Because I read the reviews on here, I decided to not try and save a few bucks by going to a cheaper competitor who had some lousy reviews. A while back my Father converted the best of his slides and home movies to VHS. I realized that even though I still have a VHS player, who has a clue if it works. So I decided to have these priceless mementos converted to DVD for posterity. Price quoted was $24.95 per tape (or something like that). They told me they'd call in around 10 days. They called in a week, price was as quoted. Work was perfect. DVDs played great and I ended up uploading the videos to YouTube for other family members. Pro-Tape is where I take all of our old tapes (VHS & super 8) ; as well as some 16mm videos and audio tapes from the 1950s-60s, that had been stored in the basement for approximately 4 decades. Some of the reel-to-reel tapes had been twisted and crinkled over the years. Some were still inside the cans they were stored. The very old reel-to-reel tapes were very important to me because they had my Parents in their 20s while stationed in Germany, my Father's voice - training men and going over some type of exercise maneuvers w(w/o) a weapon during the Vietnam War, and our last recorded message to our Dad while he was in Vietnam. These guys were great. I brought in three water damaged camcorder tapes in hope of converting them to dvd. They have me the run down of how it works and an estimated time frame about 6 weeks. Fast forward six weeks, Matt gave me a call and let me know they were able to convert these tapes. Priceless moments were recovered off these tapes and I was able to surprise my wife with the DVDs. OK, I feel a bit weird about writing a review on a place that sells tape stock for audio and video projects - but, what the heck, it's a good place and fellow Yelpers in a non-food/booze mood might need the services of Pro-Tape someday, RIGHT? Anyway, Pro-Tape is a great place located right here in AUSTIN that sells all kinds of tape stock at terrific - LOW LOW - prices. From MiniDV to HDCAM and BetaSP, they got it. If you are an old school, "Greatest Generation" homeboy, they got your VHS and (EVEN) 8mm, too! All for prices that are as low as they get. I bought a 'brick' of MiniDV tape from them to use on my last documentary project - cheap and good. Even if you only need a few tapes to capture that precious little Yelper taking his/her first steps, I'd check the prices at Pro-Tape first. 4 stars (could be five if it wasn't so hard to find, near 71 and I-35). read more

So, I bought a Groupon from these guys because I had a tape which contained the only existing footage of all my grandparents together before their deaths, and wanted to convert it to DVD or digital and give it to my parents as a gift. It said to call for an appointment, so I called and explained about the Groupon and the project I had. The guy told me that unfortunately, they would not be able to honor the Groupon because the business was shutting it's doors and going bye-bye. I asked why they were still issuing Groupons if that was the case. He said it was a mistake and if I contacted Groupon, surely I could get my money back. I was disappointed, but...what was I gonna do, the poor guy was going out of business. So, I contacted Groupon, went through their arduous refund process, and three weeks and numerous phone calls later, received a Groupon credit, which was only 50% of what I had originally paid. Frustrated that I had been ripped off, I gave up and decided to take up the project again at a later date. Well, over a year has past since then, and I see they are still in business!......Did they ever shut down? Well, I called over there to see. The person that answered the phone.....yes.....the SAME GUY......told me "ummm nooo.......we have always been here......haven't gone out of business or anything like that....." So, basically, these people are Clown World. Typical of Austin businesses, I have found, to act unprofessionally and outright lie to the public when it suits them. Probably underpay staff and treat them like garbage too. If they have staff and it's not a one-hipster operation. I wouldn't trust these people with my used toilet paper. Save your money. Buy a device called Dazzle. Very cheap on Amazon. Hook it up to your computer and VCR, and do it yourself. There's no reason for this guy to be in business. I had an old VHS tape that spent decades in less-than-ideal conditions. They were very knowledgeable, professional, and thorough in explaining the process and the chances of a successful transfer to DVD. They were able to complete the transfer but they told me the VHS tape might be unusable because of the process involved in getting it back "in shape". Lo and behold, it still works! It's a horrible place. Do not think about coming here. I had 100 DVDs duplicated through their system. They asked me to test one DVD on their fat 1950s TV where you can't tell if it's even HD or if it's widescreen. It looked fine. My original video was crispy clear, but when I picked up 100 DVDs, it is amazing to see how bad the quality is. The guy had a bad attitude and refused to work with me... No refunds. I spent $200 on the DVDs and their work for NOTHING. It's horrible. Don't bother working with them. read more

I had a former review of 3 stars even though the staff helped me with all of my needs. I wound up short some dvds and with 300+ discs floating around with different covers, different content I just flubbed before leaving the place. I mentioned it in my review and they contacted me here to make sure we cleared it up. Can you say consumer win?! It'd been months but they still had my cover art and when I supplied the disc gave me a spindle free of charge. Any other business would have put their hands on their hips and asked why I waited so long and that I'd have to pay again. The guys were just as friendly this time and I'm going to purchase with them again when I need more dvds. My dad's 90th birthday is coming up. In the 40s and 50s he called square dances and had a bunch of old 78 rpm records he would take to dances. They got really scratched and worn over the years. In the 80s he set up a cheap cassette recorder in front of the record player speakers and copied the 78s to tape. I took that tape to ProTape this week to have them convert it to CD. I am extremely pleased! I paid a little extra to have them clean up the audio and insert breaks between the songs. (Well worth the nominal upgrade fee.) Even though they had just moved and were still setting things up, they got the job done faster than expected - which I really appreciate. When I first played the CD I was amazed that they had taken time to add the song title to each of the CD tracks. Most commercial CDs don't even have that! The overall sound quality was much improved, too. I could not be happier with the service I received. A+ I know dad will be thrilled to hear his old favorites again, thanks to ProTape. If you need a minidisc player, they may be the only people in town (or in Texas?) who have one. I needed my voice demo from my radio days in the 1990s dubbed from a Sony minidisc into an MP3 for a job application. Also, I needed a super quick turnaround, and he was fine with obliging me, just because I asked, and with no penalty. I really appreciate the professional courtesy I was given both on the phone and in person. Bonus? Pro tape.com did an amazing job transferring my VHS, and mini 8 tapes to DVDs. I brought in 55 total and they called me as they were done to pick up. My family could hardly contain themselves watching on DVD as our VHS is nonexistent. I did not pay until the last one was complete and what a deal!! I was wary of trusting my videos to anyone or sending off in the mail, all DVDs are as good as the tape! I would trust ProTape.com with anything I film in the future! read more

I've used them to rent digibeta players (high end studio digital video tape players-expensive) several times. Portable digibeta players are flaky and unreliable but I never had an issue with the ones I rented from them. Good experience with very difficult to acquire merchandise. read more

I'm super grateful to have this storefront. I've worked with tape before so I wasn't a total newb when I went in there to get a take-up reel for my new otari 5050 bII. I bought a plastic take-up reel, got it home, realized it was extremely warped. Took it back. The guy was cool about exchanging it for another one. I get it home, and it's also slightly warped, as evidenced by my tape flanging. I'm not bothering with returning this one and would just say get some higher quality take-up reels. read more

At first, it felt strange that why Apple would re-direct their service to somewhere else, but what the heck, I made the phone call just to find out. I have to say I was so happy that I called. Yikes! Accidents happen right? I spilled coffee on my Mac & in a few minutes, keyboard won't work. Hurried to the nearest Apple store who promptly told me to fork out $755 for fixing it. Really? That's a car payment! A new computer! Plus the apple geek server I spoke with didn't have any personality at all...no signs of sympathy, empathy, it was like talking to a logic board {I'm not generalizing & truth be known, I love geeks, most have awesome personalities ,errr, except this one}. Anyway, I called Pro Tape & Jesus answered & I heard empathy from his voice. Yippee! He told me the procedure, how much it's going to cost. Went on my way, met him, left the computer & 1 day later {or maybe less}, the computer was fixed & the price was a fraction of the cost of what I would've paid at the Apple store. This is a great place for having CDs and DVDs made from old tapes. The guys that run this place are very skilled at it and are musicians etc. in their spare time. A lot of musicians bring their old recordings here to be professionally produced into a decent product.
