So this is going to be a very mixed review- I've been going to the Prohaircutters in the Rockaway Mall for 6+ years now because I had found a guy who do a flattop and not screw it up. 6+ years Elliot cut my hair and now he's gone-he's back in NYC because coming to Rockaway was a pain in the neck-especially from what I saw of the way the manger and the assistant manager treated the guy. I found a new guy, Caesar, and he does a great job on my hair and my son's hair. So because I dont have to find a new barber, I'll keep going-for a while at least. Now, the rest of the story (thanks Paul Harvey)-I go in on Saturday and see a sign that says: "Effective Sept 1, 2012 due to increase (sic) costs by our credit card companies, we apologize in advance for your inconvenince, however, gratuities will no longer be accepted on credit or debit cards." What a crock of crap. They dont want to take credit cards-fine, then don't, but don't give me this crap about not being able to put a tip on the card...cheap, nickel and dime crap right there. One last thing, the assistant manager is rude, obnoxious, and a real b*#ch who takes pride in harrassing the barbers/hair dressers instead of letting them do their jobs. Listen lady-NO ONE cares what the person cutting their hair is wearing as long as they do a good job. I don't care if they talk to each other, take a quick call, or take a drink if soda-let them do their jobs and leave them alone! Let me first say I have been going to Sandra for the last 5 years and she is one of the best colorists I have ever been too! Not only is she professional but, she takes her time to listen to what you want. I don't see how the other customers had such a hard time with her? Her English first is fine and I have no problem understanding her. Second if you expect to get in and out quick why bother getting your hair colored? She is absolutely the best I drive over 2 hours just to have her expertise and she never ever has failed my expectations! Pro Haircutters would be crazy to ever let her leave them . I honestly don't know why I keep going back here. I've lived in the Denville/Rockaway area my whole life, and Pro Haircutters is the most convenient / cheapest place in the area. HOWEVER, BEWARE: if you have anything even close to "long" or "thick" hair, they WILL overcharge you, even more than the price that is listed on their "menu" above the reception area. I have been grossly overcharged here more times than I care to admit, but I think today was final straw: with a blond, younger-looking hairdresser named Jamie, who was not only extremely RUDE when I asked why I was being charged as much as I was, but that's not even the best part. I went in this morning for a quick trim. I had a bus that I had to catch at 12, and got there at 10. Jamie told me she wouldn't be able to shampoo cut and blow-dry in that time, to which I said okay. Jamie proceeded to wet the ends of my hair with a spray bottle and trimmed no more than what she called an inch off my hair (which was more like a few centimeters). After, she dried the ends with a blow dryer and I was out of there in 20 minutes. My everything above my shoulders was untouched-- I basically had the same hair I walked in with, except a few centimeters shorter. It was only at the front desk where she gave me a bill for $35 and had the audacity to tell me that because of the "length" of my hair, she should have charged me $40 -- which was $2 more than the price of a full shampoo, cut, and style for those with "long/thick hair". Hello??? First of all: Jamie didn't even touch anything above my shoulders, so what does length have to do with anything? Second of all, why was I being charged for services she didn't perform (the shampoo, and the sad excuse for a "style")? The lady/manager at the front desk were no better-- they pretended to have no say in the matter while Jamie called the shots and were speechless when I expressed my frustration with the service. Jamie: I wouldn't have minded tipping you so you got your $40, but there was no reason to be so condescending and rude about it! All in all-- I have given Pro Haircutters Rockaway MANY chances, hoping ONE good experience would make up for all of the times I've been overcharged, but nope. They've lost my business. read more

Veryyyy Unprofessional!!!! I had an appointment for 6:30 pm for color and highlights. I get to the salon at 6:35! The hairdresser (Sandra) had washed anther costumer's hair and tells me that she is running behind and immediately corrects her comment and tells me " you are late!" So I asked "how long before you can see me because I'm paying a babysitter to be here" her response was: "well I have to cut and then blow dry". So I decided to wait and the whole time I wondered about how I was 5 minuets late but she had already washed someone else's hair, meaning she didn't wait for me to even arrive on time! So after waiting 40 minuets, she tried to wash my hair so I said: "but I'm having highlights and color done" and her exact words were: "are you crazyyy?!" So at this point I was really annoyed specially at her rude behavior! She checked with front desk and came back to tell me she didn't realize I was booked for all that and that she can't do it today!!!! I spoke with the manager and while he tried to check on this, the girl at the front desk mentions to him how Sandra (the hairdresser) has been "running behind with her appointments since afternoon!!!!!" Although that comment wasn't meant for my ears, it got me very upset because here she was trying to tell me I was late, and lying to my face!!!!!! They offered me 50% off my next color/highlights appointment which I didn't accept because I decided I won't be going back to such unprofessional place and people who don't respect you enough to be truthful and just apologize for their mistake! read more

Yesterday, I accompanied someone to get highlights in her hair. She was in Maria's chair. I explained to Maria in Spanish what was wanted. She clearly did not understand. Not only did she not get the color right, she tried to blame the client! What was supposed to be an hour visit turned into a 5 and 1/2 hour terrible experience. After messing up the simple highlights, they had to return the hair to its original color because it was completely wrong. Then, after THEIR mess up, they tried charging full price, even though the service wasn't accurately provided! First, they tried charging $100, which is absurd. Then, they "lowered" it to $90, and ultimately, $75. So $75 spent on a service not provided. Needless to say, we will NEVER go back there again. Wish I could give this ZERO stars. Made a very simply blowout appointment for 2:00PM. Got there at 1:50PM. The hairdresser came to the front desk, and stated "She wasn't advised of my appointment and there was no way she could take me". So I look at the front desk receptionist and she tells me to come back at 2:00, that she'll figure out who can take me. Don't come here. Front desk stands there, picking their teeth (which is disgusting) not knowing how to properly handle a schedule book. Giving this place a 2 instead of a 1 because there are a few stylists here who actually know what they are doing and listen to you. After my last cut, I am unsure if I will be going back. I've been trying to grow my hair out and asked for less than an inch taken off and just clean up with the long layers I already have. I walk out with my hair in 2 distinct layers- one that falls right below my chin and one that goes down to my chest. As someone with curly/wavy hair, I am extremely upset. Oh and my hair is uneven basically ALL over. The layers are NOT blended by any means. It looks liked a bob hair cut with tails. I took my 6 year old daughter to this salon for a nice experience getting her hair cut and I must say I'm sorry she had to sit through such a terrible service. Our hairdresser was rude from the beginning and very short and unfriendly which is odd when you are dealing with a child. While washing her hair, my daughter could only stretch her neck back so far and the hairdresser makes a comment and says " this is why we don't like cutting kids hair". They she proceeded to use a dirty brush with other peoples hair in it to rip through my daughters hair, so hard that her head would bend with the force. This was the first and last time I will ever come to this place and I would hope no other child has to go through this while getting their hair cut. A solid haircut for a solid price. Just remember, you are getting your haircut at a MALL, not a fancy salon, and sometimes you get what you pay for. I usually go to Lianne (she's great at communicating during the haircut to make sure you get exactly what you want!), but the past couple of times I've been too lazy to make an appointment and was very happy with the stylists assigned to me for my walk-ins. However, for the price and location, I know it's always a gamble; I'm definitely not surprised that people have not been happy with the service. I had gone in to have my hair cut by one of the barbers that I regularly use. She was out with a sick child so I asked for one of the other barbers as I knew their price and it was $18 less than a beautician. I ask the lady as the front desk and even said I was willing to wait but she said that, I think her name was Miriam, (she did not speak English) also cut short hair with a tool. However, she chopped my hair up terribly Then when I got to the front desk the lady said that would be $42. I told her I was supposed to have a barber. She said none were available and I said I would have waited. I come in from 2 hrs away and get my appts done and come with just enough money to pay for appts, lunch and gas. So for my entire life, I was going to a local luxury shop, getting my long, thick hair cut and layered, washed and blown- for well over $100. I thought with haircuts, you get what you pay for. Well, I don't know if that's true, but I'll tell you one thing- I paid a fraction of that when I tried Pro Haircutters and received the best haircut experience of my life. Now what I want in a hair cut may be different from you, so here's what I liked that they seem to do regularly: - The stylists are real people. No fake smiles and glossy coddling or uncomfortable, forced chitchat, just nice people who do their jobs quickly, generally cheerfully, and well. My luxury haircuts took nearly 2 hours. They got me in and out in 30 minutes. - The stylists do work fast and want to move people through- they do give individualized attention but quickly. That works for me. I suspect the stylists are so talented because they must cut upwards of 15 heads a shift, where my old luxury salon probably saw 3 clients a day. As a born and bred Jersey farmgirl, I like the speed and the no-crap, let's do a great job fast atmosphere. - The stylists do take their own liberties, especially if you let them. Speak up! If they're cutting too short or not enough, SAY SO. If you don't like the haircut walking out, the time to speak up was 20 minutes before. For me, I don't know a thing about hair. I make very clear at the beginning- the most I'll do in the morning is brush it. Maybe. I tell them I need to be able to put it in a ponytail and would like some long layers and want it to be thinner and lighter, and they sort the rest out. Hairstylists are trained to know what style and cut looks good on what head and face and color. Each time I have used this approach at ProHaircutters, I have gotten a cut I never would have selected for myself but am absolutely in love with. I imagine that this means that if you're a silent mouse in the chair, or you are incredibly nonspecific, you might end up with something you don't expect. The stylists can't read your mind, nor can they recall how they cut your hair last time. Be clear, and the stylists will be glad to give you precisely what you ask for. - The stylists are focused on making you look good, especially if you're honest and clear with them. I received an incredibly careful and detail-oriented eyebrow wax there by a wonderfully sweet woman (still refreshingly quick) and have been offered free services before when it was clear I needed one or a stylist thought it would improve my look. That kind of real care is invaluable to me. - The cost. I am never going back to dropping $150 for a haircut and eyebrow wax. ProHaircutters does it cheaper and definitely better- I always have a great look I've never tried before, lots more time to do other things, and plenty of cash still in my pocket. I will make a note here that it does seem like management is too harassing to the stylists- I'm not docking a star for it because the service offered is a cheap haircut and that's what I get. But I hope they treat their employees well (translate: BETTER) because the stylists work incredibly hard. Go in, get great haircut, pay a super-competitive price, and move on with the day. Most of their hairdressers don't give you the haircut you ask and pay for. Leeanne (I am unsure of the correct spelling of her first name) is especially bad when it comes to listening and following directions. Then they cop a surly attitude if a customer says something and/or changes to another hairdresser. Elsa is one of the few hairdressers who actually listens to customers. I drive 60+ miles round trip to get my hair cut, colored and styled by Mabel. She used to be five minutes from my home; and after too much time trying to find somebody closer...I bite the bullet and go. She is the only hairdresser I have found that cuts my hair to look just like the pictures I show her. Every time! It's just not worth growing out somebody else's mistakes. Not sure where to begin. I come here for blowouts every so often. Don't have a regular person. I'm usually satisfied with whomever I get as a walk-in. Today was an exception. Shampoo was not enjoyable. Water all over. I think the chair was broken and kept scraping the floor as I was being turned in the chair. My hair was being blown out like an 80s punk singer. I figured it would be fixed toward the end. The biggest problem was that the blow dryer was too hot. It was burning my scalp. She told me to slump in my chair and it wouldn't be so hot. Umm, No. I asked for a different hairdresser. Had to ask twice. She claimed that with my hair type the dryer has to be hot. Don't think so... I'm 50 yrs old. This was my first time at Prohaircutters at the Rockaway Mall, though not my first time at the mall. I went in there on a Monday late afternoon, at 7pm and it was packed. After a friendly Hello from the front desk, I was surprised as to how fast I was a signed to Margot (Margo). She was a delight as she knows how to cut and was very gentle, unless some others that leaves bruises on the head. I was impressed by her cutting techniques, her super sharp cutters and her sense of humor. I always get nervous when I'm with a new cutter, so she put me at ease. I have held off writing a review mainly because I was so angry and very disappointed with the service at this salon. I have now cooled off and I feel it's very important to state that you get what you pay for. This was not my first time with this stylist, and I felt she knew what combination of color to use on my hair, since she had satisfactorily done it before. I was wrong! It was my birthday week-end and I was prepared to spend some time due to the service I required, but 5 hours! I thought, as she was pulling and tugging at my hair that this was taking far too long, but I was not prepared for the final result. As she took the foils off, she called someone else over. I caught a glimpse of my orange hair at that time and realized she had to make a correction. I should have called the manager, but I let her go on. She then color corrected her mistake. After another hour she had me turned with my back to the mirror, as she blew out my hair. I now realize why......my hair which is normally brown, was now almost black! What a horror as I am no longer 18and looking for a "goth"look! I couldn't wait to get out of there. She knew I was very dissatisfied and gave me a whopping15 percent coupon.....one more note of caution: The place is dirty...she dropped her comb 2x and never sterilized before using on my hair....appointments are largely ignored. Prepare to wait as walk-ins are taken first, even with scheduled appointments. I found this out on a previous visit and I should have not returned.
