One of the best aspects of this bar are the three sizes of pours available for most beers on tap - a taste (4 oz), a half (8 oz), and a full (14 oz). All are fairly priced, and for the curious beer drinker like me, this allows me to try several beers per visit. At most places I would have to order a flight of three to four beers in order to earn that luxury, but not here! The space is fairly narrow, so when it gets busy here I imagine it can get quite loud and tight on space. I'm a longtime fan of Proletariat. It's a snobby beer bar but in the best possible way. They have a rotating beer menu thats always interesting, the bartenders are enthusiastic and eager to tell you all about it, the prices are fair if not occasionally low for New York and the place itself is usually chill if not a little cramped. The biggest downside is that you typically can't come back and get the same beer twice, but that's also kind of its charm. Makes you appreciate the beer more. Live in the moment. Savor every sip. Rethink your life and decisions. Have you been feeling disconnected from yourself lately? Are you surprised when you look in the mirror and see an unfamiliar face staring back at you? It's called Proletariat, has a so-called "Marxist" vibe with communist propaganda displayed, and yet they serve these bourgeois little craft $8-10 HALF pints in a wine glass. If the people who run and frequent such a place give even half a toss about class consciousness they wouldn't be caught inside. No, instead you'll find some of the most poignantly hypocritical examples of the regressive left. In some ways, I am just hoping that this is a veiled joke and biting critique of Marxism (evoking the privileges enjoyed by those party leaders in countless historical examples), but if they were going for something that high brow, it should have been better presented. Proletariat is probably the best beer bar in the city from a curation standpoint. Lets start with that. Most other beer bars--especially in Manhattan--try to focus on quantity more than anything else. But when you're basically getting the same shit at all of these different places with little variation, who cares? That's why Proletariat selects its 12 draft beers and small list of bottles so carefully, and takes care of them so well. Tucked in a narrow, dark dive bar space on St. Marks, it's all about the quality of the options. I've been in the craft beer scene for several years now, and let me tell you: there's always something worth trying at Proletariat. The bartenders in general are extremely knowledgeable (with one possible exception below) and take very good care of the beer, keeping the tap lines clean and serving beer in the correct glass. One thing that I really like it that they serve full and half glasses of the beers on tap. While you can always ask for a sample anyway, this also enables you to try more of the options they have available. The small space packs out quickly with an array of yuppies, craft beer nerds, and girls who boyfriends hate them and thus dragged them to a beer bar. My advice is to get here early so you can either carve out space at the bar, or grab the lone table in the front. Either way, if you want to enjoy craft beer in NYC it doesn't get much better than this. I can't give them 5 stars because of 1 incident alone. One night , I came with a friend who was new to craft beer, and who wanted something on the lighter side. Rather than ask my opinion, he asked the bartender. Big mistake. For some God-forsaken reason, the bartender recommended Founders Bolt Cutter. As you may be able to tell from the name, that this not a light beer at all; in fact, it is really heavy and strong even for my tastes (15% ABV). I of course found this hilarious and let it happen (yes, I know I am a dick). My friend took 1 sip and started screaming that we were trying to kill him. He ended up finishing it like a man but that set the tone for the night and he's never let me live it down. "Rare, new, and unusual beer" is right. Proletariat is the speakeasy of the most uncommon beers. All craft, unusual, rare, new, seasonal, bottled and on tap. Some names will, I hope, resonate familiar such as Allagash, Victory, and Ballast Point, but don't expect the expected, common brews. The menu changes daily, so you're bound to discover something new. An extremely dim lit space which is rather small and expectedly packed, busy at the bar throughout almost all hours of the night. A long wall of framed tattoo illustrations faces the bar. This is the second best bar I've encountered in terms of rare beer selection. You certainly won't find another bar like this in the East Village. Can't say there is any reason for disappointment with Proletariat if you are true beer nerd, unless you absolutely loathe a good quality beer. I've inquired the bartender for recommendations. They are extremely knowledgeable and will let you sample beforehand. All this wonderful beer comes with a price, however. Can't complain about higher ABV though, and all is well worth it. They pour and serve in proper glasses, which is nice. Last, I had a dark stout, the Allagash Red Howes ($10) from a Teku glass and a Belgian style ale, of which I apologetically don't recall the name. I personally love Allgash and this was a complete contrast to what I've had before. With a dark medium body, roasted malt taste, aroma of coffee with cranberry notes in flavor. I'm not the biggest fan or advocate of dark ales, but I have to say this was a great drink. The Belgian style ale was equally excellent, but of course, much lighter, not too hoppy and with a nice finish of apricot notes. Proletariat's layout and lack of seating may be the drawback, but it's inevitable for a small space. I've arrived after 8PM, and by that time, the bar remains fully occupied. We've managed to score seating at the very front by the window, which is actually more quiet and better for conversation. Overall, Proletariat has a lot to offer: awesome uncommon beers, knowledgeable bartenders, and cool, low-key ambiance. These should give enough reasons to love and want to come back. read more

When I was here last evening for a nightcap I asked the bartender Corey what he would suggest for my palate as I was in the mood for an amber to darker beer. He came up with a terrific choice - Perfect Crime "Hollow Point" - which was a Belgium style beer. At $10 this was a nice beer to sip and end my long evening of debauchery. A generous pour too. Seemed like they have a small but eclectic selection of about a dozen craft type beers on tap in the $5 - $12 range. Also a terrific amount of bottles that are priced higher but in larger pour sizes. Definitely paying for the quality as there are a lot of hard to discover wonderful brews here. Bocks, Stouts, Oktoberfests, Framboise, Porters, Ales, you name it. Perfect place to cap off an evening in a quiet relaxed atmosphere during the week. Best bet is to just tell the bartender what style of beer you like and they will come up with a proper brew. Most of the beers here are rare and almost all are unusual; I never have a problem finding something special that I just have to try. The bartenders are also very helpful with recommendations. Most of the drafts can be poured as 14 or 8 ounces but last night I noticed that some come in 4 ounce pours as well. Love the dark and cozy decor, though it is a small and narrow space. When it gets packed there's not much room for moving around but there are one or two small areas that will fit about four people or so and the bar is lined with stools. If being in a small, crowded area isn't your thing just come earlier or towards the end of the night. Definitely worth working into your bar rotation if you enjoy craft beer. read more

The bottles get very expensive very quickly, so I suggest you stick with the fascinating rotation of drafts, which I guarantee is the most unique in the city right now. They seem to have a thing for old-world beer-makers' new-world wines, with a nice selection of limited release seasonals from the likes of Allagash, Ommegang, and Victory. This is a great place to discover sour Belgians and fruit-forward European styles like Berliner Wisse, Gose, and...LoverBeer [???]. Very good beer, but they have a new policy where you cannot try a taste of a beer. You must "commit" to at least a small pour sight unseen. This goes against the spirit of what a beer bar should be , as well as being ill-considered given the esoteric nature of the beers on offer. This was one of the most enjoyable bars I've been to in NY. Definitely the ultimate beer geek bar, and can see how it can be intimidating to those that may not have very little beer knowledge. I was definitely impressed with the selection, especially since there was several beers they had on tap I wasn't familiar with (and I consider myself quite the beer buff). My friend and I had a great time drinking some great brew and talking beer with Anthony. Yelp does it again. This time, a friend of mine did the Yelping and located this spot, main criteria being "well-rated bar within 5 blocks of Momofuku because we don't want to go far." Boom, Proletariat. 1 - I like the name. 2 - I was amazed that of the numerous beers listed on the board (adorably in letter/number magnets) I recognized only one! Rare beers, indeed. 3 - This selfsame beer board also has the instructions, "trust the bartender." So I gave the fellow two criteria - not hoppy, not sweet - and he followed up with one question - do I like sour? - and presto, an amazing beer that he let me try first without my having to ask! The beer in question was the Brett Peat Daydream, which I've absolutely never heard of, tastes smoky and peaty and sour and deliciously complex. Half of my friends thought it was awful, the other half kind of gave me a "wow, nice!" What a treat. Seating is limited and my group of six was lucky to find a table. However, as the place became more packed (approaching 11 pm) a big, loud group of dudes celebrating a birthday made no secret that they wanted our space. Once we started winding scarves around our necks, they descended like hawks. Is this typical clientele? Perhaps getting there early is the way to go. read more

I have to give it to this place, it really has one heck of a beer selection. I've now been here twice, once with 2 friends after stopping at many east village locales, and we thoroughly enjoyed it here. Although we knew about 2 of the beers on tap, and a few more bottles, we all went, ok, wow, this is fantastic. Every beer we tasted was good, if not great (all pending taste buds and preference). The thing is that the beers change so often, which, isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you like a beer, write it down, you probably won't ever see it again. Again, the guy(s) behind the bar are fantastic, friendly, and knowledgable. It is a very small place, barely enough room to walk behind the people sitting on a stool. A cool bar, albeit quite pricey, especially for an out-of-towner used to $4.50 pints of the good stuff during peak hours (Albuquerque life). Still, you have to commend the folks here for their assemblage of beers, the beer knowledge exhibited by the bartender, and the fact that you may just walking away, like I did, in awe at the beer(s) you just had. For me, it was the bottle of Pannepot Reserva I had. Though I consider myself a bit of a beer geek, I was unfamiliar with this particular brand and beer ans was a bit nervous about paying the $15 the twelve ounces was going to cost me. Thanfkully, there was a special going on giving 30% off until 8PM, so this made the price much more palatable. The beer was mind-blowing. A Belgian aged for 5 years in white oak barrels, the complexity of flavors really astonished me. Different fruit hints, oakiness, some smoke, some chocolate, all dancing around different parts of my palate. It was a true pleasure drinking this beer. Having said this, I'm not sure anyone else will find this beer there on future visits, but I'm confident they'll find something similar and similarly obscure. When in New York, we had to go here a few times, as this was walking distance from Anna P.'s lovely casa-- talk about perfection. The ambiance here is utterly perfect. Dim lighting in a really small & narrow space, that results in an extremely cozy setting. They also have the coolest beer glasses I have ever seen (called Tekus), and display their 'rare and unusual' beers with those cute plastic magnetic alphabet letters. You can get different sized pours as well, which is always a plus in my book. The bartenders are very knowledgeable, friendly, and on the last time, even let us sneak in one last round before close. I am shocked I haven't reviewed this place yet. This is the best beer bar in NYC in my opinion. I always stop by if I am in the neighborhood just because every experience is different. They rotate their taps with beers from all over the world every single day. You will NEVER find the same beer again so you basically have to try them all every time you go (just kidding). The bar tenders all know their beer and usually have great taste and know how to figure out something that will satisfy your palette. The location is great since you can put your name down at a lot of the East Village restaurants and come here and grab a beer or two. Personal pro tip is to come earlier or later in the night because this place becomes packed and you can barely moved. read more

Maybe I was unlucky in coming here on a Halloween night as part of a pub crawl? I tried two beers that night. One was the Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale. The other was an unknown beer that I won as a result of a challenge. Unfortunately, both were the victim of bad pours. I got maybe around 30-40% head and tasted all kinds of hops - was not a fan. But you say, "Judy, how could you not know that the Smuttynose Pumpkin was less aromatic than most, with more noticeable hops? It's all over their website and any beer nerd would have known!" Well, I apologize for not being well read and in-the-know about craft beers. Shouldn't I expect the bartender to educate me? When I was trying to choose a beer, I was talking to the bartender about something that's spiced and tasted like fall but wasn't too bitter. She suggested the Smuttynose... and I was thoroughly disappointed by the recommendation. Again, maybe it was because they were so busy on Halloween and she didn't really hear me but rather just listened to me. But when I go to a craft beer bar, I expect that the bartenders would be good at catering to the descriptions of my preference. And I was throughly disappointed. Maybe it's just me. But I tend to like a quieter, tap room sort of feel with my bars. And this place is definitely a tad on the hipster side of things. There's alternative music playing. People are generally really loud. Not a huge fan of the vibe. I also tend to like menus that are smaller with more apt descriptions and more hand picked. I did hear great things about this place and I do know it comes from the creators of Death and Company, which I like. So I might be willing to give it another try. Hmmm. I love a good craft beer, but somehow wasn't feeling this place too much. Its really narrow, with the bar counter taking up most of the space. Theres a smaller counter that you can lean on behind it, but you're probably just going to get in the way of other customers. This is a neat little bar tucked away in East Village. It boasts are a solid selection of craft beers with about a dozen offerings on draft. Unfortunately, they do not offer free samples, but the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and are able to provide a good idea of what each beer is like. The bar is pretty narrow as it's only as wide as a hallway. The bathroom is small and lit by a red light; its wallpaper is people's tattooed bodies. I think I have a new favorite beer - try the Nogne O Imperial Rye Porter. It has a rich body, goes down smooth and reminded me of a light imperial stout. Only stopped in for a drink since we had dinner plans in the area. I'd heard amazing things about this place, so I was adamant about stopping by. It's a narrow but long place (with a deceptively large mirror in the back). There are tattoo flash sheets framed on the wall. Their beer menu is made of refrigerator magnets. There was great post-rock instrumental music playing from a MacBook. And the bartender was very generous with beer samples, and overall a funny and friendly guy. Will definitely be back. It doesn't have the biggest selection of beer in NYC; there's only 12 taps (with 36 brews on the bottle list). It doesn't have a TV (although for me that's an atmosphere enhancer). It's intimate to the point of cramped. So what makes Proletariat so great? As a craft beer geek, for my money it has the best curated selection of craft beer in Manhattan. Proletariat's tag line is "rare, new and unusual beer", and it lives up to this promise every time. I love the fact that I will have never heard of half the beers on the list - and the way the barman is happy to explain them to you. There's a lot of love goes into the beer selection here, and it shines through. The prices are definitely reasonable considering how rare most of the beers are and what they retail for. The ambiance is cool without trying too hard: there's tattoo art on the wall, 90's rock, soul, and quality indie on the playlist, low lighting, and friendly, extremely knowledgeable service. Proleteriat is the bro whisperer. I have had no less than three casual meetups with beer-loving boys here that have turned into deep-talking-but-not-dates here since I've moved to East Village. I'm not sure what it is-- the cozy seating? the intimate yet distinctly male atmosphere? the high ABV beers?-- but I'll take it. I've showed up at near-prime time (9 pm on a Thursday, 8 pm on a Friday) and it's been anywhere from halfway full to just a few stools left. The volume can get loud, but it's never deafening. The decor falls between industrial and old-timey but definitely sexy with the low lighting. The bartenders are helpful and a little jokey. There's a list by the door, as well as a less-descriptive fridge magnet menu above the bar. It's a short beer list, with maybe ten beers and most major categories represented (pilsners, IPAs, stouts, and maybe something you haven't heard of). All from microbreweries and often local. They have everything available in half pints in the $6ish range while 8 ounce pints can run $11+. Make sure that whoever you bring actually likes weird beer, because the brews are often funky. I say that as someone who drinks saisons, goses, and sours half of the time (the other half is tripels, because if beer is so high calorie you might as well get drunk faster). I haven't loved everything I've had, but it's definitely been a departure from the norm. Their picks tend towards the extreme of their categories. You should definitely chat up your bartender if you'd like to be more sure of your selection. It's an enjoyable place to linger over a craft beer in a corner and watch as your newly-comfortable male friend suddenly opens up about his feelings. Really great EV beer spot for anyone who likes craft beer and wants to get something different. Their beer selection list is long and the staff is highly knowledgeable. My only gripe is it's a bit expensive for beer but you are getting high quality. read more

I love all the overthrow hospitality restaurants and I've loved every single thing I've ever eaten at any of them. And now I can add proletariat to the list. my husband loves craft beer. And I'm vegan. This place is a dream come true! The food is amazing, like high end bar food but 10000 times better. Highly recommend. read more
