    Tribute to Children in PIttsburgh
    Bruce K.

Not only is there a statue of the great Mister Rogers, but there's a plaque and even a looped audio recording. Fred Rogers terrific TV show, sneakers and cardigan and all, ran from 1968 to 2003. The plaque reminds us that he won four Emmys, induction into the Television Hall of Fame, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and over 40 honorary degrees. Mister Rogers is a local native, born not far away in Latrobe and was a graduate of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He died here in Pittsburgh in 2003. When I was here there were a couple of kids trying (and failing) to skateboard on one of the arches. Not sure what that was all about.

As is no doubt evident from my photo, I'm a big fan of the Tribute to Children, AKA the Fred Rogers statue. This piece of public art celebrates one of Pittsburgh's best-known denizens, whose popular children's show Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was produced at local public television station WQED and ran on public television nationwide during the 1980s and 1990s. Though Fred Rogers is sadly no longer with us, many of us who grew up watching his show remember the song "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," which ended with "won't you be my neighbor?," a reminder that we are all, in fact, neighbors of the human race. Enough with the history lesson, though--let's get back to the statue itself. While I'm not sure exactly how tall it stands, it's large enough that fully grown adults like me can climb up and sit in its lap, meanwhile enjoying a great view of the Golden Triangle across the river. One caveat, however, is that the statue tends to heat up quite a bit during hot summer days due to its metal coating, so I recommend testing it out its temperature with a finger beforehand. Even if it's too hot for direct contact, simply standing in front of it makes for a great photo op, as well. Speaking of great photo ops, the platform on which the statue stands offers a breathtaking vista of the river confluence and downtown. As a result, it's a popular location for photos of bridal parties, who often take advantage of it during the weekend. As mentioned in another review, this platform and its stone backdrop was once part of a bridge and was nicely repurposed, similar to many other such structures in Pittsburgh. Whenever I go cycling on the North Shore trail or kayaking downstream, I enjoy taking a long glance at this statue and mentally saluting the late Fred Rogers. Occasionally, I stop to take in the view and sit in the statue's lap, taking a moment to contemplate how I can be a better neighbor to my fellow citizens.

My first clue was that I discovered this museum was not specific to Pittsburgh. In fact, it's part of a privately owned museum chain, one of over sixty identical museums across over 25 countries. I came here because I had a free morning trying to avoid the wintry weather. I decided to make stops on the North Shore along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Clearly, not every stop is a landmark. This museum appears to be targeted to either young families with hyperactive kids and Instagram-addicted tourists. Falling somewhat into the latter category, I found the admission rather steep at $25 for what looked to be a relatively small scale space. I paid that same amount for both Carnegie Museums (Art and Natural History). This museum consisted of a series of interactive exhibits that create optical illusions. There were several spinning wheels, tilted spaces, distorted rooms, and mirrored illusions. My walkthrough lasted around fifteen minutes. Kids were anxious to go through the exhibits at breakneck speed, and my attention span was rarely stimulated by the exhibits. In visiting this museum, at least I won't be curious about the sixty other Museums of Illusions. RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh? I love the main building and how the exhibits are constantly changing, while some of the iconic spaces--like the mirror rooms--remain favorites that you can always count on seeing again. During this visit, I noticed the Dollhouse building has been completely redone. The new exhibit is much darker and heavier in tone, which honestly made me a little disappointed since the dollhouse installation used to be a staple of my visits and something I always looked forward to. The third building had construction going on on the first floor, but from what I could see it looks like it's going to be an incredible new display once it's finished. I was also a little sad to see the delayed recorder projector piece gone, but the new installation in its place was still interesting. One thing I still absolutely love is the water flowing down the handrails--it's such a small detail but always one of my favorite parts of the experience. Overall, it's still a place I enjoy visiting and seeing how the exhibits evolve over time.

For $75 we didn't know what to expect, but we expected our experience to be at least double what those who purchased general admission received. Not quite. When we arrived we received a wrist band that gave us access to the VIP lounge where there were supposed to be savory "heavy" appetizers. While the cheese plates were beautiful, the cheese was very standard, lots of yellow and white cubes, and the occasional wedge of brie. There were 2-3 other bite sized apps, but we were left underwhelmed. Not to worry though...we didn't come there for the apps anyway, we came for the CHOCOLATE! Well...that's when it all went awry. There were lines. Not just a few. There were lines everywhere. And they were long, and they didn't move. As we looked over the balcony we could see huge crowds in the grand lobby so we opted to get in line on the 3rd floor. After 45 minutes, we made it to the chocolate beer station and picked up one biscotti from Enrico Biscotti. While the biscotti was delicious, 45 minutes is a little crazy. We ended up passing up the chocolate beer and grabbed a toothpick with a delicious bite from Senti before making our way down to the second floor. This is when it all went from bad to worse. We waited in line for another hour. This time for a few chocolate truffles and a shot of wigle whiskey. By this time everyone around us was so equally frustrated it wasn't even fun anymore. With about 20 minutes to spare we made our way down to the grand lobby and thank goodness for Cioppinos and the Milkshake Factory!! These people were running a well oiled machine and pumping out hearty portions of flourless chocolate cake, milkshakes, and chocolate candy by the bowlful. And the line was only about 10 minutes. Several of the other stations by other restaurants were already empty by the time we made it out of the lines, so I cannot comment on what I missed...but for a $75 ticket it was a definite disappointment that I spent 75% of my time standing in line. I hope if this event continues next year they either restrict the ticket sales, or move to a different venue that can accommodate such a big crowd.

The place has a wide open and welcoming environment. Sure it gets busy, but you never feel without space to stretch out. The bowing, the games, and the slides are all great. Lots of fun. And tons of "free" stuff to do in there. I enjoy that you can bring in outside food. I wish that they had napkins or something for you, but not a big deal! The beer variety is great and the cocktails are pretty good. Can you tell I'm eager to get to the bad? It's the service. Mainly the bar service. This is a sample size of probably 10+ times being here and without a doubt, most of the bartenders are miserable, not polite, always act as if you are inconveniencing them. It's wild. It's not always the same person. I see new bartenders all the time there and without fail, they are really bad. The woman who was working the first floor main bar on Saturday 1/17 around 1:30pm was by far the worst. She was so bad that I'm at a breaking point and I need to avoid this place for awhile. Pins Mechanical - please fix this culture of bad service. It's a shame and unnecessary.
