I also love seeing the beautiful tree and love how it lights up in all different colors and shapes. It's also a nice space for things like Picklssburgh and other events in Pittsburgh. It's a good space for vendors and booths for people to explore local specialties. I also love looking at PPG's beautiful building. It really makes downtown special.

The tower itself is 40' feet tall. The building is home to PPG headquarters, various offices, and businesses and the plaza has a summer water feature, winter garden & ice skating rink, and more. Pittsburgh has gone from a gritty steel town to a foodie/tech/medical town, rivaling any large city. With those changes, the one thing that stands constant are our bridges and tunnels (made of steel) like the Fort Pitt Tunnels or the Fort Duquesne Bridge. When a city is built around three rivers, you need the bridges and tunnels to get about. The infrastructure was at one time considered state of the art. In fact, some of the first suspension bridges hail from this fine city.

Unfortunately they schedule them sometime that it interferes with a major or holiday weekend and further complicates traffic. So let me start by telling you where this check in is located. It is near the entrance of the Squirrel Hill tunnel. Nearby the Greenfield bridge has been demolished and they are in the process of building a new one. Also adding to the construction list is the Liberty Bridge as well as the Birmingham bridge. Sometimes the bridge or tunnel itself is not under construction by the approaches to it are. Case in point. The Fort Pitt bridge. The Parkway West leading to and from it has had numerous outbound and inbound closures. Although most of these closures occur during evenings and weekends still it makes it hard to find suitable detours without waiting hours to get where you are going. The same is happening as you exit the West End bridge if you want to head to the North Hills. Now they have reopened part of the exit ramp but you need to be able to zoom to merge with the traffic coming in from I 65. On a positive note they did bore a tunnel through the West End circle making it a straight shot from the bridge to get onto Route 51. The bridges and tunnels are unique in their own way. The three bridges headed to the North Side offer great views of the ballparks. Keep in mind however, that if the Pirates have a home game they close the Roberto Clemente bridge for pedestrian access only. Pittsburgh does have a lot of fine bridges and tunnels but it will be nicer to see those horrid orange signs disappear.

This has been a popular meeting spot for decades. In fact ever since it came into existence and though Kaufmann's is long gone (1887-2015-sold to the May Company in 1946), the iconic clock remains. Note-this actually isn't the original clock. The original was installed in the 1800s. This one has been around since 1913 and is an official entry on Atlas Obscura. Did you know it weighs over 2500 pounds and is made of pure bronze? Yep! This historic landmark is a legendary piece of downtown Pittsburgh history. It's something cherished and beloved by all. If you find yourself downtown, get over to the corner of Fifth & Smithfield to meet someone under the Kaufmann's Clock.

The bridge was recently renovated which made the whole overall look and feel more updated while remaining consistent with the other two bridges. It has an ample space to walk across (although the neighboring Roberto Clemente Bridge is generally the most pedestrian friendly of the three). A beautiful bridge to drive or walk over.

It's part of a trio of bridges known as The Sisters (6th Street Bridge; now Roberto Clemente Bridge and the 7th Street Bridge; now Andy Warhol Bridge). Rachel Carson was a marine biologist, environmentalist, and author. She was born in Springdale, PA (just about twenty minutes from the City of Pittsburgh). She worked tirelessly throughout her life to conserve nature and the environment.

It is easy to get on and off and the traffic management seems to work well as I've never been stuck or stopped on this bridge in traffic. It is also a beautiful bridge to walk or bike over. Plenty of room for pedestrians and you can't beat the view! I've taken a double stroller over it, walked it, run it and biked it and it was a pleasant experience every time. Prior to the construction of apartments and condos next to Station Square, this bridge had a lot of traffic from downtown commuters who would park across the river and walk downtown. Now I think parking is more expensive on the Station Square side, so much of the traffic is from those using the trail or just looking for views rather than cheap parking. A great bridge to drive over, walk over or just take pictures of from afar.

Some people have zero respect for historic locations!! Other than that, I recommend walking through this beautiful bridge you can see downtown Pittsburgh and the Steelers Stadium from a distance. All with the same goal of getting through the tunnel and out into the Parkway West (376). Prepare yourself for driver antics. Obviously during peak times it's super busy and crazy. However, it's crazy during off-peak times as well.

It opened in June 1959 and remains too narrow for the amount of traffic trying to cross it. Today, I was in a Pittsburgh city bus heading out of town and it was nearly hilarious watching our bus driver merging from the various on-ramps to get across the Monongahela River. He was only successful because people are scared of buses. Otherwise, I'd probably still be there! With a clearance over the river of 471 feet and a total length of 1207 feet, the bridge is impressively awesome considering that it is over sixty years old. It was an achievement for the time as the first computer-designed bridge in the world. The bridge is painted a bright yellow and there is no toll to cross it in either direction. I'm a fan. The Duquesne Bridge connects to downtown Pittsburgh and 279 for those needing to go north…read more For years (decades), drivers were unable to go north because that part of the bridge was under construction. In fact, the last part of that construction was finished in 1986 when the main part of the bridge had been open since 1963. Dubbed "The Bridge to Nowhere". Like all bridges in Pittsburgh, it's a magnificent piece of infrastructure composed of steel. It's well maintained and is handy for connecting to various parts of the city.

Part of the fun is that the bridge can put you on Rialto, which is notoriously steep and narrow. It can be a headache if someone trys to climb Rialto in a wide truck, but otherwise it's a real part of local flavor and I look forward to taking it. The pedestrian walkway is a real treat and it connects to an amazing bike/pedestrian trail that follows 28.

The bridge build was completed in 1928. One thing I don't like about the bridge is that weird little dip. As soon as you go through the light towards Troy Hill from the Strip, your car does a little dip. It's nothing horrible but it's there. Yinzers know what I'm talking about. If you're checking out Pittsburgh, check out all of the bridges. It is after all, the City of Bridges (one of many names for the city's offerings). FYI, this bridge crosses one of three rivers (Allegheny).
