Since it is super popular, you have to…read moremake reservations on their website so that it's not overcrowded and to limit the disturbances to the cave. It gets pretty busy so make sure to set an alarm when the tickets get released. It's a 2.2 mile out and back cave, although if you're too tired or scared you can always turn around and head back. The deeper in the cave I went, the fewer the visitors. The process is pretty straight forward. Once you get checked in at the parking lot entrance, park and walk to the orientation tent where they ask if any of the clothing you are currently wearing has been to another cave (to avoid the spread of white nose syndrome in bats) and also some basic orienteering. They also have flashlights for rental if you forgot. These are really powerful flashlights so I highly recommend it since your cellphone light isn't going to cut it. It gets pretty chilly in there so bring jackets even if it's hot on the surface. The cave flooring is pretty even although there are some dips you might trip on if you're not prepared. No scrambling or anything strenuous. Very fun!

I also had no flashlight or headlamp of my own - I was reliant on two friends with flashlights. I totally acknowledge that I was completely unprepared, so take this review with a grain of salt and use your own judgment. HAVING SAID THAT...even if I knew what I was getting myself into, I still would have hated it and probably never gone. I am a "dirt trail with pretty views" kind of person so this was a nightmare for me. We climbed down the rocky cave entrance for about 5-10 minutes before fully leaving the light. I had to constantly watch where I was stepping so as to not step on a loose rock, fall and break my ankle. And it's really fun trying to "watch where you step" IN THE DARK. At the point where the decline ends and the entrance light is fully gone, I could have stopped, enjoyed the novelty of being in darkness and 50 degree moist air, and headed back. My friends convinced me that it "gets flat" soon...it does not get flat. I eventually had to head back because I was starting to panic. Later, I realized we didn't even make it a quarter of the way so I'm really glad I went back. This is NOT a beginner excursion. I was shocked to see children and elderly people coming down the cave entrance as I was leaving. I would NOT recommend this unless you are physically fit, healthy, and brave.

The last time I was here was well over ten years ago. I have been a huge astronomy nerd since I was a kid. This place has changed so much since I last came here. They did an impressive job with the expansion and upgrades. We enjoyed exploring the Discovery Center and walking on the outdoor pathway to the telescopes. Lowell Observatory is one of the oldest observatories in the U.S. and was founded by astronomer Percival Lowell. It was at Lowell that American astronomer and telescope maker Clyde Tombaugh discovered the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930. The original telescope (called an astrograph) that he used is still here at Lowell Observatory and you can check it out while exploring this place. We came here in the evening and enjoyed walking around under the stars. There is a Mars Rover parked outside that greets you when you enter. The new Marley Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center is three levels and has a gift shop and a cafe. On the roof is the open-air Dark Sky Planetarium that offers a 360-degree view of the night sky. There are games, activities and science exhibits in the Discovery Center for both kids and adults. After spending some time here, we went outside to check out the telescopes. The walking path around Lowell Observatory is my favorite part. The outdoor pathway is illuminated by glow-in-the-dark art depicting the Pleiades, comets and the Milky Way. We walked over to the Giovale Open Deck Observatory first. It was too cloudy to see anything through the telescopes on the evening that we were here. So we headed over to the dome that houses the Pluto Discovery Telescope. They have renovated this telescope since I was last here. It got a paint job and looks nicer. It was really cool to be in the same spot where history was made a hundred years ago. I highly recommend checking Lowell Observatory. I am biased because I am a huge science nerd. But they really did do a nice job with the new upgrades. Come here at night when you can gaze at the stars.

We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor exhibits, especially sun viewing through telescope, walking the scaled galaxy walk and the dome telescope where Pluto was discovered. We came back at night for stargazing . Such a wonderful experience. It gets cold so wear jackets and layers at night. They had glow in dark paths to illuminate walking. And sky viewing was magical!! There were multiple telescopes through which we saw stars, galaxies, star clusters. Even the observatory helpers had a laser pointer to point out constellations. All the stars for this observatory! Must visit while in Arizona to learn about our universe

Fair meaning he didn't want to start time on our lane if we wanted to get food to eat while playing. It's a plus even having a snack bar. Then also offering to wait to start time was a nice little bonus. He also wanted to make sure all three people in our party could stick one throw before starting time. Other than axes, this place also lets you throw knives & ninja stars with instruction on how to throw those, too. Near the snack bar there was also an air hockey table, video games & crane games. This facility also has darts and laser tag available, but I did neither of the additional activities. If you're not wearing closed toe shoes, they have loaner crocs up for grabs...although I'm not sure who would wear open toe shoes to this place or why they would.

It wasn't very busy, so we had plenty of time to enjoy both the arcade and laser tag without feeling rushed. The menu had a nice variety of options and was reasonably priced, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything about the visit felt easy, fun, and well-run. We would definitely come back and highly recommend FlagTag to anyone visiting Flagstaff--especially if you're looking for a fun, low-stress activity to enjoy with family or friends.

This is a cool place where you can see structures left by Native people (prehistoric culture…read moreSinagua) although there are also artifacts from the Archaic peoples before them who did not reside permanently in the canyon. There is a visitor center and two trails here. The Rim trail at a pretty even 0.75 miles is great for people who want a stroll that follows the canyon rim (out and back trail). You can see the structures from the rim, but it's even better with binoculars. The Island trail is slightly longer at 1 mi, but a steeper 185 vertical feet into the canyon with a whole bunch of stairs at the beginning, and returns the same way. I guess people get too tired to climb back up since there are numerous signs warning of the steep climb back. The trail begins at the back door exit of the visitor center, which they close at 4 pm (the entire monument closes at 5 pm, so they don't want anyone to start the trail and get locked in). Both trails were great and they had informational signs along the way. I really liked the Island trail since you get up close and personal with the structures. The visitor center was standard - offering a gift shop, bathrooms outside, and information about the history and significance of the area. The ranger staffing the information desk was pretty patient with the group of tourists and determining if they were fit to do the Island trail. It's a totally different vibe from the Grand Canyon, so don't expect huge views.

I'd been keeping an eye on the reviews on All Trails (one of the very few features I actually like on that app, but that's a story for another day) and knew several weeks in advance that snow on the mountain was a distinct possibility. When I made eye contact with Humphreys two days before summiting and literally saw tons of snow from about 60 miles away - along with very recent reviews warning about it - I knew I had to make a pit stop beforehand. It would PROBABLY be an exaggeration to say Peace Surplus saved my life, but without it (and its supplies), I don't think I get to the top of Humphreys Peak, or even close. I stopped by last Sunday, the day before my hike, knowing that I needed to get some type of traction on my hindpaws. I considered getting poles (which I've been mulling for years - we're getting close there), but the spikes for the hiking sneakers seemed paramount. I located them very easily right off to the side of the shoe section. I honestly don't know if $62 for these is insane or not, but they made the difference the following day so I can't sit here and say they aren't worth it. An absolute gamechanger, and something I can use going forward in less dramatic adventures if there's icy/snowy conditions afoot. Beyond my primary purchase, I was very intrigued by the little food/grocery store section off to the side by the entrance. It has a lot of hiking snacks that can usually be procured easily at a gas station (cough cough Clif Bar cough cough), but also the ones that are a bit harder to find without Amazon's help, like the Honey Stinger waffle, which for sure came in handy the following morning. There's a definite emphasis on overnight camping/thru-hiking, so there were quite a few freeze-dried dinners, etc. as well. It was an impressive selection. Everyone here was super friendly and nice. The people at the register immediately looked around for another potential customer to ring up the minute they were done with their prior patron, and several times I could overhear presumably managers spitballing how to allocate their staff based on where the immediate needs were. While I was in there, a few employees were outside handling a holiday sale, I believe, so I imagine it gets a little tougher to gameplan when literally some of your people aren't even in the store. No wasted energy at this place. I don't feel like I did more than skim the surface of what this store offered, but they had what I wanted and needed in the moment, and for sure they get some credit for my successful Humphreys ascent. Give Peace a chance.
