Made…read moreless clear is that the people behind the chain are those responsible for Taylor St Baristas, and as a result, the coffee at Harris + Hoole is far superior to what you might otherwise expect. Apparently they won best UK coffee chain at the 2014 European Coffee Awards and I can believe that. I certainly can't think of any other major chain that can compete with what you can get at Harris & Hoole. The location of this Harris + Hoole in the massive Tesco Extra in Slough magnifies the incongruousness. There are the shelves containing the coffee making equipment (Aeropress, V60, Clever Dripper, Hario grinder, even Harris + Hoole branded KeepCups) that one sees at all 'serious' cafes. The refillable filter coffee marketed as 'drip' filter coffee. And the superb-value, excellent espresso - a 'small', 8 oz flat white costs £2.30, and sizes go all the way up to 12 oz. There are some corners cut. There's only one blend of coffee (Union), as you might expect from a large chain (but not at an independent). The filter coffee, while refillable, isn't anywhere near the quality of drip/Aeropress coffee in independent stores, perhaps because the coffee used isn't as well-suited. Still, overall, I am most certainly a fan. It's one thing to cash in on the coffee craze by lazily churning out sub-standard lattes for 'artisan' prices as too many opportunist independents and coffee chains do. It's quite another to, as I think Harris + Hoole do, use their in-depth knowledge of the trade to make good coffee significantly more accessible to all. I declare Harris + Hoole to be a force for good.

The people here have an educated thoughtful intelligence I would expect to find in a high level science lab, they also have a fear of culture and creativity to go with the eclectic things they serve. They do both tea and coffee which I would have thought is too diverse, but they are so good that here it works. They also have creativity in the way that they put the leaves in a special container to brew, place it on top of the cup and then bring it to a table where it goes into the glass. This place is expensive, but it is a nice place to be. The stuff they do is good but it is more the sense of occasion that makes it worthwhile and justifies the high price. This place is quite a bit more expensive than the chains, but has the class and sophistication to give it value. If you are in the area, want to escape some of the crungy staff and want a bit of modern class, this is the place for you! I will probably return, maybe many times.

The so-called coffee was practically transparent--it couldn't even be called coffee. I'm sure the Mocha was made the same way. When we asked why the coffee looked so bad, we were told it had "a lot of water," but in reality, it was just old leftovers from another coffee. Another employee--a young man--remade the coffee, and this time it actually tasted like coffee. However, they didn't replace the Mocha. The person who originally made our coffee had a rude and arrogant attitude, insisting that the coffee was fine in her opinion. From the very beginning, the service was terrible. I live in this area, but I will never step foot in this place again. Avoid this cafe, you'll be extremely disappointed!

We ordered a bunch of meat and seafood for the BBQ : my highlights were the kalbi beef (rib eye) the baby octopus and the spicy pork. I love the kimchee platters, kimchi rice and veggie japchae (potatoes glass noodles) If you re in the Richmond area, I highly recommand this place, service is really good. When we were seated, our server recommended us a few popular plates, including the bulgogi dish and Oppa BBQ special, as I had mentioned to him that this was our first time here. He said customers usually order an individual BBQ plate to cook on the table and then a side dish (usually rice or noodles). We ordered the bulgogi, brisket beef, chicken fried rice and assorted kimchi platter. As soon as the food came out, my husband began cooking the meat on the table grill and this part of the meal was such a fun experience for him! Both the brisket and bulgogi were well seasoned and we both loved the kimchi platter. The fried rice was pretty good too and each portion was big enough for one. We also took a look at the other tables and their food looked equally appetizing. Empty plates are a good indicator of yummy food! Our meal turned out to be £30 for two people - a great dinner for its price! Pro tip: Be sure to ask for an additional tongs so that more than one person can handle the cooking on the table. The pastries are taken out of their plastic packets and then left to go stale. The takeaway cups leak spectacularly. Oh, and staff who ask if you'd like sugar. What's that about? If I want it, I'll put it in myself, thanks. All in all, a total disappointment. The walk to the DLR is now made worse by the sight of what COULD have been a great addition to a morning routine.

I love seeing the dogs and the local community gather here; it's such a special little cafe and park.

The cafe attracts a loyal clientele of families, students and visitors and I always enjoy it. This weekend, I had a really lovely flat white for £1.30 (a Gaggia machine loaned by Rich Coffee apparently) and my friend bought me some delicious sticky toffee pudding, which came heated up and made with cream. All of the cakes etc are made by volunteers, then there's stuff like soup made from the Park greenhouse's veg, a good list of ice creams, home-made sandwiches and so on. There was also a help yourself book stand. It got a bit embarrassing after a while, as I bought something before my friend rocked up, we went back to get her something, then came back again after lunch. There are benches to sit at, and of course, the bandstand. In December, I came to the Park Christmas carols, and the cafe did mulled wine and mince pies. Fab.
