're supposed to be a burger place, this is really not acceptable. Since I already had walked over to get replacement fries because they were cold and lifeless, I didn't push my luck with the burger either. The toppings and ingredients were fresh and delicious though, and they were needed to help the burger along. Speaking of the fries, the second round was delicious and they were quick to come out too. The first batch tasted like they were the last of the previous bunch, which is always my pet peeve with fries. So many places give you crap-ass fries at first. Service was as good as it could be with counter service as they brought the food over from one building to another (again, dumb, but probably Utah's rules). Nobody was around to ask "how is everything?" though. So really couldn't let them know the burger patty sucked. TL:DR - Go to Crown Burger instead! read more

I usually create my own burger with beer cheese and bacon, but the show stopping element has to be their buns! Everything I've tasted here is full of flavor and comes at a super reasonable cost. Inside, you'll find a lively seating area with walk-up ordering, and for 21+ folks, you can bop right next door to the bar which has tons of arcade games, pool tables, craft beers and good vibes all around. Cool ambiance with really nice people working, trying to put a spin on everyday burgers. Unfortunately, the spins kind of missed the mark. The onion rings and fries, with their sauces, were amazing. I can't remember even having better. They tried to be quite creative with the burgers, but certain things are done for a reason. For example, the zucchini pickles did not taste good and didn't serve the function of a true pickle. Same for the spring mix they used instead of a straightforward iceberg or romaine. I would say 3.5 stars. My coworkers met up here for lunch one day. The parking lot situation alone would make me not return. There are just a few slots. The customer service wasn't amazing. It was not warm and friendly as I suppose I expected. There were only a few customers there on a Wednesday afternoon. I ordered the M.O.A.B burger and it was great actually. I would have appreciated more sauce, but they charge extra for sauces, so I went without. The fries were pretty good, but they were quite inconsistent, some were good, some were soggy, and some were really over cooked. Kind of a weird problem to have. Their special 'fry sauce' maybe they call it the proper sauce, wasn't really that special. It was okay, nothing memorable. The garlic aioli though that was on my burger was really good and I would consider ordering that as a dip for the fries. I agree with the review that stated the bun seemed like it might not hold up, there has got to be a better option out there. It was plenty to eat and filled me up! I could go elsewhere and get an equally good tasting burger that costs less! Proper Burger is hands-down one of my favorite spots in Salt Lake for a burger and a beer. The vibe is casual, fun, and always welcoming , perfect for grabbing food with friends or just grabbing a bit to eat My go-to order is actually the Chili Vegan Burger with the quinoa patty and I'm not even vegan or vegetarian! It's just that good. Super flavorful, hearty, and satisfying. But honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the burgers here. Everything tastes fresh and made with high quality ingredients. The bar area is also a great hangout. It's relaxed and lively, and it's always fun to grab a beer and play some games while you wait for your food or just kick back with friends. Fries are mediocre, frozen shoestring type. Meh. I love that they have me organic ketchup packets. Vegan shakes!! Yippee! These are super rare, so getting one was irresistible. The person at the counter couldn't tell me if it was a soy or coconut base. I ordered strawberry. It's a huge 22oz cup; a smaller size would be really nice. It was also really sweet, like strawberry syrup added and not real berries. Tasty enough but not the best vegan shake I've had. Would I go back again? Yes I would just to try all the different burgers they have to offer. All of their burgers sound pretty good and I was in town for a business trip. Service was quick and you order at the front desk then find a seat where they'll bring the food out to you (5mins later). They have both indoor and outdoor seating available as well. I ordered a hamburger (Johnny Utah) and I would probably give it a 3/5. Decent burger but I was hoping for more meat and cheese and it seemed like it was kinda lacking that which is why I'd love to try the other burgers. The rarebit fries were awesome and even better than the burger itself! You'll want a fork to dig in because it can get messy but my goodness I couldn't stop eating them. You walk in and the sign says go to the left and you wrap around to order your food. Then you need to walk back though the line to find a seat The burger is on a flour bun that is a little bit weak to hold up. The bun did hold together but I feel there's much better buns out there. The parking this limited but we were able to find a spot. Since I was with my daughter, mom, and auntie we entered at the restaurant side and not the bar. We had heard good things about Proper Burger so we decided to try it out. I was worried it would be hard to find a parking spot but it was fine. I think if we hadn't gone early it would might have been tricky. We wanted to get a shake or cones for our kids but the ice cream maker wasn't working or they needed to clean it. I was quite hungry and it did take a long time to get our food so that was not my favorite. I really enjoyed the cheeseburger! The meat tasted fresh and flavorful. And the buns were soft and yummy. Let's see location was easy to find and parking was available even though it's downtown which is hard to come by. Menu was easy to read. The wait was not to long to get food. The staff friendly and patient while ordering. The food was good I tried the plain Jane and added bacon and my party all tried different burgers we shared a basket of friend which can feed more than 2 people in my opinion. All in all taste was good the buns to the burger seemed fresh and hand made but I could be wrong. I think the next time I would alter my burger maybe add some things. It can be hard to find a kid friendly place to get a good beer and burger in Utah. Sadly breweries, which are generally very family friendly in other states, are pretty much off limits here. Happily, there is Proper Burger! We were able to enjoy good beer and yummy food while our toddler ran around the enclosed patio (there is a small open patio out front but a bigger, shaded, enclosed one out back). It was perfect, and since we were there early we had the patio to ourselves so she didn't bother anyone. We all liked our food - maybe not the most amazing hamburger of all time but very yummy. I wish the cheese had been melted more but otherwise I loved mine (I got it Proper Style). The zucchini pickles were fabulous! So happy that this worked out. We were able to enjoy patio dining on a nice evening with good drinks in a very kid friendly space. Best of both worlds! read more

So happy they are currently doing Curbside pickup! The ordering experience was super easy. You put your car info in when ordering online so when you get there they can easily bring it right out! Both burgers were ordered with the Veggie patty. Which is a black bean sweet potato patty. And let me tell you, this is one of my favorite veggie burgers ever. Soo good. So if you have followed our other reviews, you know we avoid chain restaurants whenever possible. We also like to check out any local spots which have been on guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Well, up popped Proper Burger, just 12 miles away and we had 90 minutes to kill before our room was ready. Totally worth it! I had the bacon and cheeseburger, with their fresh-cut fries and while my cardiologist may have questioned my decision, my stomach was totally on-board. My wife had equal praise for their mushroom burger and onion rings. I even tossed in a chocolate shake, because calories don't count during a road trip. The food here is unique.
