I have an appointment next week with Lisa at Healing In Motion in Dixboro. I'm going to have to…read moredrive there... Let's hope no other driver does some sudden movement because I'm not sure I'll be able to put the brake on quickly enough to stop in time. I went to this conventional physical therapy practice because of an old injury to my S/I joint and pain in my foot and leg. Georges, a man who received osteopathic training in Europe, works in the US not as a physician but as a physical therapist because his training in Europe didn't translate into a medical degree in the US. I went in with pain that was significant and intermittent. I now have some of the worst pain I have ever had from this old injury, and new pain to where I cannot drive. St. Joe's physical therapy is in the Michigan Orthopedic Center's building next to the Women's Center on the St. Joe Hospital campus. I was to receive 6 weeks of biweekly sessions from Georges for my S/I joint (which leaves me torqued with a functionally short leg and a pain level that was rising to about a 7, sometimes an 8). I am severely obese, and I got the immediate impression that Georges wasn't so happy to have to treat me. In addition, I got the feeling that he is pretty unhappy that he's not a doctor but a p.t. And this was before I knew he had training to be an osteopathic physician in Europe. He is in his 40s, I think. Frankly, I think he once had a scientific interest in how the body works and how to help people achieve optimum functioning. But now, the impression he left me with is that he is just going through the motions. For example, my pelvis is very tender and every time he went to work I would cringe from the surface pain. He spent no time thinking about what he could do to make it possible to work on me. I used to do similar work, and when I had trouble getting around a client's pain that was interfering with the work, I would figure out different ways to approach. I waited for Georges to do that but he just backed off and put me on electrical stimulation. I had to suggest that he do the ES before he worked on me the next time to see if I was less sensitive afterwards. In addition, he didn't do any physical assessment (such as checking to see how short my leg actually is) in order to have a baseline to compare with post-treatment. But those aren't the main problems. Georges was supposed to do a six-week series. He gave me two treatments the first week, then went on a two-week vacation! If I'd known this ahead of time, I would have waited to begin treatment after his vacation. I'm not sure the appointment scheduler was aware of his impending vacation when I made the appointments. After the second treatment, I felt slightly better for three days and then on the fourth day developed severe pain which worsened throughout the week. I have had to stop driving because I couldn't lift my right leg quickly enough to put on the brake. I do water jogging but now I can't even make it down one length of the pool without stumbling or gasping from pain. I returned to St. Joe's for work on my foot with a different physical therapist, named Rajiv. When I came in with another scrip from my Internist for help with the pain in my left leg (this is an older pain that was at a pain level of 4-5), he refused to help with that pain saying it was coming from the work Georges had done on me the week before. (I'd had this pain before coming to p.t., it had just elevated.) The second session that week, I insisted he do something for the right leg pain and the other increase in pain. He had one of his staff do electrical stimulation on my pelvis and then did a bit of pressing on my low back. That was it. I am left with having to take more pain meds than I have ever taken. I have to hire transportation in order to get to the pool and the grocery. I had been to several physical therapists in the past, and I've never had treatment that made me have this much more constant pain. If you go to this business, you will probably receive adequate care. Just be sure to be smart about it and ask a lot of questions and demand better treatment. I think I would recommend someone obese find somewhere else to go.
