This iconic building was completed in 1984 for PPG Industries, a 100-year-old company that was founded and based in Pittsburgh. PPG, which stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass, began as a glass company, and they paid homage to their past by covering the building complex in nearly 20,000 pieces of the company's glass. We did not get a chance to go top of the building (i am not even sure whether it's open for the public or not) but we were downtown, exploring the area, and saw this square and just like WTC, they have marked 1 PPG, 2 PPG... It is the third tallest building in Pittsburgh and the tenth tallest in Pennsylvania. The building is topped by its iconic glass spires which give the building a very interesting appearance.

Very unusual buidling downtown .. looks like a glass castle. rather lovely. We didn't have a chance to see inside or the view from the higher towers.

Beautiful building. Beautifully decorated for Christmas this year. From the outdoor ice skating rink to the immense Ginger Bread House collection inside. Christmas trees everywhere. Santas from all around the world on display. Such a nice place to visit around the holidays.

What a lovely futuristic enclave these Towers are - whimsical in design with those castle turrets and yet the engineering behind the glass building is cutting edge and I really like that architectural play of contrasts. I only ever saw the buildings at night time, and my first thought was that they wouldn't be out of place in the Marvel comic movies - it's something I can totally see Iron Man building for his HQ! The other cool thing at night is that there are these rainbow coloured lights that shine down into the square and the glass the buildings are constructed of reflects those colours so it's an ever changing mood. Great addition to the Pittsburgh city skyline, that's for sure! Wonder what it's like to work in them however? (hope a local Pittsburgh Yelper will write about that soon!) My daughter loved the Santa's of the World. She had a great time and what a fantastic way to spend the day. The skating rink and tree added to the wonder of the season! It's a great time for children of all ages!

What makes PPG Tower (and indeed the whole plaza) so remarkable is two-fold.
