Their mushroom soup was very bland and had a weird texture. I also grabbed a cookie and it was very mushy in the middle. There was a weird bitter chunk of I think baking powder or baking soda. I chose a Turkey club planning to pick the bacon off but it was chopped really tiny and weirdly wet and mushy, spread over the bread? I can't really hold that against them it was on me for ordering it but I didn't expect bacon to look like that. The bread had a god chew but was really bland. This place used to be great, I loved their mushroom sandwich. When they took it off the menu I quit coming. I am really bummed that the quality dropped so much. They had the "fancy" donuts, you know the ones that people get creative with cereals and stuff. No plain every day donuts. I got the apple fritter. It had cherries in it, I didn't know that. The 2 ladies that were there were super sweet. There is some seating inside and outside. And you can see the old architecture of the building inside and out which makes it fun. They are only open 6am-2pm. Will need to go back and try their pizza as I was not impressed with the donut.

Owner Jim Sparks is a wonderful man, and they are a strong community supporter. Their family has operated the business for more than 40 years. My apple fritter was the best I have ever enjoyed, and we decided that it was definitely worth the 45-minute ride! They also have great donuts and cookies, plenty of indoor seating, and historic Winterset photos. This is a jewel. Visit it; you'll love the entire experience.

That would be for my 5 AM wake up (home and away) to tide my over before breakfast with Dad around 8 AM. This Bakery has a lot of room and seating, and it's a bit of a walk to the counter. As we were here mid-afternoon, selection was more limited, but still tempting. I would have preferred a scone over a donut (because the former is "healthier"?), but my choice was either going to be the later with white frosting or a long john. And what I chose was delicious the next morning.
