4.5 Yep, you're…read moreeating in a gas station. When I was coming up with a list of things to do on a sunny Monday in late spring, eating at a gas station was not high on the list. But as I plotted and planned, the birria tacos kept coming to the fore. I suppose my lunch at a gas station was inevitable. And I'm glad it was. Admittedly, I was a bit off by the prices. Again: gas station. But I suppose the Mid-Atlantic isn't the South and things are going to cost what they cost. But $3.75 for a soda and $16 for tacos was a bit of a hard sell. And then I ate them. The chicken birria* taco order came in an oversized four-pack bursting with ingredients, flavor and a large side of consomme. Between the seasoned chicken, cheese, onions, cilantro, pan-fried fatty goodness, and crunch of the shell, I was deep in food-like.** These were not street tacos. These were hefty, large-hand sized, meaty, heavy talk pieces that were worth the price, regardless of location. You get your money's worth at MRT. I ate my bounty in the station. The owner (?) was nice, chill and about his business. He welcomed me in, answered questions and made sure that I was happy with my food before I took the first bite. Between the smell and presentation, how could I not be? This may be a gas station but you'll get your food with restaurant sensibilities. The soda was over-priced, though. *Is that really a thing? **Food love is hard to come by.

The churrasco (medium rare) is absolutely some of the best I've had. The chicken enchiladas were so comforting and filling. I almost never order chicken at restaurants because I'm afraid it will be dry - this was anything but. They have daily specials but you can't beat half off tacos on Taco Tuesdays. The carne asada tacos are great and come 4 to an order. The birria tacos come 3 to an order with a small cup of consommé. The highlight of this place is their house-made hot sauce. You can purchase it separately as well to take home. One is a habanera sauce and the other is an avocado jalapeño. I'm obsessed and use it on everything: chips, fish, steak, eggs.

A small amount of groceries to look at and a casual take out kitchen in the back. They take it a bit too far by not having a menu to choose from but the staff is friendly and gave a rough framework of their choices. We went with four lengua tacos and ate them standing up in the shop. Absolutely delicious! Flavorful and tender meat. After being underwhelmed by the nearby Japanese restaurant, we returned to Oaxaca for round 2. Two pastor tacos, two chorizo tacos, and a Mexican "pizza" that another customer recommended. Pastor tacos were some of the better tacos we've had in a while! Mexican pizza was pretty cool, lots of fresh and vibrant toppings. (Cheese, avocados, meat, etc.) I initially thought it would be the traditional Mexican tlacoyos and was looking forward to the thicker tortilla. This was a thin crust style pizza but still delicious! Certainly wish Oaxaca was in my neighborhood!

The Sirloin was cooked exactly as I requested--well-done but still very juicy and flavorful. To top it off, the staff was so helpful and kind when I called in the order. I'm definitely a returning customer now!

Service has been nothing but kind, helpful, and attentive every time we've gone. On our last visit, we were jonesing for happy hour and asked for the drink menu, only to discover they don't serve alcohol but they're BYOB. "And there's a wine and liquor store only two blocks away," our smiling server whispered conspiratorially. It was a genius idea. While we waited on our order, my husband jetted out for a 6-pack of Modelos and got back just as our chicken salad was being set down on the table. We asked for it to be timed as an appetizer, and I'd say the serving size might be closer to an appetizer than an entree. But the chicken pieces were well-marinated and delicious, making the salad a meaty entry point into our shared steak fajitas. These fajitas are a winner winner chicken - er, steak - dinner. Since we got it done medium well (my preferred doneness - feel free to judge me for it), I was worried about the steak being tough but these were tender enough for both my husband and I to emit a simultaneous "wow" at first bites. The sauce on them was also incredible, so much that we asked our server about it when he checked on us mid-meal. He crossed his heart and demurred, "It's a secret, so I can't really tell you," but when we pressed for more information, he admitted the main base was "lots of tomatoes". Well, whatever's in that magic sauce was good enough for us to drag our spoons against the near-empty fajita plate, trying to get every last drop of it. My husband and I have visited twice now, and our order has ranged from good to excellent (with those steak fajitas being the high winner thus far). There are a few parking spots in the front lot but being that this is in a quiet, residential area, there's plenty of parking to be found on the side streets if necessary.
