    Weekly Flyer Example Feb 2017
    Jay B.

We call this place "The Big Apple". We stopped in on Sunday, usually we go once a month. I like this little store because it has a large selection of produce. Produce is good quality and the variety is large. There are many items I don't recognize. For example you can buy cactus leaves, Fava Beans or Salicornia. I have no idea what these are or how to eat them, but I like the idea that I can buy them if I feel adventurous! They also had the largest single piece of raw sugar cane I've ever seen in a grocery store! Lots of fruits with many (what I'd consider) exotic types. Other sections include a meat and fish counter, deli, specialty cheeses, small bakery section with locally baked products as well as dairy and bulk nuts. Most of the store is fresh produce, this obviously is their main business. If you stop in for weekly sales, you can find some good deals. See the flyer I scanned from this week as an example. I don't find their regular prices cheap, it really varies. The nice part is the freshness and its clearly labelled where the food is coming from. For example the Fava beans where from Egypt or I could have bought Lebanese Cucumbers from Jordan, or garlic from Spain. Its not a student grocery store. Granted this is not their business as they provide a variety of unique items I have not seen elsewhere in Ottawa. Other specialties would probably be the whole bean coffee section, or bulk cookie section. The place was very busy Sunday afternoon, but I have been there on a winter weekday evening and there were more staff then customers. The women as the cash looked like they were going to fight over who would ring us through, they were so bored. The decorations in the store are cute. They have a country farm style going on with little fake roofs over the cash and other sections or old horse harnesses hung on the wall. Some nice mural paintings as well, which really beats the experience of the bland utilitarian big box store. This is a very pleasant neighborhood grocery store experience.

    Great deal!

A wide variety of fresh produce available. The meat section is very good. The steaks are always tasty and tender.

Geeze, if the seafood counter staff talked to each other less and were more polite after making people wait, then l'd shop here more often.

The Long Version: This small grocery store in Orleans markets itself as a Pakistani, Indian and Mediterranean market. It just opened up in August 2025 where Istanbul Food Mart used to be on Des Epinettes. I didn't even know the Istanbul Food Mart closed, but my brother who lives in the area told me about it. And when I drove by I saw a sign with a picture of samosas and knew I had to check it out, lol. My mom loves samosas, so when I came to visit her (she also lives near the store) I asked her if she wanted to check out the store together, and of course she was game. They did indeed have samosas. The big regular type and the smaller ones made with phyllo pastry. The big ones were vegetarian and $1.50 each. The smaller ones were chicken and $0.75 each. We got a big one and 3 small ones. They also had Indian sweets such as Barfi, Ladoo, Jelebi, Gulab Jamun and Rasgulla, sold by the weight. I don't know all the names but we ended up getting 4 different types to try. You can see my photo. The store has lots of spices, sauces and mixes. As well as imported drinks and snacks (my favourite, lol). The store is neatly organized. There's also an area at the front with tables and chairs where you can sit to enjoy some food or drink. We had the chance to speak with Ali himself and he was very friendly and welcoming. He told us his plans to expand their menu. They will be selling shawarma. He's also thinking of items like samosa chaat. And maybe some fusion poutine like curry poutine, and likely regular poutine too, lol. I think if they expanded their menu, their eat-in area would be a great place to have a snack or meal. It's by the front, which is all windows, so feels like you're in a solarium. The space is very lovely, and surprisingly so since it's inside a grocery store, lol. I liked how Ali was very genuine. When my mom asked if they will be selling big meat samosas, he said she's the third person to ask him that, so they will likely do so in the future. When I asked him if they will be selling baked samosas, he said I'm the only person who's ever asked that and he thinks baked samosas will likely not sell. Lol. I appreciate honesty! And I get it, you need to sell what people will buy ;) (As an aside, my mom said to me, "Jennifer, people want to eat deep-fried delicious things, not baked healthy alternatives like you do!") Fair! Haha. Ali also told us when his sign at the corner advertising samosas was handwritten no one came in looking for samosas but after he got a sign with a picture of samosas on it people started coming in asking for samosas, lol. The samosas were delicious. The big vegetarian one was filled with potatoes, peas and spices. It was spicy! Spicier than most samosas I've had and I loved it. The flavour was also unique. It was more complex and interesting than other samosas I've had. The small samosas were also good, but pale in comparison to the big one in flavour. My parents enjoyed the Indian sweets. They were too sweet for my tastes, but I already knew this because most desserts are too sweet for my liking, lol. The one with a carrot halwa base was the least sweet and the most enjoyable to me. Anyway, I'm really excited to see how this store evolves. I'll be stopping by again with my mom to try their new items. It's in a little plaza so there's free parking in the shared parking lot with other businesses in the plaza. Review #157 (2025)

A huge shout out to Catie S for telling me about this place because it is awesome! Fruits Express…read moreis a fruits and vegetables wholesaler but they are open to the public. Some things are huge bulk sizes like their gigantic bag of spring mix ($13.50) and flat of 30 eggs ($5), but some things you can buy smaller quantities like their 1 pound clamshell of strawberries ($1.75), bunch of spinach ($1.50), bundle of asparagus ($2) and 6 pack of avocados ($4). I think prices vary depending on what's in season, but prices are definitely cheaper than regular prices at grocery stores, and some things are even cheaper than grocery store sale prices. The place is a warehouse so it's industrial looking and not fancy. You'll see staff walking around with restaurant order sheets and loading orders up into a dolly and putting boxes into their trucks. It's cash only and there are no lines, no cash register, no receipts. You just find the owner (or ask anyone who works there and they'll direct you to the owner) he'll add things up in his head and give you the total. You pay him and leave with your goodies. In addition to fruits and vegetables, they have huge cans of tomato sauce too. The owner, Hassan, is super nice and friendly. We chatted a bit and I discovered that they've been open for around 5 years but just opened up to the public 2 months ago. All staff there are really nice too. One guy showed me where the bags were and another one asked me if I wanted a box to put all my stuff in. And when I left another guy asked me if I needed help loading my stuff into my car (I didn't actually buy that much but it was stuffed in a box so I guess it looked heavy (?)). Anyway, everyone was really friendly and helpful. So this place is on Canotek in an industrial strip mall. Follow the sign towards the back of the complex. There's a door marked "Fruits Express" it might be obscured by one of their delivery trucks, which was the case when I did my first lap around the building looking for this place, lol. There's lots of free parking. This place rocks! It's a bit far from my house, but is on the way to places I go to frequently, so yeah, I'll probably become a regular!

Hot tip: they also sell eggs. You sacrifice some of the conveniences of the grocery store (hours, aesthetic, location) but the prices are just about half of the grocery store, so it's totally worth it. I tell all my pals to go to Fruits Express. If you can make it out to Canotek within their opening hours, there's no reason not to give them a try. Oh, and they will like you better if you bring cash ;-)

To stop sweating buckets (more me), we headed inside to cool off. This store is small and quaint. It does cater to folks who have specific dietary needs, such as dairy-free or gluten-free products. It felt like a high-end health food store. I do mean high-end. Did you want a small carton of oat creamer for $10? You can find it here. Frankly, I loved looking at the varieties of dairy-free salad dressing. If I knew that a specific salad dressing flavour was my go-to, I'd splurge and get it here. However, I can't justify getting my usual grocery items, like fresh produce, for inflated prices when I could hit a Food Basics for much cheaper prices. I like that locals can walk to it. I just watched a news story about an area in Scarborough that saw two major supermarkets close within weeks. Locals have to take two buses and thirty minutes to get to a supermarket, which is sad. So, although pricey, you can still get your produce by walking over here. We didn't buy anything. It's the downside to being on vacation. I can't store everything that I want in a grocery store in a dinky mini fridge in my hotel room. It was fun checking out this store. If I hit the jackpot, I'd shop here every week. (284)

Herb & Spice is a small grocery store that leans to the "Health Food Store" side. I find the prices…read morereally expensive, from my assessment about 20-50% higher than at regular/chain grocery stores (like Loblaws, Metro, Food Basics, FreshCo, etc.) Even higher than other Health Food Stores that I usually go to (like Kardish and Natural Food Pantry and much higher than Healthy Planet). I personally have not found any products here that I can only get here. I think this store is good for people who live nearby and want to walk not too far to get something and can afford the higher prices. I'm all for supporting small businesses, but I'm also all for staying within my own budget. This store is in my neighbourhood, but it's actually farther from me than major grocery stores or Health Food stores, so it does not appeal to me, but it definitely serves a purpose and I can see how it appeals to other people. Street parking only.
