Had a really solid experience at HSL in Salt Lake City. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the vibe felt relaxed but still put together. Everything we tried was well executed and thoughtfully plated, and you can tell they care about quality ingredients. A couple small things kept it from being a full 5 stars (nothing major), but overall it's a great spot for a nice dinner or drinks if you're in the area. Would definitely come back and recommend it to friends. A bit on the pricey side but the food is great!

I loved this place and would absolutely come back! When I made the reservation, they asked if I was celebrating anything. I said my anniversary, and when we arrived, they had us seated in a fancy booth with a "happy anniversary" card signed by a bunch of the staff! The service was only up from there. Our server was awesome, at the end of the meal she even boxed up our leftovers for us and labeled each box with what it contained and the date. The food was great too! The flavors were not only unique and interesting, they worked well together and tasted great. The plating was also beautiful to look at. My favorite was the cauliflower, my husband's was the mushroom pasta. The drinks were similarly complex and tasty. The price was a little higher than other cheaper places but not by much and overall not bad at all, honestly less than I was expecting. We had 4 dishes and 2 cocktails for around $130. For the food and service, 100% worth the price.

This is such a cute place! Love the wall decor and dimmed lighting. The moment I stepped in, the staff in the front greeted me and had me wait on the side while I waited for my group. She brought out water for me, which was nice of her. Finally, our group was sat in the back with the round table. All of us ordered different types of entrees, but had the chance to try a little bit of each. I ordered the pork belly, and it was cooked right--tender, caramelized, juicy and savory. It balanced well with the grits and it was the last item left before they ran out, so I made the right choice. Their caramel pudding is seriously so good. I kept swirling my spoon around in the glass jar hoping there was more, lol. I'm not even a big sweet tooth person, too, so it was that good! Their staffs are all helpful, attentive and friendly. We even met the head chef there, who was hospitable when he greeted our table. I found parking in the streets after making a loop around the block once. Finding one can be challenging and I don't recall if there's a parking structure or lot nearby as I'm still new to the area. Overall, I'd come back to try other items that were unavailable that night as they ran out.

My cute Valentine took me to HSL to enjoy their special Valentines menu. I have tried Handels in Park City, but had yet to try the HSL version, so I was stoked! First off, the menus and Valentines vibe were so cute! Lots of pink, hearts and the workers all dressed up, so cute! We got the carrots to start, which our server said is one of his favorites, and I don't know how you can make carrots taste so amazing, but they did! Such great flavor. I also got the mushroom bolognese and my boyfriend got the pork belly. We both loved our meals and it was the perfect serving amount. Only negative was it was lowkey expensive, but we had expected that. Great service, vibe and food! So glad I got to try!

Average, considering the price. Ambiance: Beautiful on the inside with bar seating and plenty of tables. Definitely more upscale and good for a date night. Service: Always on top of things with great explanations of everything. Food: We ended up getting the biscuit, winter salad, pork belly, steak, and two drinks. The flavor of the biscuit was good but the biscuit itself was very dry. The winter salad was nice and light. The pork belly was flavorful but portions were small considering the price. The steak was average although I thought the brussel sprouts had a nice texture and char. The two drinks (one with alcohol and one without) were delicious. Overall, drinks were great but food was just okay. I was expecting more considering the reviews and price point.

This place is exactly the kind of place you want close to you. With a menu that changes regularly, you always want to come to try the latest. It's a place that just works for a casual work dinner or an intimate date night. From the moment we walked in, the service struck a perfect balance, pleasant and attentive without being overbearing. Every staff member, from the host to the server and those bringing out the food, was consistently on point. Drinks are fantastic. I don't think you can go wrong. Some fun mock-tails for dry January as well. And every time I come here I'm impressed at the bartenders for their attention to detail and the hand carving of the ice. As for the food, let's start with the appetizers. The winter salad was a standout. The maple vinaigrette brought just the right amount of sweetness, complemented by the crunch of pomegranate seeds and nuts. And the biscuit--oh, the biscuit! It's everything I dream of when I think "biscuit place." Lightly salty with a flaky crust, it sat atop a pool of perfectly balanced local honey. I could eat one of these every week and never tire of it. For the main course, we tried the gnocchi and the fried chicken. The gnocchi, unfortunately, I wouldn't order it again. But the fried chicken? A winner. It was crispy, flavorful, and paired beautifully with creamy mac and cheese and tangy collard greens that would have made my southern ancestors beam with pride. This spot has an easy charm that keeps drawing me back, and after this meal, I'm already planning my next visit, if only for that biscuit!

Pork belly small plate was amazing. Pork shank and steak both very good. Pork shank literally fell off the bone. Good drink selection. Was a little disappointed in the sushi cold plate. Very little tuna. Presentation is very good. Had to wait a little too long for my waiter to come back for bar refills.

I have been to Handle in Park City and loved it, so I was super excited to see they had an extension in Salt Lake. The vibe in here is so cool. I would normally get a Diet Coke, but I ended up trying the lemonade since they only offer bottled soda, which I don't like. The lemonade was really good! It was carbonated and had the perfect combo of tart and sweet. My husband and I split the buttermilk biscuit and carrots to start. My husband and I agreed it was the best biscuit we've ever had. It had the perfect amount of cinnamon, and the honey on the plate was so yummy. The carrots were pretty good but I would've preferred they be a bit crispier. I had the sourdough toast as an entree. I loved the bread, burrata, and heirloom tomatoes. My husband got the steak. He ordered it medium rare, and it did come out a little bit on the rarer side, but it was still good. The potatoes and sauce, avocado soubise, that came with the steak were the real stars for me tonight. Absolutely incredible. We had the passionfruit sorbet and the chocolate torte for dessert. They were both good. The flavors are combined so thoughtfully in all the dishes, and everything from the drinks to the food was a flavorful experience for the taste buds. The service was a little bit on the slower side, but we weren't in a rush so we just enjoyed our time and savored the experience. I would recommend looking over the menu before going because there might not be something for everyone here. The prices are on the more expensive side, but the food is delicious!

Awesome service and cocktails. We had the HSL burger and the pizza, Manhattan, Daiquiri, and Tres Leches. All was perfect.

This was a great experience for my wife and me. We really enjoyed our pork belly, burger, steak, and whiskey pudding. The inside is very nice with comfy chairs and low lighting for ambiance. Our waiter was very helpful and always checked up on us, filled our water, and gave great recommendations. Not to mention, this place is far enough from downtown to have a good amount of parking options. We'll definitely be coming back!

Objectively this is a well run restaurant. But the food left something to be desired. All of it was a little salty and felt like it was made more for a picture rather than our tastebuds. We really wanted to like this place but neither me or my partner enjoyed our meals. However we'd be willing to give their sister location because we've heard it was good. Overall, it was pretty expensive, the total for three dishes (1 app and 2 entrees) was a little over a $100 which given our level of enjoyment, wasn't worth it. The host and waitress were absolutely wonderful though. And the ambiance was so wonderful.

Called in to make a reservation for a large party and it was easy, just gotta put. Csrd down to hold the reservation. You get a reminder text the day before and to confirm your res. On the day of, we were seated pretty immediately on arrival. The waiter was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations for drinks. The drinks were excellent! Onto the food. We ordered a bunch of apps for the table to share and they were all very good. Highlights were the general tso cauliflower and biscuit! But all the apps were great. I got the fish of the day and it was a scottish salmon dish. It was so buttery and fatty it just melted in my mouth. And the crispy skin was magical. The sauce realky tied everything together. The veggies it came with were just ok. But overall a great dish. To finish off the meal, we had some people order dessert. But I saw they had green chartreuse on the menu so I had to order it! Chartreuse has been very elusive lately so I couldnt resist! Overall a great place for a big or small group dinner! Would 100% come back on my next slc visit!

They source most of their ingredients locally and approach preparation with creativity and a real mindfulness about waste. You can taste that intention in every dish. You absolutely have to try the milk-braised potato. It's one of those rare dishes that surprises you with how deeply satisfying it is: simple in concept, executed perfectly, and completely memorable. The chicken pot pie is another standout. A beautifully roasted drumstick crowns the pastry; you lift it out to let the pie cool (and you'll need to because it arrives piping hot). Upon entering, the evening seemed promising. The ambiance was moody and intimate, the host was astute and welcoming, and the tile work was beautiful. As the night wore on, however, things slowly stopped adding up to a delicious dining experience. The first thing was the waitress. Apparently the host was also the waitress... and the bartender... and the busser - not that you would know it because of how attentive she was, but shortly after getting our small plates I mentioned to my cousin that I hadn't seen any other person working in the restaurant. While I knew that couldn't be true, I was facing into the restaurant and I only ever saw two other men casually saunter out from the kitchen, look around, and saunter back. No one looked excited to be working there, but the two men who appeared from the kitchen gave me no sense of urgency or purpose, only just that they were extremely bored. The second thing that didn't add up was the Farm to Table narrative. As our Swiss Army Server (thanks for that one, Dimitri) was opening up our wine and recommending dishes, I asked where the farm was located. Apparently, the farm is located in California, and this "farm" owns several other "Farm to Table" restaurants... hmmm... When it came to ordering, we were instructed to order all of our dishes upfront, but that they would come out in courses... While things rolled out like that, the way we were required to order and the way our food came out gave the distinct impression that they weren't dishes being made to order - only delivered to the table in such a way as to give the illusion that they were. Dishes you would expect to come out hot came out room temperature. Dishes you would expect to come out chilled came out room temperature. When each course came out they came out one dish at a time, but one immediately after another... almost like they had been sitting on a table in the kitchen just waiting for anyone to order them. The final, and perhaps most telling thing that didn't add up, was the distinct lack of any smell coming from the kitchen - let alone the restaurant. Only after we left the establishment did we realize how fresh and clean the air smelled. As a home chef, I understand that not every dish calls for garlic and onion, but what about salt? What about pepper? What about any kind of butter or seasoning or even a maillard reaction? In this day and age of salted dark chocolate caramels and umami, attempting any dish completely void of salt is a brave choice, but it's certainly not a heroic one. I mean, we're talking about a restaurant that cooks and serves a filleted trout with its head still attached, eyes buggin' out, bones in, the works! How are we not smelling the fish when it hits the table‽ Have you ever plugged your nose while you tasted something?... Exactly... To finally wrap this review up - the reason why I'm giving this experience 1 star is because the service was attentive, the beet salad was good, and the rest made us laugh uncontrollably at how bad it was. The potato pave was a fun gimmick, and the brussel sprouts were crispy but the pork tenderloin and the fish had no smell, no recordable temperature, and the only flavor I could identify was... dusty dirty mop water? I just don't know... we even tried to load up bites of pork and fish with the polenta, the sautéd and pickled greens, and the "sauces", but nothing helped... if anything, it made things taste worse... truly, I've never been closer to becoming a vegan. People will say we should've just sent back the food, but I've worked in food and bar service. How does requiring that level of service from your waitress for your patrons even begin to make up for a business model whose only job is to make food taste good? After all, I can get that level of service from McDonalds, even though I've never had an experience that required it from them... If you do decide to go to Roux for your next meal, maybe make it breakfast... from my experience, breakfast is a hard meal to mess up.
