Nearly three years and 44 paid service visits later (about $2,160 total), the lawn is in worse shape than when it went in. This isn't just my opinion -- it's documented on Massey's own service reports. On 8/28/2023, their technician noted active chinch bugs and broadleaf weeds. On 5/29/2024, a technician came back for an unscheduled visit and wrote, "Sprayed for heavy weeds in the backyard." On 7/23/2024, the notes say "Retreated needed areas" -- meaning an earlier treatment hadn't worked. On 9/23/2024, the technician wrote that he "talked to my manager about coming out and coming up with a solution for the backyard" because of ongoing brown patches. By 10/16/2024, those brown patches had spread to the front yard too. One report from 6/21/2024 even says, in the technician's own words, "I was also doing your neighbors yard which explains the inaccurate time stamp" -- on my invoice, for my property. I've met in person three to four times with the branch managers about this. Massey advertises a "No-Nonsense, Money-Back Guarantee" with unlimited free service calls and a refund if a problem isn't fixed within 30 days. In my experience, that guarantee has not been honored despite nearly three years of documented, unresolved decline. I'd think carefully before signing up for a long-term lawn program here -- ask to see their actual service notes before you commit, and don't assume repeat visits mean the problem is being fixed. When the work was finally completed, we were left with no grass, no flowers and no plants - pretty much a barren wasteland that looked horrible. As we put the word out to landscape designers, we started to get contacted by several companies wanting to quote the work. Steve from S & L was the first to respond. He was punctual and professional at the estimate appointment, COMPLETELY understood the assignment as we described what we wanted and provided a very reasonable quote for the work we requested (he even provided us with a thorough sketch of our vision the very next day!) This was a marked difference from the other companies - some wanted to charge us just for their plan (!), some had to be chased down for a follow up, some missed their scheduled appointments and others were ridiculously high with their estimates. Throughout the planting/installation process, Steve and his team were in constant communication with us, asking us to check their progress as we moved forward so that we were all on the same page (even offering GREAT suggestions). Hogan's installed sod in our front yard on July 23, 2026 while we were returning from vacation in…read morespite of us specifically requesting that it not be installed until July 24th or later. We wanted to be home to make certain that the ground underneath was tilled or scraped and then top soil spread prior to installation of the sod. We paid for upgraded Scott ProVista St. Augustine sod from Duda & Sons. A few weeks later, after noticing that the grass was turning brown in spite of proper watering, someone from Hogan came and lifted the sod in a few locations and told us that the sod was not taking root and was brown on the underside. We have called repeatedly and asked that someone come and explain what they can do to fix the issue. They've promised that a manager would come out (never happened). Technically they have completed all of the tasks listed in their contract, sod follow-up inspection (this is when the inspector told us the sod had not rooted), irrigation management, follow-up visit by spray tech to apply preventive insecticide and nutrients to develop roots but the grass is still yellow/brown/dead after 5 weeks. We have had ample rain and watered repeatedly Additionally, the sod was installed in such a way that we are unable to open our gate and have asked that they fix that as well. Now they are refusing to take and/or return our calls.

We were told not to mow the new sod, and the company programmed our irrigation system with the watering schedule they recommended. When the sod began turning brown, we were suddenly told to stop watering and start mowing--the exact opposite of the instructions we had been given. We relied on their expertise, and the conflicting guidance contributed to the failure of our lawn. A professional lawn care company later assessed the sod and determined it appeared to have been diseased prior to installation. Despite this, we were told the sod was only covered under warranty if we had purchased an "optional" treatment add-on. If that treatment is necessary to ensure healthy sod, it should be included in the installation price--not sold as an extra. We paid for professional installation and expected healthy sod and consistent guidance. Instead, we received a defective product, contradictory instructions, and no accountability. *We were offered to pick up pieces of leftover sod - not feasible. *The comment left on PJ's below said to wait until October - that's not feasible either if you had a drain field replaced and would be dealing with a dirt field for a front yard for months. *If you go with these guys, get the treatment and hold them accountable. They will try to talk their way out of owning responsibility or any effort for service recovery. Very disappointed.
