I would be on the way to posting a four to five star review of Begeman were it not for an unexpectedly poor bit of customer service that's prompted me to go engagement ring shopping elsewhere. I've been working with Bill H. to buy an engagement ring and until now, he was fairly helpful, walking me through any misunderstanding I had of elements of the 4 Cs of diamond buying, explaining the pros and cons of gold and platinum mountings, etc. We were moving forward with the purchase of a particular ring and ran into some trouble finding the right diamond to match the designer's specs. At this point, Bill showed me several stones he had on-hand. One of these was a diamond without papers. I thought I could find a better price online and consequently went home to do some research. Finding one on the Solomon Brothers website, I brought the listing back in to have Bill validate that the diamond's symmetry, weight, and other features, etc., were both adequate and would match the ring in question. When I came back in, Bill seemed a bit shorter than before, but I put this subtle change in behavior down to a bad night of sleep. No big deal. After a quick review, we ordered the diamond from Solomon Bros. Later in the day, I got a call from Solomon informing me that that listing had already been sold. I went to James Allen instead, found a more or less equivalent stone, and called Bill to have him quickly look at the new listing so I could go ahead and order the diamond. At this point, over the phone, Bill told me that he couldn't do it at the moment and that he probably wouldn't have time for the rest of the day (the shop closes at 6, leaving 2 full hours for him to look). He actually stated "I can't keep going back and forth." He demurred on taking a look at that diamond listing until late Monday. Given his petulant tone and the fact that the shop was more or less devoid of customers my previous three visits, I had trouble believing that Bill was actually this occupied; I think he was simply being passive aggressive and trying to communicate that he didn't want to help. I think that's a bit rude given that a diamond purchase is, well, kind of important. I was unaware that asking for a jeweler to validate that a certain stone is what a certain mounting calls for places too great a demand on his time. My total money spent would have been between $5 and 6K. Perhaps this amount doesn't merit good customer service? Alternatively, maybe Bill was just unhappy that I wasn't interested in purchasing his paper-less stone. In any case, I think Bill and by extension Begeman acted unprofessionally. read more

You know, I used to love this place. I've been shopping with them for a long long time, way back to when they were in the city. The reason I am giving it a bad review is a two fold thing... The first thing is that I bought a Seiko watch there some years back. Every time I brought it in there they said because I bought it there the batteries were free. The last couple of times they weren't, even when I mentioned that I bought it there they said they didn't have this policy. It's just bad customer service. They could just tell me that they no longer do that or whatever but they made me look like I was a liar. The second reason, and a really big deal... even after the battery thing, when looking for an engagement ring I took my wife here. She had seen something she liked someplace else, but I told her we needed to try this place first. She saw a ring that she thought she liked, but not as much as the first one. So, I started asking questions. What kind of clarity the diamond had? What was the cut? The woman seemed very unhappy to be there at that moment. Which is weird, this is her job. I wasn't asking anything she shouldn't know. Then I asked her the same question I asked every other place and was shocked. Where did the diamond come from, she shrugged her shoulders... and said we buy our diamonds from the cutter. I said ok, so was this diamond obtained from a source that is conflict free... She shrugged again. So I was taken aback by that and asked again. Was this diamond obtained from a conflict free source? NO! Enough said... do a google search for blood diamonds and you'll see that people have to smuggle these diamonds away from their government which kill them if they find out. Not only that the mines they get the diamonds from are vicious and pay there people almost nothing. It's a horrible market. If somebody can't promise conflict free in my eyes they are murders too. read more

My girlfriend and I went here to choose an engagement ring in the Summer 2018. Throughout the process of choosing a metal, band style, size, and diamond everyone in the shop was extremely helpful and had our best interests in mind. The pro's and con's of each choice at each step of the process were very thoroughly explained, sometimes several times when we needed it, and everyone there was always happy to do so. They were happy to craft a ring that fit our price point and timeframe and at no point did they attempt to sell us anything we didn't want or need. I even had to expedite ordering the ring at short notice and they were able to accommodate everything we needed. We'll be going here to get our wedding bands and every other piece of jewelry in the foreseeable future. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

I needed some custom work done on both my husband's (then fiance) wedding band and my wedding and engagement band set, and the people at Begeman's did a great job and were very accommodating and reasonable. Is there a score lower than 1 star? Let me explain. My husband and I have been frequenting Begeman's since we moved to the area 27 years ago. We've used them for everything from watch repair to jewelry purchases. Today I walked in with a watch for repair and noticed that there were 5 people ahead of me. No problem; one left and two others were being helped. There was then just myself and one lady before me. I had walked in at 2:50 (I know because I looked at my watch to check their hours), the clock in the store chirped 3:00. No one had acknowledged the two of us who had been standing there for the past ten minutes--not a"be right with you", "go away", not even a head nod! After twenty minutes of no acknowledgement, I left, AND I won't be back! If a minimum of a greeting would have even been given I would have just said that I would come back another day, but to completely ignore customers is not the way to run a business.It's not like there are no other jewelers around--maybe they'll appreciate the business. read more

I went to Bella Cosa to ask them to take a few links out of a watch I had just purchased. The staff recognized me because we have been good customers for years. The woman that waited on me told me that they they no longer do anything same day. I asked, not even a 2-minute job of taking a few links out of a watch band? The woman confirmed, no, not even for that---that their staff is just too busy for any same day work. I asked for my watch back, & told her I would go somewhere else. That's not how you treat long-time good customers. I went to Begeman's and they were happy to do it right away. I'm so glad I discovered Begeman's. Later that same day, I brought them my husband's watch that needed a battery replacement, & they did it right away. While waiting, I saw a watch in their jewelry case that I liked better than the one I brought in to remove links, and bought it. They gave me a 20% discount & removed the links I needed right away. I also brought them a beaded bib necklace with multiple strands that I had bought at a fair on vacation & asked them to make three long necklaces out of it, with tassels. They did it within one day, & for a very reasonable price. (This is something Bella Cosa & another place--Orlando's in Lombard would not do for me). I have been a Begeman's customer for over ten years. It is small and unpretentious, yet they have some beautiful and unusual colored gems. Over the years I have seen sapphires of all colors-- including purple and green, alexandrite, Mexican fire opal, mandarin garnet, blue zircon and Pariba tourmaline. They also carry many beautiful diamonds and more well known colored stones. I bought a beautiful emerald pendant last year that I wear every day. I have been to many other jewelry stores in the area and I don't think anyone can beat Begeman's prices. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their merchandise-- I have always had good experiences at this store and will continue to be a Begeman's customer. read more
