I was in Florida, visiting a friend, and talked her into making the 2 hour trip to Four Purls. Walking in, I was amazed! The place really is HUGE - the largest yarn shop I'v ever been in. The owners were really nice, explaining how the store in laid out with regard to the yarn weights. I asked about Cashmere yarn; they had it. Yak yarn; they had it. Yarns from countries that I didn't know produced yarns - Japan. They have their own private label yarn as well. This is a destination store if you're anywhere in Florida. If you use yarn in any way, you will love this place. I told my friend I'll be back to visit, if only to go back to Four Purls.

Every city I go to, I have to check out the yarn store. I went to Winter Haven eight years ago, but…read moredidn't know about Four Purls back then. I had no reasons to visit Winter Haven (nothing there), but I found myself on the way from Tampa to Orlando on a Sunday so I stopped in. It's rare for a LYS to be open seven days a week - but they are so that was a definite plus. There's a decent amount of free parking on the street and in a nearby small lot. The store has a great selection, although I found it to be eaten up by a ton of Emma's yarns (local, but having one wall of it takes away from other yarns they could stock in my opinion). For example, I wish they stocked Cascade 220 since no stores nearby stock it. Although there is a yarn for everyone, and a few interesting finds (Biscotti self-striping, multicolored roving, art yarns, crochet animal kits). I met Noelle, and she was very sweet in helping me out, and showed me around the shop since it was my first time there. Overall, there's a good range of yarns organized by weight (my preferred layout for a LYS), and is definitely one of the top yarn stores I've been to in the Southeast.

She even chilled our wine, provided cups and allowed an additional member of our party to create a project at the last minute even though she never registered beforehand. If you're looking for a girls night activity, bday celebration, cute date night, or just something different than movies or bowling, THIS is your place! The inside is beautifully decorated and any craft you make is like Pier 1/Home Goods level nice. So the added bonus of having a great time is that you leave with a gorgeous piece to show off. Make sure you get a punch card on your way out for their loyalty program so you can eventually get a free workshop.

The staff were attentive and friendly, walking around to each table to check on each person and guide them along the process. The work areas were large and it was nice sound with others to guide and help each other also. There really wasn't an overall explanation on how to do the monogram on the box so we struggled with this until a staff member came by and guided us on the process but by then all but 1 monogram was on a box. Wish there would have been just a bit more overall instructions on this is how we put on and take off the monogram. Overall the experience was lovely and I think everyone really enjoyed it. Great place to have a party or come take part in a workshop.

However my two star take away is from the fact that I went on my birthday and arrived between 1:30-2pm. Shortly after arriving and being told to pick our pottery (as many studios have different processes) we waited for further instructions but a party came in and we had to just wait around until they were taken care of(which I will get to why became a problem) Finally a different worker helped us out (she was lovely! Very sweet and bubbly. She had candy cane Christmas nails) So we began to paint, I saw others come in too. At around 3pm we're told they're closing early at 3:30 for a private event so we can wrap up our paint job or take it home and come back. We had been waiting to start because of another party which isn't our fault and took away from our time only to be kicked out early. My issues is 1. Why were we not told the moment we came in they were closing at 3:30 instead of 6pm that Sunday? Why was it not written on the chalk board outside? Seems like a way to just still make money because now people have started the pottery of course they have to come back and finish it and pay you. 2. We don't have family or friends here in FL. My. Family lives across the US, we only were able to go for my birthday because a friend happened to come to town that weekend and offered to watch our kids. So when will I be back to finish this piece of pottery? GOD KNOWS WHEN. We timed it perfectly for ourselves and frankly had we known they were closing in 2 hours or less we would have just left. Also I get that you're renting out for private parties but again not notifying others (even the people that came in probably 30 mins before you planned to close!) is annoying. It was my birthday too, the only thing I cared to do that day and I had to leave, no matter how I scheduled my day around that time frame and even though I wasn't finished. It just gives money hungry vibes to not notify people before allowing them to start.

The Caladium Arts and Crafts Co-Op is a non profit that was created in 1992 by three Lake Placid Artists: Carol Mills, Harriet Porter, and Suellen Robinson. The ladies wanted to create a place for local artists and crafters to display and market their creations to the public. The store is like Etsy shop that you can walk around in person. Artists join the co-op so they can sell their creations. There are approximately 50 artists selling painted furniture, crochet blankets, tote bags, wreaths, trinket boxes, tea towels, note cards, jewelry, aprons, glasses, holiday decorations, faux floral arrangements, Christmas ornaments, art work for the wall, and more. I especially loved the delicate caladium earrings which were perfect for the festival. Everyone who was working was so kind and warm to me and the prices were more than fair for such skilled handiwork in the mediums of wood, textiles, glass, canvas, and metal. In addition to selling the work of artists, the co-op also has a room in the back that offers a variety of classes. You can view the current offerings on Facebook. A recent project was a rope bowl. If I lived locally I would be a regular visitor to this inspirational and welcoming space.
