Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of witnessing this place in its heyday. Nonetheless, after being taken here on a rather strange first date some years ago, I have fallen in love with the place.
It's easy to miss - even if you are specifically looking out for it. Though, others who have been there once and have a better memory and sense of direction than me will probably be able to relocate it quickly enough on repeat visits. It's tucked away off of George Street (if you're walking away from George Square), amongst the land of new builds.
Perhaps, it's this setting which makes it all the more lovable. It looks very much 'old man pub' from the sign above the door and the collection of older gentlemen smoking by the doorway. Inside, it's not much different, there's only a few tables situated at the back, directly behind the bar (the pub kind of revolves around the bar - excellent!). While, most of the drinkers (and most of them are older men) stand cluttered around the bar.
It does have a full bar, but my real reason for frequenting here is to treat myself to a generous helping of good whisky at a great price. Needless to say, male friends often have a pint along side this.
This is a great, wee traditional pub which is surprisingly friendly. If you can find it, it's definitely worth a visit. read more
