I'm an online shopper because I don't like dealing with crowds and people. I'm not against brick and mortar stores, but I tend to be able to find everything I want on Nordstrom, Shopbop, ASOS, Anthropologie.com and so on. After a pretty terrible day I decided to drown my sorrows in a cupcake from SusieCakes, and as I was walking to SusieCakes, I noticed Prairie. It was 5:15 on a Wednesday, and I marveled that a local store was open past five. "That's nice! I'll stop in!" As I walked in I saw a couple of scarves I liked and a few things I thought might make good Christmas gifts. I was also pleased to see one of my favorite perfumes I usually get from Anthropologie (Go Be Lovely Coconut Milk) for sale. I was ready to buy. There were two employees in the store (older woman and college aged girl). They spoke to one another and never greeted or looked at me. I made my way around the store. They carried on with their conversation, and then the older woman said, "Okay, I've gotta go. I'll be back." She literally brushed against me as I walked by. It was at that moment that I knew I would never give this store my money. The girl at the counter didn't say boo as I walked out. I haven't been ignored in SUCH a long time while shopping at store. Even when I bought a Chanel purse in Paris this summer I was treated like a human being. People are always saying citizens should shop local and support local businesses, but if THIS is what it means to shop local, I'll have no part of it. If you were greeted and treated with respect, congratulations! Achievement unlocked. read more

I went to the store with the intent to buy some gifts for my wife and daughter, but the store owner (on her phone) and her staff where very unhelpful, a but rude and a bit condescending. As a 20 + year San Carlos resident, I want to support local businesses, but the way I was treated... they will never get my business and I would encourage anyone to look other options. read more

Cute little boutique shop located right in the heart of Downtown San Carlos. I was scrambling to find a last minute Christmas gift for a few people and happened to wander into this store. The ladies working here are really sweet and were able to give me some suggestions on what to purchase. When I finally made my selections, they gift wrapped everything for me into these cute packaged boxes, making my job much easier. However, they did forget to take the price tag off several of the items so I had to go through and double check everything before giving it to the recipients. In addition, their gift receipts are only good for 7 days post purchase. Since a couple of the recipients did not receive their gifts until the following week, it was too late for them to come here to make an exchange had they wanted to. read more

It's a women's clothing store, so why was I there? My wife asked me to return overpriced shoes she bought a few days earlier. So here I am walking in with my toddler daughter and asking the cashier to take the unworn shoes back. Surprise - they don't accept returns but would give me a store credit. This on its own is a good enough reason to never return, but what do I know about boutiques women shops... Anyway, I have no choice so I said sure, give me the store credit and I'll go away. The young cashier proceeds to play with the register for about 10 or so minutes with no success. Finally, she informs me that she doesn't know how to put a store credit on a gift card and tells me that the owner will be back soon. At this point, I am very irritated because I didn't get over $100 back and still at the store with no line sight of getting out. At some point, while waiting, I've asked the girl "Are you treating all customers like that?". Afterwhile I just went to sit on the couch to wait for the owner to process the return. 10 minutes later the owner casually strides in and after a short conversation with the girl comes to me asking if I am the guy returning the shoes. As I come to register she asks me if I was rude to her daughter (turns out that young clueless cashier is her daughter who just graduated from college and came to work at the store). My reply was - I haven't said anything offensive, but I do expect cashiers to be able to do two things - sell things and take returns. There is nothing else she is expected to do at the store and if she cannot perform either one of those two duties perhaps she should be better trained or not be left alone at all. Mind you, my tone is calm, polite and civil. I did let the owner know that the level of service at her store is way below expectations. As I was speaking to the owner she started to give me an attitude almost cursing me. I still remained my composure and the position that the service should have been better. Then she flips on me and saying that instead of store credit she will return my money on the credit card because she doesn't want to see me in her store. YES!!! I am so happy because there is nothing my wife would ever buy from her again anyway. So I just keep my mouth shut, let her do her thing (another 5 -10 minutes) and just walk away while that woman is still talking... Bottom line - IMHO - this is an overpriced store with mediocre clothing at best. The owner has a distorted sense of reality and has to train her staff on how to do the basic tasks. And the fact that her college-educated daughter cannot handle a tiny level of dissatisfaction is just too sad. read more

I had quite the shopping let down in the city this weekend. I was on a search for something to wear on my birthday. What. . .I have no idea. All I know is I didn't find anything. After visiting the same ole mall scene, Burlingame, and even a horrible shop in Half Moon Bay, I was really getting bummed out! "Well honey why don't you wear something you already have?" Some boys just don't understand! Ok. . .lets try San Carlos! YEAH!!! I found a super cute top at Prairie, and the sales girl was super sweet. We were able to work out a great look! This is a good spot for unique pieces. It may be a little pricey, but when it's special you will wear it again! BTW. . .I guess Wranglers are back in! I had no idea! read more

I was happy to find a clothing store in San Carlos with clothing I like. I found a sweater I wanted but didn't have time to try it on and usually prefer to do so at home. While the salesperson was processing the sale I asked her what the return policy is. I had her repeat it twice and definitely got the impression that it could be returned for a credit card credit within 7 days. Today I returned the sweater well within the 7 days only to have the woman who I am sure is the owner tell me in a very clipped voice that she was giving me a credit to my card but she didn't need to do so because the policy is NO credit card credits at all. When I questioned her about this she said more than once "Your Welcome" which came across as condescending since I hadn't thanked her and wasn't finished commenting on what I had been told earlier. I asked her if there was a sign near the desk alerting a buyer that it could only be returned for store credit and she said no, and thanked me again in the clipped voice for my "advice". She had said earlier "it's on the receipt" which is no notice to the consumer after the fact of the purchase. Not sure I would recommend the store unless purchases will definitely not be returned or you're a regular and know you'll always be able to find something else. The owner needs an attitude adjustment, and a sign at the desk with the policy clearly stated. read more

I really do like this store, but I honestly haven't found much that fits me correctly here or compels me to 'have' to have it. I'm a thinner, shorter girl with a larger bust, so I have to be careful to balance out the ladies in everything I wear. The one thing they do have, that I will continue to come back for: Odd Molly clothing. I haven't found this great European/Nordic designer anywhere and you can't purchase their clothing online. Although, Odd Molly does run larger, you can still have a piece tailored and they are very unique and different - I have never seen anyone wearing this stuff so I also really like the idea of having pieces no one else has. I'll continue to give it more chances as my parent's live relatively close, but as of now, it's just okay. read more

Very cute clothes... but at very high prices. Don't get me wrong - most of them are great brands and are worth it - but some are mosdef not. I peaked at a jersey blend dress that was at the same level (quality/production wise) as Forever 21, but it was $230. I will save my visits to Prairie on occasions for when I feel like a little splurge for myself. read more

Ok, the help is young but sooo sweet. They have great stuff and great stuff on sale. They even sell their chandeliers! I love that this city-like store is in the burbs. Love the brands. I would like to also comment that the store is dark and smells too strongly of parfume. I hope they read this and add some lighting. It drives me nuts. read more

I WILL NEVER SHOP IN THIS STORE AGAIN! The clothes are cute, but the manager is one of the rudest people I have ever met. They make you feel like you are truly bothering them when you have a question. They are not helpful with suggestions either. It's basically, look around, find what you like and if they aren't too irritated, they may put it in a room for you. No question, my money is going elsewhere. I love this place! And not just because they are so nice and adorable! I import high-end Argentine leather handbags and went there to "check out" the merchandise to see if my product would be a good fit (it is!!). Before I could announce myself as a prospective vendor the owner, Susan, cheerfully introduced herself to me and welcomed me to her new store! What a breath of fresh air! She has done a fabulous job of buying mainstream brands and mixing it with lesser-known labels to create a wonderfully eclectic selection. Ohhh how I wish I could afford to buy all the things I wanted from this store. I love love love this new boutique in my little town. Clair de Lune is bigger but Prairie is quainter and more my style. They are SO very nice in there. Everything is beautiful and drapey and cozy and I want it all! The prices are a little high but that's just compared to my shopping budget. this store has the worst workers. They are too young and always have an attitude. They wont even stop a conversation just to say a friendly Hello. The clothes are also WAYYY overly priced and they aren't even very cute. I bought a shirt there and I wore it the next night and a button immediatly fell off. This shirt was one of the many overly expensive things in the store that i refuse to buy anymore of & Plus the store is way to crowded. they are tryinng to put too much clothing into such a small place... Clair de lune has a MUCH better selection and it is just down the street. read more

Stopped here on our "window Shopping" excursion today and loved the place. It smelled great when we walked in (I'm a sucker for great ambiance). I found lots of things to add to my "wish" list of items. I loved their selection of jeans and they had the best candles (hence the wonderful aroma). I absolutely love this store! It's my first place to go when I want to splurge and find something really special. They have great clothes that you really feel you can only find there. Everyone is really friendly and kind and I always feel that my shopping experience there is great. I have bought several pieces from this store. The quality of the clothing is good and they have great brands. Every once in a while when they want to clear out inventory, they have killer sales where everything in the store is at least 50% off! I always check the sale racks too because I have found many pieces that work for me hanging up in there. The price point of the clothing is on the higher end, but if you are looking for something more on the one-of-a-kind scale, then this is your place. The store has a great ambiance too. My friend and I stopped in this store after having lunch along Laurel Street. We were really just browsing but both left with super cute and super affordable dresses from the brand Theme. This is what I love about small boutique stores - they introduce you to brands that you would otherwise not know about. The store itself is small but quaint. It carries a good selection - some of which is too expensive for my taste, but it seems to do a good job at offering clothing in different price ranges. And the salesgirl was very helpful - pointing out sale items and getting us different sizes. read more

Wow!!! What a great experience! I walked in to Prairie at 4:30pm desperately searching for the "perfect" dress. I was assisted by Diane who personally guided me through the store and found THE dress! I left 30 minutes later and was off to my party feeling totally satisfied that I had a unique, stylish, and wonderfully comfortable dress to wear through the holiday season.
