I lived in Dormont until I was about a year-old. My parents rented an apartment here until they…read moremoved into a family-sized home in Brookline once my sister was conceived. Growing up, I always thought there to be something special about this neighborhood, which oddly enough is considered a suburb despite bordering Brookline and Beechview. Consistently a comfortable area, with so many business here, both recently opened and long-running, I think it's becoming even more livable as time goes on. I'll even predict publicly that Dormont will become the next happening area in the coming years. I strongly considered buying a house in Dormont, but the prices kept me at bay. However, failing to deter me from visiting are Eat 'n Park, The Dor-Stop, Sugar Cafe, Amazing Wok, Tom's Diner, Potomac Bakery, Katana, Mekong, Thai Spoon, Knossos Gyros, Cain's Saloon, Molly's, and Campiti's, all of them in unison offering a meal for every palate, budget, or mood. It doesn't matter if you want a hearty breakfast, a good burger, some piping hot pizza, donuts, sushi, dolmades, black sticky rice, wonton soup, pho, cappuccino or simply some excellent bar grub, Dormont has a restaurant to suit your tastes. Dormont also has two competing (warring?) entertainment shops (MIB Ninja and The Exchange are within doors of each other!), a pair of bookstores, and the wonderfully old-fashioned Hollywood Theatre where one can catch a cult-classic B-movie, the latest critically-acclaimed arthouse feature, or witness and possibly participate in the good-hearted debauchery of The Rocky Horror Picture show which runs fortnightly at 12AM sharp on weekends. An awesome, ever-improving neighborhood that is becoming more diverse by the day, Dormont manages to retain its quintessential South Hills coziness despite adjusting with the times. P.S. Rachel C, our peach of a Community Manager, bought a house in this area recently. Psst. Put up a review, commish!

It's a very clean area with their own fire and police department. Probably the most famous thing in Dormont is the Pool you see when driving along Banksville Road. The houses along Biltmore Ave all look alike, as do most of the houses in the neighborhoods. A really nice business district on Potomac and West Liberty Ave, nice restaurants, nice neighborhood bars, nice people.

Today, I took a parent to the COVID clinic…read more It was the MOST ORGANIZED STREAMLINED EXPERIENCE. Social media said Chick Fil A should be in charge of vaccine distribution if we want to get people vaccinated quickly. Ample parking. Walked in to construction horses which created a registration line with a couple chairs along the path. No confusion on where to go. At the front of the line an "air traffic controller" directed people to open registration staff. Under 2 minutes, we were directed to the vaccine line. At the front of the vaccine line, another "air traffic controller" directed you to an open vaccinator. Any anaphylaxis to medications? Which arm for vaccine? Stand on X on floor. Receive vaccine. Directed to seating - which was paired up with social distancing between pairings. Once our sitting time was over, stopped at discharge to check out. Getting out of car to getting back in car: 22 minutes Great job by Allegheny Fire Academy & Emergency Services personnel, & the lone EMT pulling up the vaccines! We weren't permitted to take pictures - think Ford Assembly Line.

Allegheny County has opened the fire department social hall as a vaccination center for people 65 and older only. Notifications for clinic signup can be sent via e-mail once you sign up with the county. My advice - act fast online because slots fill up within minutes. If you are fortunate to secure an appointment then you will be sent a confirmation email with your time selected on it as well as the date selected. On your scheduled day and time arrive within about a 15 minute time frame to allow yourself time to get inside. Masks are required the whole time you are there and hand sanitizer is available as you enter. Note, although this is a pay lot, parking is free if you are here for the clinic. They only ask if you or the member is over 65, have a scheduled appointment, then you can proceed inside. Once inside you go to the register desk and present your photo id. They don't want to see your health insurance or Medicare card. They will answer any questions you have and then direct you where to stand for the team to provide your injection. They have about 5 stations set up with two people at each station. The team will direct you which station to go to and then you indicate your arm of choice for the vaccine. Allegheny County is offering the Moderna vaccine here. When my turn came I was given an immunization card and a "time" card the latter of which will be surrendered when you leave. I was told that I would receive an email to let me know when to schedule my 2nd dose and if not received by the end of the third week then call the 211 scheduling number and someone would help me. After receiving the shot I went to a large socially distant sitting area with two digital clocks on the wall. My time card had the time of immunization on it and 15 minutes later time which would let me know when I can leave. No photography is allowed anywhere in the building. You are welcome to use electronic devices to pass away the time. Once your exit time arrives take the card up to the people at the desk who will ask you how you are feeling, they take the card, and you can leave. Your immunization card is filled out with the date, time, and type of vaccine received. You must fill out your name and birthdate for your records. I'm glad pretty much everything went smoothly for me and I'm hoping this center as well as the Monroeville location expand so more people can register who really want to get the vaccine. The parking lot is part of a T station park and ride and there is plenty of parking available.

The township offices, library, and community center are all located with the municipal complex off Brownsville Road as you head towards Piney Fork. It is near the Bavarian shopping village that houses a number of of small shops and businesses. The Post Office is in this vicinity as well. South Park Twp has expanded over the course of many years with modern housing and has become a municipality where most young adults settle to purchase homes and start new lives. One downside is that in some of these outlying areas there is no public transportation. People who live here don't seem to mind and are happy to live in a nice suburb. South Park Twp is home to the fairgrounds that once was host to the yearly Allegheny County Fair. That fair ended decades ago but the fairgrounds are still in use for seasonal events. Horseback riding is offered nearby. There are bike trails, a buffalo park, many playgrounds and even a wave pool here. South Park school district has an elementary center, middle school and a high school. The elementary school and high school are in close proximity to one another while the middle school is located on Stewart Road. They provide a fine education and recently received an honor award as a distinguished high school. Their mascot is the Eagle. South Park Twp encompasses a vast area that extends to the golf courses in the park itself all the way over to a district known as Library. The park itself including the BMX track, groves, and two golf courses are reviewed separately. There is however, an attraction worth noting which is Stone Manse which I have yet to visit is part of the Oliver Miller Homestead. This is a historic site which was part of the Whiskey rebellion. It is open seasonally on Sundays only. I am truly amazed every time I go through this area to see how much it has changed for the better over the years.
