I was more than satisfied with their explanation and eagerness to earn my business and trust. I've taken them up on the offer to work with them so have updated the review initially and provide a final review once completed. ______________________________ Let me say the reason I reached out to Capitol CPA is because of their excellent reviews and they were my first pick. However, it's difficult to go with a company or trust them with your taxes when they can't even respond to you in a timely manner or at all. Let me detail my experience below: December 16, 2019: Send an inquiry through their website asking about availability for new clients. Receive a response from Steven that they're currently evaluating their capacity and will get back to me in a week. I respond immediately asking if I should follow up in a week or if they'll let me know? *CRICKETS* December 26, 2019: Ask for an update. Hear nothing, follow up with an inquiry through their website December 31, 2019: Receive a response from Steven apologizing for letting this slip through the cracks. They have room for new clients and ask for information. I respond an hour later with the information. *CRICKETS* January 19, 2019: Another follow up. Ask for an update. *CRICKETS* January 31, 2019: I give up. I reached out to three other companies and they immediately responded, asked for my tax information which I provided, and... immediately responded. So thank you Capitol CPA for wasting my time.

However this past year he dodged my emails/phone calls, my husband's emails/phone calls, and my elderly mother's emails/phone calls (we all file separately). He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. I don't know what is going on and while I wish Steven no ill will, please do not work with this firm or him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

I met with Poonam Bansal, ,who I believe is the owner. We spoke over the phone and I explained that I needed my personal income taxes completed for 2011. She quoted me a decent price and was very personable, so I went to visit her. She was really thorough and patient in explaining all my forms and what I needed to get to her. When I got back, I sent most of my stuff to her via email and in a few days, she had completed my taxes. I'm unsure if I would have gotten the same amount back if I did this on my own, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised to see my return. Just the ease of giving your taxes to someone and having it completed so quickly is a nice feeling. I will most likely use her again. Just note that she seems to be getting busy as she said she's working every weekend until 9pm, so I would assume that the closer it gets to Tax Day, the harder it will be to employ her services.

I called in in need of my payroll taxes reduced as I knew I was paying too much per paycheck. I was booked for an appointment super quick., Madina realized I'm in Maryland and opted to do a virtual meeting. She actually gave me a great discount and the price was way below what I thought I would pay. They advised it would be $55 for 15 mins. They stuck to exactly what they promised. In addition, I had quite a few follow-up questions and some adjustments had to be made after my initial virtual meeting. They didn't inconvenience me by making me meet again, Madina got things taken care of and only called me to advise that my questions were resolved. She offered to meet again for free if I wanted to speak to the CPA again. I was not ever charged for additional work or time to re-review the questions I had. They fixed every single concern/issue. My payroll taxes are now reduced. I'm thrilled and grateful for the outcome of using this CPA company. The best part, Madina did it with the most gracious and kind attitude. During my first appointment with Make my Day I was met initially with an the CPA's assistant who…read moretook all my forms (which they had asked for) and talked to me for some time. This was weird because over the phone the appointment was said to be made with the CPA herself. So just be sure when you make an appointment that you know who it's with and what will occur. The assistant after looking at all my tax papers gave me a quote for $350- 375, then a quote for $450- 475, then a quote for $550- 575, then was told that I would you would need to charge by the hour to look at one thing. I'm a small business owner, and they advertise specializing in small bushiness, so I'm not really understanding that why I would need to pay her to research something like that. For each increase in price I was told that it was because she didn't notice that my taxes would require "additional work" in certain areas. She gave me the first quote after looking at all of my papers and no new information was provided the first quote to the then open ended quote of apparently I'm guessing $550 + hourly, but we don't know how many hours? Not a great way to run a business in my opinion. I liked the CPA but when it comes down to it they're going to have to run their business like a business- they can't increase the price 4 times during a meeting. They should be able to read the forms, ask some questions, give an estimate. (Edit: I don't have a ton of "issues" as the buisness owner below says, I'm just a small business owner. In fact the first increase was because "they didn't know they needed a schedule c" even I know that and I wasn't pressuring them for a quick estimate, I was happy to answer any questions). Also, the office setting is not professional. It has a really bare bones feeling. We met in the lobby (I would a private setting) and sofa was super uncomfortable, painfully so. They say that people can come in and DIY taxes with someone helping to answer questions but the little cubicles were totally empty while I was in the office- probably because this DIY area had absolutely nothing to offer- they didn't even have coffee! How can someone focus on taxes without coffee!!? (Edit: yes I brought the end of my coffee at first but did need more and didn't know they had any- I couldn't see it, I did look for it).

But the whole experience was unprofessional and ultimately unhelpful when it came to doing our actual taxes. First, I didn't hear anything from them for a couple of weeks after our initial meeting. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. Not only was Dominion still open, but they were able to move my appointment to earlier in the day since other clients had canceled. As soon as Carson was done with his previous appointment, he welcomed me back to his office and we started going through the paperwork. Carson was so great. He helped me access some additional information online when we realized I needed an additional piece of real estate paperwork. He even explained some deductions that we were eligible for that I was unaware of and allowed me to submit that paperwork later after I collected the necessary information at home. Perhaps the most amazing part of all of it is that Dominion only charges a $150 flat fee for your personal taxes. I thought for sure it would be like one of these chain tax places where the base rate only applies if you are filing in one state or have a single W-2.
