The strip district is definitely a Pittsburgh staple and they have good fresh food and fresh fish and there are a lot of experiences to be had. That being said, some of these experiences are overpriced like the indoor putt putt or virtual reality center. If crowds aren't your thing, then you should really go during a weekday, but you won't be getting the full experience because the Pittsburgh crowds are part of what make this place what it is. I am biased, but I've been all over the country and I can say that I really have a fondness for Pittsburghers and this place showcases that. There's an honest energy and sense of community and I think it's well worth the trip and crowds. read more

We walked the Strip District on Valentine's Day. We bought items from a souvenir shop and Grandpa Joe's candy shop, then ate at Phó Van. A lot to see and eat. We wandered into a coffee shop, fresh pasta, kitchen store... We admired all of the Pittsburgh shirts. We admired the chocolate, pastries, wine shops and flowers on the street. Everything is outdoors so I'm glad we came here on a nice sunny morning. Love all of the tchotchkes in the art of the steel wish they shipped. The biscotti Shop was incredible walls of every flavor imaginable, the smells for a wow. The pasta shop had isles and corners off pasta and accoutrements. Penzeys spices was filled to the brim with everything imaginable. The Mediterranean shop had isles Middle Eastern treats. read more

our friend told us to check out this area, especially at night. it was Saturday, it was a long weekend (labor day) but the street was empty...lol though we visited this area couple of times during our visit, and we found it good. famous primanti brothers (the first one) are in this area. it was formerly occupied by warehouses and railroad installations but is now one of the city's main tourist attractions and a scene of lively activity throughout the day. What was once a primarily industrial neighborhood is now packed with restaurants, international markets, museums, and shops. Along the strip and the Allegheny River, there are many fun activities to do and great options for getting your picture clicked. It measures only half a square mile, but it has plenty of attractions and eateries to fill up your day (and your stomach). there are hardly any national chains restaurants, it has more independently run, family-owned restaurants and it gives this neighborhood its charm Pennsylvania market (it's not market, but the name suggests otherwise) is another cool place to hang out. read more

Great food shops, retail stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants, especially along Penn between 17th and 24th, with a handful of places further south on Penn. Also inside The Terminal building which is on Smallman from 16th to 21st. And some places on the cross-streets between those, too. I know there's parking on Penn at 17th and at 20th, some street parking all along The Terminal, and street parking all along Penn. On the weekend, we might just take a ride-share here instead. We spent half a day walking among our favorites spots on Penn, and could have made a whole day without hitting them all! We perused the fresh seafood at Wholey's at 17th, and love it when they offer tasting samples. We grabbed some freshly made crusty Italian bread at Mancini's. Penzey's is one of our favorite brands of spices. We got fresh sausages and cold cuts at Parma. Grabbed our souvenirs and some Steelers gear at a bunch of shops at Penn and 18th. We took home fresh pasta and Italian specialties from Macaroni. There's several restaurants that we like south of 7th, and plenty of cafes and bars and restaurants that we like north of 18th. We stopped into S&D Polish Deli for some flavorful kielbasa and tender fresh-made pierogis at their indoor tables, and of course took some pierogis home too. We came back the next day for the scrumptious old-style thin pancakes at Pamela's. We havent yet gotten to know the restaurants, shops and winery in The Terminal, so we have to save another weekend for that! We love The Strip! read more

In the early 1800s, the Strip District contained many industrial factories and warehouses. Today, the neighborhood is continuing a transformation into a historic market district with food purveyors, restaurants, nightclubs and bars, souvenir shops, office buildings, apartment buildings, etcetera. Even compared to a couple of years ago, the Strip District is experiencing a lot of new construction. Run-down buildings are disappearing, and in their place, fancy tall buildings are being built. I expect this neighborhood to look really nice in a couple more years. Some of my favorite businesses here are the John Heinz History Center, Robert Wholey & Co. market, S&D Polish Deli, and Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor. Parking lots are available in the neighborhood, although finding a spot can be challenging during busy hours, and expect to pay $10 or more. We only had about a half day to spent exploring Pittsburgh, and multiple people said we had to go here - great thriving area, lots of shops and restaurants to explore, lively atmosphere with street musicians and food vendors. Parking is not the easiest to find, so if you don't happen to luck into street parking (or want to spend the time hunting for it), an hourly lot may be the way to go. What surprised me about this area was how early everything closed - we went on a weekend and everything was pretty much shut down other than a couple of bars by 5PM. I thought this might be due to the weather, but Heather's review from August expressed similar confusion about early closure. It sounds like there should be a lot of strip clubs and naked people here, but the clubs and hotties are mostly on E Carson St, although there are lots of hot people around here too. The Strip District is one of the greatest nightlife areas in Pennsylvania, although it's second to East Carson Street when it comes to Pittsburgh itself. There's always a lot of hot people and fun things happening here in the daytime or the evening or late at night. There's a 24-hour Eatery - in fact one of the most famous ones in the country, Primanti Brothers - and then there's also a Peppi's which is really great for sandwiches and probably the best Argentinian place in the country which is Gaucho. There's also a bunch of other good places to eat around here such the Smallman Street Deli and then some. And whatever you do, don't miss the legendary hotcakes at Pamela's P & G Diner. One of the most unique and distinct parts of Pittsburgh is the Strip District. It's a must see for all tourists. I know anyone I bring there is so intrigued and impressed by its uniqueness and variety. Most nationalities are represented in the Strip. You can go to Penn Mac for some amazing Italian Specialties from fine meats and cheeses to pastas and pasta sauces along with produce, bread and spices. You can't go wrong with any of the food you buy there. They also have some amazing extra Virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar direct from Italy. If you like sausages and fine meats, you must check out Parma Sausage. They make their own sausage and it's delicious. They have all different kinds. Go early because I think they close around 3 on Sat and are closed on Sunday. We love Greek Food so we love going to Stamoolis to try out all the amazing Greek Delicacies they have. Greek Risotto is magnificent. We love the lemon and tomato risottos. The Greek Lemon Soup is amazing. They also have Greek Spices which make cooking Greek Food at home so much more authentic. If you like seafood, Wholeys is the place for the freshest most delicious seafood. It has been in the area since my dad was a kid here. They have all kinds of fresh fish and shellfish. They even make their own condiments. The ginger sauce is my favorite. You can buy all kinds of food there. Everyone is really knowledgeable. You can also go to various Asian Markets to buy regional specialties. There is a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern store. Penzeys is great for any type of spice you can imagine. There is a great kitchen store that has lots of cool gadgets. Apart from various types of ethnics stores, You can buy produce from a bunch of different vendors. You can buy gear from all major Pittsburgh Sporting Franchises for a very reasonable price. There is a pottery store. A wine store where you can buy bottles of various regional and global varieties. While staying in downtown Pittsburgh (my hometown), we try to make it over to the Strip District, a "strip" of land along the river that was and still is a thriving whole sale and market district. It was such a beautiful day to do a Tour de Strip District: There is magnificent seafood, sushi, fish sandwiches at the wholesale fish market - Wholey's. We picked up colorful olives, house made pita, and a huge bag of pecorino cheese from Stamoolis Brothers Co. And ended up with the house pasta sauce and fruit nougat from Pennsylvania Macaroni Company. Even though we can get Parma sausage in Columbus, I still love the experience of taking a number and standing in line to order cured meats from the incredibly friendly counter guys at Parma Sausage. The pièce de résistance this day were beautiful Italian meles and sfogliatelle from Colangelo's Bakery & Cafe, which I discovered several years ago on a side street. The Strip District is worth the trek to the outskirts of downtown. It's walkable in nice weather, but you might want to take an Uber or Lyft if you are closer to the heart of downtown or not into strolling a mile or so. Once you are there, the Strip has lots to offer in terms of retail, international and whole sale food markets, greasy spoons, global cuisine, local coffee shops and bars, and several store where you can stock up on all your Stillers gear. read more

I never lived in the Strip District, yet it has always been such an important part of my life. In the early 19th century, the Strip was had mills and factories thanks to its location along the Allegheny River which made for easy transportation of goods and shipping of raw materials. This created a vibrant network of wholesalers--mostly fresh produce, meat, and poultry dealers. My great-grandfather brought his family to America from Sicily to sell produce in the Strip. Not only was this Pittsburgh neighborhood the beginning of my family history in America, but it holds so many more memories for me. I can remember going to the markets as a kid with my gramma. Buying fresh cheese from Penn Mac. And produce from some of the vendors before getting lunch from one of the many restaurants. There's a certain amount of nostalgia walking down the streets or even just fighting to find a parking spot amidst the hustle and bustle. In high school I would sneak out of class to hop down for a coffee or a fresh biscotti from Enrico. It was always so much better to get a slice of pizza for lunch than eat the slop in the cafeteria. Later in life, I loved showing all my college friends the hot spots in the Strip. From haggling over the price of a knock-off Penguins tshirt to watching them revel in a sandwich from the original Primanti's, as Pitt students the Strip was our playground. In fact the first time I ever danced in a gay night club, it was just across the street from where my great-grandfather sold produce. Wholy's fish sandwiches. Breakfast burrito's from DeLuca's. The mishmash of cultures embedded in the black and gold building. It's hard to find a neighborhood in Pittsburgh that makes you feel more proud to be a true yinzer. read more

The Strip District was for sure the most interesting and unique part of Pittsburgh that we visited! With only one visit here - I feel like there's so much more that I need to experience and see to properly get the whole shabang.. But as a first impression, I can say that it's filled with a lot of culture and has a ton of fantastic local businesses that make up the best of the city. A big highlight of the Strip District would probably be its international groceries. 2 or 3 lie on just about every block, and are very interesting to explore. You'll also find some of the most popular restaurants in Pittsburgh, like Pamela's, DeLuca's and Primanti Bros. There's so much more I want to try here!! One of my favorite neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, the Strip has everything you need! Just yesterday I spent 4 hours with friends on the Strip and we only scratched the surface. While there are so many things to do and see, some of my favorite things are the Wholey's fresh seafood market, Salem's Market for all things Middle Eastern and Indian, Smallman's Galley for a rotating food hall, and who could forget the 3-4 different Asian Markets, flower vendors and numerous vendors of Pittsburgh memorabilia. Not to mention they have every kind of prepared food you could want or even I imagine. Italian, Seafood, South American, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, American, Polish, Pizza, Dessert etc... you get my point. Great spot for tourists and locals alike. read more

I really, really should have looked at reviews. This place closes early. Reviews say 4pm, but actually there were a lot of shops closed at 1pm. There were some cool kitchen stores and food shops I really wanted to check out, but we arrived around 3:30, and stuff was already closed. On a recent trip to Pittsburgh, I stopped by The Strip District on a Sunday afternoon. It was easy to find and paid parking was a breeze (free parking took a bit more patience), If you're looking for Steelers gear, there's tons of it here. As we walked up and down the streets, we found many interesting things to look at, eat, and explore. There was a small parking lot that had handcrafted items but what drew my eye was the puppies for adoption. They were adorable! Asian food stores, seafood markets, produce stands, Italian shops, kettle corn vendors...there was so much! For a sweet treat, I stopped by Peace, Love, and Little Donuts for freshly topped mini donuts made to order. It was a very humid day with a storm rolling in so I needed that refreshing lychee fresca from BM inside Smallman Galley. I even found a biscotti shop that has arguably the best and widest selection of biscotti I've ever seen! Great visit and so much more to see! My all time favorite spot in Pittsburgh is the Strip District. Iconic shopping like Wholey's, PennMac and Yinzers. Crave worthy restaurants like Kaya, DiAnoia's and Iron Born Pizza. Furniture and Craft stores like Pergora, Mahla & Co Antiques, Moran Woodworks and Hot Haute Hot. Coffee!! DeFer, La Prima and Allegheny!! And the river walk. I am concerned about the future of the Strip and excited with the changes in the fruit terminal building. I love the cultural markets in the strip district and it makes for a unique shopping trip. I especially enjoy going right before Easter and Christmas because of the special holiday goods that come in. We went today to get the specially wrapped chocolate eggs from Italy that the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company gets. We also go fresh cut cheese, macaroni, candied almonds and many Italian goodies. At Stamoolis's, a Greek shop next door, I found delicious Greek coffee, phyllo dough, incense for my family to bless the house, and figs. The Grandpa Candy store is a fun store for kids (and adults alike). You can fill a box of diverse candies for $5 and find unique finds all over. We also stopped in the Oriental shop to pick up Koala yummies and Panda crunchies (not the proper names) but they are a favorite in our home. You can find Wholley's fish market, a favorite for those who love to find seafood for any occasion (we shop there around the holidays). There's chocolate and coffee shops, pittsburgh popcorn and Steelers gear galore. I always feel like I need more time. There's a Reyes Mexican store we like to go to as well for grocery items. Restaurants abound in the area with too many choices to choose from but it's a unique experience. Parking can be hard to find but there is some free parking if you're lucky! read more

I love coming down to the strip in the mornings and browsing the shops and outside vendors.. for hours on end. Theres so much to see. Roxanne's dried flowers is one of my staple visits each time. I love the selection of dried flowers and soaps, home décor items etc. Grandpa Joes Candy Shop is so fun to browse and great if you need to purchase a gift for someone. There is a wall of flavored pop which is unbelievable and no doubt a must see. There is plenty of black and gold to be purchased at various street vendors and local shops. The pennsylvania macaroni company is also another stop of mine.. cant beat the selection of meat and cheeses. My Sweet Lilly has also become one of my favorite staple spots. Theres always cool music playing and so fun to browse all the sweets - cookies, cakes etc. The staff is helpful too if you have any questions. So many stores to mention. I did a lot of research before my trip to Pittsburgh and saw review after review recommending the Strip District. I wasn't really sure what to expect but I'm SO glad I went. This is a destination not to be overlooked and Pittsburghers are so lucky to have these foodie resources in their own backyard! It's basically one big area where old factories have been turned into stores, bars and restaurants. Vendors line the sidewalks. Stores keep their doors open and offer free tastes. My first stop was the famous Primanti Brothers, which deserves a review all on its own! Today, many of the abandoned warehouses have been renovated into small specialty shops, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. The historic St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, a landmark built in the ornate Polish Cathedral style in 1891, lies in the heart of the Strip District, bringing a touch of Old World architecture. The area has developed into a historic market district with many ethnic food purveyors, some art studios, antique dealers, unique boutiques, and other businesses setting up shop where trains once delivered produce by the ton. The Strip District comes alive primarily on weekends during the summer months when street vendors are selling their wares, the open-air farmer's markets are in full swing, and party-goers sit outside and enjoy a drink. By 1 or so, things have mostly closed down. I made a stop at Stamooli's to sample some cheese and check out the Greek yummies. I also ducked into the classic Pennsylvania Macaroni Co., known as Penn Mac to the legion of local fans. At Penn Mac you can stock up on Italian goods from olive oils to imported San Marzano tomatoes, and a cheese section with its wide selection. One foodie item I was determined to sample was Isaly's chipped ham, which I found at Penn Mac and got a free taste. I'd also heard great things about Mon Aimee Chocolate so I decided to take a look. It's very expensive but most of the chocolate is imported. I was able to find some European chocolate for my chocolate snob hubby though, so that was a perk! I've heard the hot chocolate (in back) is to die for. Didn't give it a try. Eventually I made my way to Wholey's, another highly recommended stop. Seafood is the draw. If it's any indication how fresh the produce is at Wholey's, the on-site sushi chef uses tuna, yellowtail and salmon straight from the ice-packed samples on display. Wholey's is a locally-owned supermarket and wholesale company, where the aisles are packed with discerning shoppers. I sampled some soup and it was amazing!! Oh how I wish we had something like this in Lincoln. There were many items I wanted to take home. In the early 19th century, the Strip District was home to many mills and factories as its location along the Allegheny River made for easy transportation of goods and shipping of raw materials. It was the home of the Fort Pitt Foundry, source of large cannon before and during the American Civil War, including a 20-inch bore Rodman Gun. Early tenants of the Strip District included U.S. Steel, Westinghouse, The Pittsburgh Reduction Company (ALCOA), and later The H.J. Heinz Company, famous ketchup and condiment manufacturer. The shipping infrastructure built around the manufacturing companies naturally lead to an increase in other types of merchants setting up shop in the Strip. By the early 20th century the Strip District became a vibrant network of wholesalers--mostly fresh produce, meat, and poultry dealers. Soon, auction houses rose around the wholesale warehouses and many restaurants and grocery stores were built to feed hungry shift workers at any hour of the day. By the 1920s, the Strip District was the economic center of Pittsburgh. read more
