Pret A Manger is a fun little place to get a quick meal. I first ate at one on my last day in Paris a couple years ago. I was impressed with the quality of meat and bread at this fast casual restaurant in Paris. After eating one too many Italian meals in New York City, I wanted something light. I was happy to see this restaurant in the city. I'm not sure how long they've been here but I don't remember them the last time I was in New York a few years ago. Anyway, you actually grab your sandwich or salad and pay at the register. However, the food is still fresh! There were a couple of employees going up and down the stairs constantly refilling the sandwiches and salads. They're freshly made just before they are brought up. I was happy to see the ham and cheese sandwich I had had in Paris. It was just as good at this location. The meat is very high quality and much better than many sandwich places at home in Florida. I also bought a bag of salt and vinegar chips which were excellent. I am a chip fanatic, especially salt and vinegar and these fit the bill. Plus, I loved the pretty packaging. Huge location, tons of seating space, quick and efficient service, corner of the block prime for gazing out the glass windows to watch by-passers or ponder life, and best of all, its salads, soups, sandwiches, and bowls are always fully stocked! If you're there during the late afternoon, you get the most gorgeous reflection of the sunset in the intersection. I got the Moroccan lentil soup today along with a coffee with almond milk. Soup was hot and fresh, and tasted amazing, especially with salt and pepper added in. It's also very healthy and has a significant amount of protein for such a low-calorie item. Coffee was also hot and delicious - not too bitter. WiFi is fast and the location is clean and quiet. This is definitely one of my favorite new Prets in the city. read more

Is it just me or is this side of the park so much for "classier" than the other part? No shade to the other part of the park, but the T is that this side of the Union Square is better. Cut to The Pret located here on Bway, across the street from Petco where I buy treats for my sweet Teddy. If I need (yes need) a snack, lunch, or coffee, I will usually stop at Pret for a sandwich or soup. I know it's a chain but Pret has THE best coffee of any chain. It's organic and it's always good. This location is my usual goto, but after what I witnessed today I think I'll stop coming here. I witnessed the cashier, older Caribbean woman mocking someone with an asian accent although they were obviously asking coherent sentences. The asian woman bought a bunch of soups and asked for the free bread, and the cashier said coldly "60 cents." The asian woman politely says "oh but other locations are free," and the cashier responds angrily "I WORK HERE, YOU DONT THINK I KNOW ANYTHING." I was like thinking the cashier could have been more diplomatic by saying something like "sorry we charge for bread now." But it ended with the asian woman saying "you know what I'll pack it myself, dont want you touching, my food, I'm going report you to corporate." Love love love this spot! Such a nice addition to the area for something on the go and not totally unhealthy. The salads are fresh and really tasty as is most everything else here. I thought it was reasonably priced and the portions were good. I had a very seasonal salad with beets and fall roasted veggies which really hit the spot. The staff were very good, we had a large party and they were really polite and accommodating. I felt a little bad we had children and literally swarmed them looking for food after having explored all morning but they were great. Love the space -- very large, open, natural light from the huge windows, plenty of seating. Spinach, artichoke grilled cheese-- not a lot of filling, so mostly bread, but tasty overall. Orange mango juice -- sweet and tasted mostly like orange juice. Very light hint of mango, if any. Peach green tea juice -- Very sweet, mostly peach tasting, could not taste much green tea. Good place to grab a quick bite and drink on the go, or leisurely rest/ boot up the laptop with a coffee. read more

Looking for an eating place that's open before 10 am and stumbled on this place. They have miso soup (though without tofu) and hot chocolate too. Their sandwiches are fresh and doesn't get sold the next day (if the packaging is to be believed). Their staff was kind enough to help me bring our orders to our table. I looked at yelp to see the closing time as I knew I had a lot of work to do online but apparently it was closing an hour earlier than posted... Some of the staff are very likely to get busy chatting, then forget to hand you your espresso drink, but you can pay with the app now and that's helpful. Make sure to get your receipt for the wifi password and bathroom code, otherwise you will be stuck asking about them multiple times. I am not the biggest fan of this location. My favorite place to stop by when I'm in Union Square. If you see a long line, it typically moves fast and the expected time to wait for your turn is usually less than 5 minutes. I would not recommend you use this place to study if you're looking for a quiet area as some days (like today) the atmosphere can be loud and busy. I love Pret for its preprepared food displays and self serve coffee area where you can grab whatever you want and then pay for your stuff. The servers are nice. They'll greet you and ask (after you've paid) if you would like a bag with your food. Wifi is free. I usually have trouble logging in to the wifi under Pret 1st Floor, but the wifi under the name Pret A Manger works fine. Bathroom upstairs does not require a password or key, but the downside is sometimes it's locked for reasons I'm unsure of. Edit: although the bathroom was open to anyone at the time I wrote this review, I recently went there again and now the bathroom is only open to customers. read more

This chain always has a nice, clean contemporary look. This store has lots of exposed brick and high ceilings. It's not high design but it's nice. There is plenty of seating. My cappuccino was made quickly and was fine. But the real reason to come here is for the absolutely perfect pastries. Croissants are crisp on the outside and soft and flaky inside. The pain au chocolate had the right flavor and amount of dark chocolate ribbon inside. These are authentic and delicious. read more

***PROBLEM SOLVED*** Very responsive management and great crew of people here! And the WORST CASHIERS in the World Award goes to Pret's 821 Broadway at 12th Street, NYC location. I bought a sandwich today, paid by credit card, and asked for a bag and receipt 3 times. Each time, the cashier told me to wait and went off to talk to another cashier. Then he came back and tried to charge me for the sandwich again. When I told him I had already paid, he said it didn't go through when it had. Then he got a female cashier to take his side. She told me to pay again and if there was a problem with the charges, they could fix it later. I said I wanted to speak to a manager, but she refused. She then asked me to show her my credit card bill proving that I had been double charged because she was dumb as F**K. I told her that I would pay again, but I wanted it in writing that it should only be one charge. She refused. Finally an authority figure came along and told them to give me the sandwich for "free." And by "free" that meant FULL PRICE. A 100% markup to get a bag is quite a scam. Now, in all fairness, some of the other staff members are the best people I have ever met. Pret is an amazing cafe serving you're everyday needs. I personally go their every morning for my coffee since it is organic and that is difficult to find. They also offer almond milk which is amazing to see too since dairy is so horrible for the human body. Pret also sells an array of oatmeals, soups, breakfast sandwiches, fruits, trail mixes and many other vegan options. They also sell chicken, eggs, and other non vegan options. Hopefully they will offer more plant based options in the near future and open stores in Long Island as well. Thanks pret, you make my morning great. read more

This Pret has lots of space, and the communal tables mean that there's usually space because people don't like sitting near one another. I love their yogurt pots of gold, even though it's the price of a tub of yogurt. The sandwiches are small for their size. All the food is very fresh. The staff is very friendly and efficient! This location is beautiful. It has spacious and has windows on two sides of the business since it sits on a corner. There is outdoor seating and free wifi. The food is definitely above par. I personally love their roasted beef, arugula & parmesan Baguette. However, the decor there makes this my favorite lunch/coffee spot in New York. I'll stop at any Pret A Manager for a sandwich, but I will sit at this location for hours drinking coffee and watching people browse the outdoor books at Strand Bookstore. It is obvious. Yes it's a Pret. Yes it's "fast casual" dining (because the restaurant industry loves naming their subtypes like New York names their neighborhoods - needlessly and with made up titles that don't make any sense). But sometimes it's worth reviewing chains because each one has something different to offer thanks to the people behind each door. Stopped in here on my way home (technically I walked a block out of my way) desperate for a cool drink and they were all out of my favorite. The cashier felt my pain and graciously joined in on my needless drama and humor after a long day. I like to think we bonded. All this to say, sometimes, a place like this isn't about the drinks (they are pretty good - I like the chais and black teas for something warm) or the sandwiches (the grab and go section is great in a pinch), it's about the friendly cashier who laughs with you about lemonade (the beverage kind, not the Beyonce kind) after a long day/week. Best dark roast coffee in union sqaure. However my poor rating is due to the manager. During lunch I left my cell phone on the counter. I was about 2 minutes away when i realized what I did. I ran back to the location hoping to retrieve my phone. And thankfully so, the individual that assisted me, turned in my phone to the manager. When I approached the manager, he had (within the 2-5min it took me to return) turned off my phone and turned off the ringer. Apparently he was "logging" it in a book. If it was being "logged" into a book, for safe keeping. Why would he turn off my phone and turn off the ringer? Logically I would call my phone since i lost it. Hoping to pick it up as I did.
