I had an appointment to meet Beth Baker to go over arrangements for my father's remains It was me, my husband,my son and my sister who met with Beth. When Beth came into the conference room, I introduced myself as I had talked to her on the phone. Beth introduced herself and sat down and started in with her "questionnaire", barely glancing up and did not even ask who anyone else was. However, before proceeding, I took it upon myself to introduce our family to Beth. She asked us to tell her about our father, so we started to share what a great father he was, Beth did not engage but redirected us to her questionnaire. Beth was methodical and curt the entire time. I'm not sure warmth and compassion is something that can be taught, but if so, I would encourage Beth get signed up for that class. I've had to reach out to Beth to get things moving more than once. It would been more professional and appreciated had Beth simply taken the initiative to either send a quick e-mail or phone call providing status ... it seemed Beth saw just an old man who died and their faceless family. I even reached out to the owner, Jesse Partington, but did not even hear back from him. Beth sent an e-mail with an "I'm sorry " followed up with excuses for herself. Our memories of dealing with dad's final moments are, sadly, forever tainted by Preston Schilling. read more

When my father passed away recently, it was my first time being responsible for planning a funeral, so I really had no idea what to do. Preston-Schilling's staff was so helpful and sensitive; they made it as simple and as low-stress as possible. It was obvious that they really care about their clients. I heard that in particular, they were good at doing veterans' funerals, and my Dad was a veteran so that was a part of why I chose them. Becky a wonderful woman helped my sister & I finally get some peace, she was able to correct an issue from another funeral home we had used in 2016. As embarrassing as this sounds never having dealt with a loss of a parent, we assumed because our father was buried at Chapel Hill Gardens we would have to go through that funeral home. We did & it was a nightmare. No closure for over 2 years, now after just a few phone calls & dealing with an honest & caring business we have found closure. I can't thank Becky enough for her care, sympathy & all around concern for our issues, without her help we would have been lost. I highly recommend their services to anyone in need. As a correction, the formal business name is "Preston-Schilling Funeral Home." When the Schillings were involved in this business the service was exemplary, complete with the pride, kindness, attention to detail and loving compassion suited to assist any family taking the difficult steps in saying a final farewell to a loved one. I wish I could say this was my family's experience when my grandma passed away last weekend. The service we received was not befitting of what my grandma deserved. When my grandpa passed in 2001 all was as it should be; however, this week we were not provided with anywhere near the level or standard of care. They printed the wrong passing date for my grandfather in the original obituary. This was information they pulled from their own records. There was not any transport for the pallbearers and there was not any organized escort to the cemetery. My grandma was clear in her wishes for a closed casket; however we had a private family viewing one last time just before the visitation. That was one reason they recommended and we chose, per their recommendation, not to embalm her body. In seeing her for the last time, she looked like herself from the nose up, yet the funeral parlor didn't even preserve her smile. They did not offer any 'additions' such as jewelry or remembrance tokens, which they indicate they can do for those who are cremated. After the fact, when we had to return to request the correct information for my grandfather be updated in the obituary, we inquired as to her facial expression, which was a grimace and not a look I have ever seen my grandmother portray. They stated they could only create a peaceful look or smile on her face if she had been embalmed. This would have been important information to share as we would have paid any fee to see my grandma's grin one last time. They also told us after the fact that they could have created keepsakes with her fingerprints. My grandma was famous for her Christmas thumb print cookies... to have her thumbprint memorialized would have been priceless (the most endearing aspect of one of the famous Master Card commercials), yet it is now forever lost. The level of communication and service at this funeral home has declined to a point that it leaves me with a hollow and sick feeling in my heart and stomach. My hope is that this review will create a change in the business and improve the experience of those encountering this inevitable life moment in the future. Unfortunately in Dixon, there are few choices; however, there is a choice. This week I wish we had made a different choice. read more
