Stopped in for a late lunch with my Salvadoran friend after an afternoon of hiking. When he saw the grease glistening in the pictures of the pupusas here, he knew they'd be great and that we had to go. It's a small spot. I think they're mostly take out. The restaurant is pretty spartan, but you can see the kitchen from the dining area. We tried the Yuca con Chicharron, Tamal de Elote, and Mixta, Queso Chicharron y Frijol Pupusas. The yuca con chicharron was OK. The pork was super crunchy, and the yuca was soft inside with a crisp outer layer. The tamal de elote was a bit dry, but tasty with the crema. The pupusas were the best I ever had. They were also the cheapest at under $2.50 a piece. They were super hot, and stuffed with meat, cheese, and beans. They were a bit greasy, which is apparently how you know the pupusa is good. Not dry at all, very moist, tender, and flavorful. The slaw and red sauce it comes with is tasty. And it's still super hot, so probably best to eat them with a fork and knife read more

I've been coming here for some time and it's a little hidden gem. I wanted to share my good and bad experiences and why I don't rate it five stars but might help others give this place a try. The food is always fresh although it does take some time and the wait can be a little long. You're guaranteed to always have fresh food. I'm just a little disappointed with the Customer Service. I was looking for a Salvadoran restaurant in Bergen County since I've moved here over a year ago. I found this hidden gem near my nail salon. It's a small little "hole in the wall" (my faves). I don't think I'd dine in during this time because of how small it is. I ordered pupusas and flautas de pollo to go. The food was good! The flautas were different than I'm used to because they put red sauce on them making them wet. The pupusas de queso were good. I will definitely order again but I'm interested to try different items on the menu. It felt really authentic. Pupusas are decent. Taco and tamale not so much. The steak taco was really tough and gristly. Tamale was pretty dry but it could be because we picked it up late at night. Stick with pupusas. I order 8 mix pupusa last night with a side of chirriaron as well. Picked up my food. When we got home 8 pupusa smached in 2 small containers. Hardly any meat just cheese and under cooked pupusa! . I went to an El Salvadorean bridal shower & that's where I tasted amazing papusas, but I had no idea where to find them locally. UNTIL! I yelped it and found this tiny place on a one-way street with no parking lot adjacent to it. Don't be discouraged! Park on the Main Street or intersection of East Salem and Moore Street, plop a quarter in the meter if you have to.. it's worth every cent! Two hardworking ladies working the large cauldrons of soup and the grill greeted me in Espanol & happily said that I only understood "poquito" but the younger lady does speak English & handed me the menu. I knew I wanted to taste again the queso y frijoles and try the pollo y queso. Then, I asked about the tamales & she confidently said "the elote con crema" without hesistation! I got it to go, but salivating at the thought of hunger and the sight of the lady freshly slapping the dough between her hands & grilling it was insane for me to not open it up NOW & taste it. Beware, those with sensitive thin skin!...The elote is wrapped in a plastic saran wrap & it is ON FIYAH, fresh outta the steamer. The 2 papusas look well cooked with hints of crisp torched cheesiness on the outside and soft, gentle & delish on the inside. To be honest, I don't remember the etiquette of how to eat & prepare papusas, but I just slabbed on the slaw, the red sauce and the crema and stuffed it in my belly. The elote, once cooled down was awesome. It's like eating corn bread- tamales style. Awesome experience. Amazing flavors, fresh, delish papusas cooked to order fresh right in front of you is a seller! Now I gotta bring some great company to this hole-in-the-wall place. I'm glad it's near me AND affordable! Totally, student budget friendly! Sadly, 1 star off, ONLY because the pollo papusa had the end bone and had to spit it out. But I shrugged at it and kept eating. I had a chicken and a cheese pupusa and the tamale. The tamale was extremely dry. The sauce barley helped. I took three bites just to be courteous but nah, it wasn't good at all. The pupusas were ehh. I don't understand the hype and want to believe it was an off day for this place. The horchata was delicious. One of the best I've had and I would return just for it. The waiter was a nice man and was attentive. The place is a small, intimate location. So what really threw me off was the strong smell of bleach halfway through eating. I don't know what they began to clean but the smell was intense. The guys eyes were watery and red and my throat began to hurt and my eyes as well. We had to leave sooner than expected. I was craving pupusas so I came to this place and was not disappointed. Everything was delicious. The pork in the pupusa was fresh; you can tell it wasn't reheated. The cheese mixed with the beans was the perfect consistency. The place is small, and a little bit hidden, but it's clean and the staff is nice. My boyfriend ordered the breaded chicken with rice and beans and he said everything was delicious and filling. I wanted to give this new restaurant a try because I've always been curious to try puposas after always seeing them on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." This location is not very business friendly but I hope this place can change that. The menu is perfect for the area and it's easy to find while walking around. It's located around the corner from the nail salon at Main and Salem streets. Those in cars can park on the street or in the metered lot at Camden and State streets or Berry and State streets. Check out the photos of the menu. The papusas are only $1.50 each, and you can get cheese or meat. Everything is made fresh while you wait. My papusas and order of a corn tamale with red beans took about 10 minutes. The tamale is sweet and smooth. The papusas are amazing. They have charred edges that add a smokey grilled flavor. The tender filling is the perfect amount. I could eat these all day. The cheese was gooey and salty. Dig in your pocket and try the papusas -- you can afford it! The rest of the menu looks rock solid too. I can't wait to try the Salvadorian chicken sandwich. Friendly service inside and a lovely decor. A great addition to the area! Long review* I ordered pupusas from here recently and had a transaction error. They charged me more than double the amount. I called to get a refund for the extra amount charged. The person I spoke with never once apologized, he simply said well we all make mistakes but yeah I'll look into it. He called later that evening and said he couldn't find any transaction that matched my order. I then called my bank to start a claim. I just received a call from this same man- now claiming to be the manager, after I asked to speak to one. The only reason for his call was to complain and ask why I called the bank, insult me and claim I wanted the full refund and free food?? Lol okay bruh not really. Oh and cherry on top, angry I was responding in English, not Spanish. (I speak both) I hardly write reviews but please do yourself a favor, DO NOT waste your money here! Food btw is okay. You can see the women cooking and making the tortillas. The menu has a variety of pupusas and other foods, but I go for the pupusa rellena con pollo o frijol, etc. They are well stuffed and always provide fresh cabbage to put on them. I've ordered a lot of pupusas to go and haven't waited long ever. Eating in is also a comfortable sitting for two, and the prices are fair any given day. Yuca was nicely fried, crispy outside and soft inside. This place is pretty authentic, it's not too Americanized. Everything is fairly priced. Street parking, bring your quarters.
