Caution on using Carroll Service - what was communicated and what happened are two completely…read moredifferent things: I called Gabe Carroll on a Friday after seeing his Yelp reviews, looking for a quote on electrical work at a rental property -- we have renters moving in and wanted to make sure everything was up to code and safe. Gabe said he could come out that Monday to provide a quote, and mentioned I'd get a message from an automated system but told me to ignore it, so I did. Monday morning, one of his workers arrived before Gabe and began pulling out switches and other items before any quote had been given or fees discussed. My son was the only one home at the time. Gabe arrived shortly after to assess the work needed, then called me to walk through what he'd found and said I'd have a quote to review within a few minutes. When the quote arrived, it included a $149 service fee and a $159 diagnostic fee in addition to the repair estimate -- none of which had been mentioned to me beforehand. When I questioned this, Gabe said I had agreed to the fees via the automated message -- the same message he'd told me to ignore, and which I never opened. He sent a screenshot of a calendar entry with a checkmark as "proof" of my agreement. I had gotten quotes from other electricians at no cost, which is what I expected here too, so I could compare pricing fairly before committing to work. When I pushed back on the fees, Gabe became confrontational: he called the police (who, after speaking with him, apologized for the call and left), threatened to send my account to collections, and contacted city code enforcement about violations he'd found. I'm now working directly with the inspector on those items, which is exactly the kind of oversight I wanted a professional's help with in the first place. When I mentioned I'd be leaving a review, Gabe said he'd sue me for slander. My advice: get any fees confirmed in writing before agreeing to a "quote" visit, and consider getting quotes elsewhere -- several other local electricians will do this at no charge and not be so hostile in the interactions.

I was impressed with the quick response. I asked for the cost to replace a breaker switch. She said she couldn't provide an estimate but the service visit was $75. (waived if work was done). We proceeded and Aaron (the owner of Straight Up) came to our house the next day. He gave us a quote for replacing the breaker switch (which we decided to do on our own since we had done so previously) - and we also found out we had a bad GFCI (from power washing the day before). His estimate to replace was $350. I thought that sounded way too high and he came down in price to $265. When replacing the initial GFCI did not fix the problem, Aaron started looking around and found another bad GFCI (replaced in the last 2 years with one from Lowe's). Aaron said to not trust any GFCIs from Lowe's or Home Depot as the quality is poor. He replaced that one and we asked him if he could check out pool light - another bad GFCI replaced (he had to go get another one). The total for replacing (not rewiring just replacing) 3 GFCI outlets was $650. That was the heavily "discounted" amount! When Aaron left, I called 2 local, reputable electricians (I would recommend Fox Electric if you need an electrician). Both companies said the total job (with their $150 service visit) would have cost no more than $300-400 (on the high end). So I am giving 2 stars to Straight Up for showing up quickly - but would NOT recommend. When I told Aaron about the comments from the other electric comapanies he said he would match their price if I had them come out and provide and estimate. I had already called them and he could have done the same thing if he truly cared about reasonable and fair pricing.

The permitting process with the city took a while to work through, and JSR stayed on it the whole time. Alecia, the office manager, sent me regular updates for weeks without me ever having to ask. When things needed a nudge, Charles, the owner and master electrician, went down to the permit office in person to keep it moving. Dani in scheduling kept the appointments and applications on track. Matt and Gage, my installers, knocked out all the work in a single day. He helped us install a transfer switch and exterior inlet plug for our generator so we can safely power our home during outages, and also rewired several breakers to create a dedicated group of emergency-use circuits that the generator would run. The level of knowledge and care he brought to this project was exceptional. Justin was very generous with his vast knowledge in the area. He took the time to thoroughly explain not just what he was installing, but why, and went above and beyond by educating us on generator best practices, including important dos and don'ts for safe operation. I definitely felt much more confident in my ability to keep our house running for my family than I did prior. He was also extremely friendly, kind, and easy to work with from start to finish. Scheduling was simple, he was very accommodating to our availability, and his work was fast yet meticulous. He ran multiple dry runs with our generator to ensure every targeted breaker was functioning properly, and even took the panel back off to include an additional circuit I initially didn't think would be necessary, but ultimately agreed was important for emergency situations.
