Qahwah House - dark chocolate cake

I was absolutely letdown by my visit to Qahwah House last night. The service is actually the…read morestrongest point; the staff is very friendly and patient. Since Yemeni coffee and tea options aren't common for everyone, they take the time to explain the menu and answer questions, which I really appreciated. However, the Adeni Chai was the only saving grace of the visit. It was flavorful and well made, but the coffee was a massive disappointment. I tried the Jubani after the staff described it as a delicious light-roasted coffee packed with caffeine, but in reality, it tasted like bland cardamom water with absolutely no coffee flavor or body. It felt like I was just drinking hot spiced water. The atmosphere was also a major issue as there was no seating available whatsoever. The crowd was mostly of Middle Eastern descent and many were incredibly rude; people will bump right into you and not say a word. Even worse was the way some customers spoke to the workers, it was absolutely deplorable. Honestly, who raised you? It was uncomfortable to witness. The dessert selection was even worse. Most of what we ordered felt stale and old. The only thing worth eating was the bubble dessert with cheese because they actually toast it. We tried both the pistachio milk cake and the pistachio dream cake, and neither was impressive. The khattafi in the pistachio dream was the biggest letdown; it was so stale and bland I can't believe they actually put it out to sell when it was clearly weeks if not months old. The basboosa was also a disappointment, as it was a very small square of semolina cake for almost $5. Overall, It is not a good place for coffee or desserts, so if you do go, stick strictly to the Adeni chai.

We decided to come here for an after dinner tea experience in Clifton. Needless to say, the Yemeni…read moretea itself was very flavorful and pungent. The place was packed with a lot of people enjoying their evenings with their families and friends, so that was nice to see. After waiting in line for less than 5 minutes the staff took our order. It came in two cups without dairy but I feel like adding cream would have made it more viscous. We didn't find a table to sit at as it was busy but found a bench to share space. Everyone was super chill and we even were given extra almond oat milk to add. I didn't finish the whole cup but it was a memorable experience.

They also have beautiful garden seating. I ordered Turkish coffee, fresh grapefruit juice, Gurmanski dorucak, mini burek with spinach and cheese, and fruit cake. I love Turkish coffee and this was very good. The juice was tart and delicious. The breakfast platter was a showstopper. Two fried eggs, tomato, feta, two meat patties, and homemade bread. The flavors of the meat blew my mind. Who knew that Croatians make the most delicious burgers. This is a hearty and fantastic dish. Also, the burek was flaky and light and not very mini. I took home the cake and enjoyed it later. Light, delicate and not overly sweet, this was a star. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you should stop in for any meal. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for and you get a lot of bang for your buck. I can't wait to r

Seating is first-come, first-served, and guests are placed based on availability, which keeps things fair and efficient even during busy times. The tables for two are intimate and cozy, perfect for conversation, though they can become a bit tight when ordering several dishes at once. That said, the staff was attentive and checked in often enough to clear plates and make room, which made the experience much more comfortable. The dessert menu is separate, allowing guests to enjoy their meal at an unhurried pace before deciding on something sweet. Their beverage offerings are thoughtfully presented. Herbal tea options include green tea, chamomile, and English tea (Stash), and the tea is served in a container that provides two full servings. The cappuccino is well made and served with a sugar crystal stick, adding a distinct old-world charm that enhances the café's European feel. I regret not asking for an additional order of Turkish coffee so that's a regret . What we ordered: * Greek Salad - $18.50 * Cappuccino - $6.80 * Herbal Tea - $6.00 * Uštipci - $17.25 * Musaka - $22.95 * Šnicla (Cutlet Sandwich) - $20.75 * 2 Diet Cokes - $8.00 The musaka is a baked dish and does take about 25 minutes to prepare, as it's made fresh with baked eggs, seasoned beef, and sliced potatoes layered on top. The wait is well worth it, resulting in a hearty, comforting dish that tastes authentically homemade. The Šnicla (cutlet sandwich) arrived beautifully presented on a wooden board, adding a rustic, elevated touch that matched the restaurant's aesthetic. Mom felt it lacked in seasoning but she Didnt leave any crumbs . The Uštipci were a standout--served with feta and honey, generously portioned, and so plentiful that we happily took some home. We were too full for dessert this time, but it's absolutely on the list for a return visit. Due to winter weather, we couldn't explore the back of the restaurant, but even from the main dining area, the decor is undeniably charming and full of character. Overall, Cafe Bubamara offers authentic flavors, generous portions, attentive service, and a cozy, old-world atmosphere that makes it a place worth revisiting.

He had tried it at a friend's mosque and he says he's been chasing that high ever since. We figured we'd try to get some at Mokafe. It wasn't too difficult to find street parking, but the cafe was surprisingly busy for a late Sunday night. We placed our order for Adeni Shai, Dubai Knafa Brownie, and a Lotus Biscoff croissant. Everything was delicious. I have never had Yemeni tea before so I didn't have a bar to measure it against. I really enjoyed the tea though my friend said it wasn't exactly what he was looking for. I feel like it could've done with more spices but it still tasted very good. The Dubai Knafa Brownie was excellent. The brownie by itself was nice and moist with the perfect texture for a brownie. The Knafa set it over the top with the crunch and pistachio flavor. I'd definitely get this again. The Lotus Biscoff Croissant was good, but I liked the brownie more. It was about an average croissant but the Biscoff spread added some nice flavor to it. I think it could've used more though. It was buttery and flaky; pillars a of what a croissant should be. However, I'd try another pastry before ordering this again. The place is clean, they play great music, and the service is prompt and friendly. Mokafe is a wonderful Coffee House and I'd love to come back.

Part of that is staying up to date on the new spots in town. I had been watching them renovating and did a bit of research. I found that Helvaci Ali has a rich 100 year history and that this is their second US location. All of that was leading me to want to try it and then a coworker that I recommended Paterson to, returned the favor and told me how good Helvaci Ali was after he tried it. That was the push I needed to walk past my usual favorite dessert spot. (If you come to Paterson often, you'll have a favorite of everything) First things that hit me when I walked in with my daughter was the delightful air conditioning, followed by the stunning decor. Absolutely gorgeous navy blue, with decorative touches and great tables/seating. Next thing that we experienced was incredible service, super pleasant and accommodating staff. They provided samples of the helva and it was love at first bite! Pistachio is always a favorite. They made my daughter and I sundaes with pistachio helva, kunefe topping, and Turkish ice cream. So wonderful! The Turkish ice cream has a unique and lovely texture from a slight thickener that helps it stand up to the heat without melting quickly. That made it ideal for the sundae with the helva. What more can I say other than, add it to my list of Paterson favorites!

Some items were enjoyable and clearly rooted in authentic recipes, while others felt a bit inconsistent in texture and sweetness. When it's good, it's quite satisfying, but not everything stood out. The atmosphere is simple and casual, fitting for a quick stop rather than a long visit. Service was polite and efficient, though not especially engaging. Overall, Helvaci Ali is an average experience with moments of quality. With better consistency across the menu, it could easily earn a higher rating.
