I've come to see Tommy & Diane at Princess Nails a good ten times now, and every manicure I've gotten has been simply superb. Diane really takes the time to do it right. She will mix colors, do and re-do designs, and work with you to make sure your nails turn out exactly as you'd like. She and her husband are also some of the sweetest people you will meet in Somerville. They truly care about their customers and consistently go above and beyond to make something as simple as getting your nails done a profoundly positive experience. Wow this place is bad. I walked in for a mani pedi because it's the end of the school year and I thought I'd treat myself and they were the closest place. They had two people there, one leaving as I walked in. I have to go home and redo this before a meeting. Maybe at one point they were rated best of Somerville but that time has long past. I'm not positive the tools they use get sanitized before use on another person. The gentleman who gave me a manicure used a little bit of alcohol on a cotton ball to wipe down the cuticle clipper. I get not being able to afford an autoclave but those need to be sitting in barbicide or another sanitizer before use on another person. I honestly can't believe the pedicure chair I sat on was duck taped for more than 50% of it. The people running it are fine and nice but holy crap the place is falling apart and the pictures speak for themselves. read more

"Man," I thought to myself as I sat waiting at the red light at Willow and Broadway. "You know what Ball Square could really use? A nail salon. Just a nice little homespun cheap-o place so I don't need to trek to some other square for my mani/pedi needs. I mean, catch the snap, Ball Square. This isn't rocket science." I looked up, apparently for the first time ever. "Oh, hi, Princess Nails, which takes over almost a whole block and I clearly NEVER NOTICED. How are you today?" I can't say the decor does much to encourage its visibility - it's kind of like an old Chinese restaurant that got renovated into a salon, kind of, not entirely. It's not a particularly welcoming sight. However, the lady who did my nails was super friendly, the price was right, and the manicure, I shit you not, DID NOT COME OFF. We're all used to some two-days-out chipping, and I swear, I week later, even after using my glossy red thumb to strum a guitar, like, A LOT, the mani was still in tact. I needed actual nail polish remover because I got tired of it. For $13, that's a cost-per-wear that I can get behind. So notice this place, you guys! A little extra scratch will help with some aesthetic improvements, especially considering clients only need to come back every 5 years for a touch-up. read more

This place does not look like much and many would pass it up on looks alone. Lucky for me I gave them a shot and I can happily say this place does great nails. My last pedicure lasted seven weeks! Week seven looked just as good as week one. I just wish they would spruce the place up so the atmosphere matched the work. It's worth checking out. read more

Incredibly sweet, kind and comfortable place. I felt like a princess! Minus one star because they only have one pedicure chair and turned two people away while I was there. They do take walk-ins, but since it's just the couple who owns it working there, they get backed up pretty fast. Still, a bargain and a real treat! read more

I have to say that I've been to a fair amount of salons to get my nails done and at this salon, you get what you pay for. For a regular manicure, the price is $12.00. I was hoping that my manicure would last at least two full days, but it chipped on the middle of day 2. I unfortunately wasn't impressed with the quality, but because of the price this wasn't much of an issue. I am sure that other services offered like acrylics or shellac are worth a second try. I'll probably go back to try a shellac manicure because Diane really gives you the full experience. She's very sweet and listens and responds to you. The interior of the place isn't anything special, so don't walk by confused if you're looking for it because it looks like across between an empty store front and a living room. The appearance doesn't phase me, personally. If you're someone who doesn't mind a less than glamorous nail place with very affordable pricing, this place is ideal. read more

if you're used to spa-like nail salons, be prepared for a bit of a departure when you enter this place. there's grubby carpet, decidedly un-chic wood paneling, totally 80s beauty posters, one lonely peeling black vinyl pedicure chair (albeit with massage settings!), and a small child watching cartoons in the back room. but just as fancy surroundings do not necessarily make for a fancy pedicure, unstylish surroundings do not necessarily make for an unstylish pedicure. the lady in charge is very nice and will incessantly offer you magazines to read (i learned that, however terrible rachael ray may be, her magazine is actually full of extremely delicious-looking recipes). the nail artist was very fast and did a good job. i have some chips a week later, but this is probably more my fault for weaing flip flops everywhere and being very careless than the fault of the manicure itself. one caveat: the place is apparently cash only, and a pedicure alone costs $25, so be prepared. read more

The interior is pretty barebones, but Diane made me feel so appreciated that I'd go back regularly. I went in for a last-minute manicure ($12) for New Year's Eve, and after mentioning that I always mess up my polish within 15 minutes of getting my nails done, she did everything she could to ensure that I left with manicure intact: I paid beforehand, she asked me to put on my coat beforehand too, she sweetly carried my purse around and gave me some fashion magazines to read while I did my two drying cycles. Very friendly service. My manicure lasted all night without scratches. read more

Diane is the sweetest. She did a great job on my gel manicure, and even gave me an extra coat when I told her I was going camping! She was very nice and chatty and took time with removing my previous gels, which I really appreciated. My previous salon never let them soak long enough and always damaged my nails taking them off. Ok...let me start by saying that this is a tough review to write. This is a local neighborhood spot with a friendly, involved owner trying to make a living. I am not trying to trash anyone. As other reviewers have said, the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. You are shown to a very worn massage chair. I looked in the foot basin for evidence of sanitizing; hard to judge. I was a bit concerned when she sprinkled in a sani-soak powder, but not having had a lot of pedicures, I thought that this might be okay. Then she proceeded to pull tools out of the drawer. I thought they looked a little worn, but, again, hard to judge. Then she took out the emery board and I could see that it was used. Things did not improve. I wish I could more positively comment on the cleanliness. The neighborhood could use the service. Unfortunately, I will not go back. Friendly and nice is good. Cleanliness is more important. read more

You might be tempted to pass Princess Nails by (as I have before) but don't make that mistake! While it may not look fancy, this is clearly a family business, run by people who really care. I just had an excellent pedicure, including a fantastic foot massage. Diane is wonderful, and listened carefully when I explained some specific issues I have with my toes. Such friendly couple and the woman did an amazing job on my pedicure, it looks great. The only thing is that the place needs to be renovated. The sign outside is a bit worn and the furniture inside is the same way. I would like to see them invest in 2 new pedicure chairs and a new sign. But overall great experience. read more

Diane was so lovely - their salon doesn't have any frills and isn't fancy, but if you're looking for somewhere clean, professional and friendly service, and fabulous looking nails, you've found it! They were about to close, but I came in and asked if they could do a shellac mani/pedi and Diane took me on with a smile. She was meticulous, didn't rush through anything and couldn't have been more pleasant! My toes and nails look wonderful and they have earned a customer for life in me! read more

Princess Nails Salon in Ball Square on Broadway in Somerville, a few minutes walk from Tufts University Medford campus or a few minutes walk from Davis Square T on the redline, with a bus stop right in front of the salon as well, does the best manicures, pedicures, and extensions, with professionalism, courtesy, and pleasantness, too. Dai and Tommy are not only excellent manicurists and pedicurists, they are also lovely people (as are their kids, who, as they have grown up over the years, are not as present in the back room, quietly watching TV, doing homework, or working on the computer, as they used to be). For the quality of the nail work that is done here, the prices are very reasonable, too....Granted, the place is really very drab looking, and definitely needs a good paint job and an update to the décor, BUT, what is your priority? Mine is to get the best possible pedicure and/or manicure I can get, that will last a long time looking good, and not overpay. And that is what I get here- a tremendous value, AND an overall happy/restful experience. I learn to pretty much ignore the physical surroundings, and revel in the attention and care being given to my hands and feet..... And oh yes, payment in cash only. read more
