As a native Pittsburgher, I've known about the West End Overlook but somehow it has taken me almost 40 years to get there and admire the view. I decided one chilly spring morning to wake up early and drive over to take in the sunrise. The park itself is small but clean, wouldn't be a bad meeting place for a picnic when the weather is warmer. It's also relatively easy to find and there's even a parking lot. What really makes this a 5 star location is that view. From the West End Overlook, you get a head on picture of the city from the point where the three rivers meet. The sound of traffic zooming across the bridges is dulled only by the chirping of the birds as the day begins. Watching the sun rise over the hill and shine on our fair city was one of the most majestic scenes. And even though I've lived in Pittsburgh my entire life and viewed the city from several different angles, I think this might now be my favorite. I can't wait to take my out-of-town guests here and show it off.

Nice little entry way to the overlook

Beautiful overlook from the West End of Pittsburgh. Leading you to the scenic view is a vine and greenery walk through. Along the way are benches for you take in the nature that surrounds you. Once you reach the top of the ramp, Pittsburgh and the North Shore are right there! Pictures are great but nothing does this view justice like being there to soaking it all in. There is a strip of street parking available as well as a small lot. Unlike the Mt. Washington overlook, this one edges out a neighborhood. So you'll drive through a residential area before reaching the overlook. I went on a Sunday morning, and it was completely empty. I'm sure the nighttime sees more visitors.

    View from the overlook.

It's not as famous as Mt. Washington, and you don't get to ride the Inclines up here. But the view of downtown is expansive, and the neighborhood is charming. We spent July 4 evening here mingling with the park's friendly, chatty, neighbors, their kids and dogs in tow. Also more than a few photographers with their tripods and giant DSLRs, who were also happy to trade tips on how to shoot fireworks. Fireworks tip: get here a couple hours early to stake out a good spot!

Gorgeous park. AMAZING view. I believe the view from this park is better than Mount Washington. It's less crowded, plentiful parking and well.. the pictures speak for themselves! MUST SEE.

I truly believe this one is better than the Mt Washington. Although Mt Washington has a good view (not as good of course), it's more of a tourist location feel. At West End, it's more of a quiet park with a more breathtaking view of the perfect golden triangle. We stood there for 5 minutes speechless and then hung out for about 45 minutes-- in the cold. We loved it and can't wait to head there for summer time. I'll upload my amazing pictures after work ;)

This place is not as popular as Duquesne Incline or the Monongahela Incline but the view here is just as beautiful just in a different angle. It's a must visit place whether you're from the area or traveling. There are not that many people here so you won't have a problem getting that perfect picture with people in the way. There is plenty of free parking available.

Love it when this place at nighttime. I love the city lights

One of my favorite views of Pittsburgh, and a great place to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July!

This truly is a great place to view the 4th of July Fireworks. Great view, not too many people, security, and live music.

If you're from the Crafton area, you're probably aware of Industrial Highway, a.k.a. "The Highway…read moreto Nowhere". I was reminded of this highway yesterday when I stopped for lunch at nearby Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Industrial Highway is another one of those quirky little incomplete projects that have always fascinated me. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the road, it's an approximately .6-mile long stretch of highway that's built to expressway standards. It's actually in the Fairywood section of the city and it runs from Roswell Drive to Beechnut Drive. It looks like it may have been intended to start Someplace and go Somewhere by way of Something. But it doesn't and therein lies the mystery. Where was this highway intended to go? According to the website above, "The roadway was to run from PA 60 just east of the Thornburg Bridge northwards along Chartiers Creek to PA 51 in the Esplen Neighborhood that borders the town of McKees Rocks." If that was true, what would be the point of building an expressway connecting Crafton with McKees Rocks? Was it to serve the light industrial park? Was it intended to be a bypass around Broadhead Manor, now abandoned but once one of the most dangerous public housing projects? Whatever the case may be, the highway is not abandoned. You can drive on it, although why would you? The highway seems to have no reason to exist and could be closed because the area streets also serve the industrial park. Pennsylvania has a whole bunch of stalled, abandoned, and never started public works projects and this is one of the more obscure ones.

We began with the meatball appetizer with Alex's delicious marina and a scoop of creamy ricotta cheese..yummy! My wife had Cod and beans..not on the menu..but Alex made it for her. The Cod was flakey, tender and delicately seasoned..so tasty. I had the veal francaise , lightly breaded and sautéed with hint of lemon...I also ordered a side of sautéed green and red peppers.. it was one of the best meals I've had! If you haven't been there you're missing an Italian gem! Make sure to make reservations! You'll enjoy it!

The service was great, our server was so kind & funny. We ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer & chicken Marsala as the entree. Bruschetta was phenomenal, one of my favorites. The Marsala was also good, definitely on the sweeter side (my husband wasn't crazy about). We also ordered cannolis to go which were decent, but not my favorite. I'm giving it 3 stars because of all the add-on charges. $10 corking fee, $5 charge to split our meal, $7 charge to substitute Marsala sauce instead of marinara. The overall cost just didn't justify the experience.
