Last Thursday, my 1970's GE electrical panel (on the outside of the house) failed in a specular fashion due to several shorts: it "exploded" 5 - 7 times before the lights in my entire home flickered and went out leaving a smoldering black mess of "cooked" panel switches. The local fire department came over to assess the situation and to summon encore to disconnect power to the entire home. This left me without power over the weekend and with the task of finding a good electrician to quickly fix the problem. My first inclination was to contact the "big boys" (Milestone Electric, A#1 Air, etc.) and obtain two estimates. I also obtained estimates from two other less known electricians including Mighty Volt Electric. The "big boys" estimates were thousands more than Mighty Volt Electric and the remaining estimate was "too low" and concerned me because they came over, quickly looked over the damage and almost immediately quoted me a price without explaining much of anything. Additionally, I was told that the wall in my kitchen would have to be opened (note that the electrical panel was on the outside of the home opposite the kitchen). I did not get "good vibes" from this electrician despite the low cost. Mighty Volt Electric, on the other hand, did the opposite. Justin and Andrew took the time to carefully examine the situation, explain to me what needed to be done and then give me an estimate with a complete breakdown of work items which didn't include making a hole in my kitchen walls. But more important, the estimate came out less than the "big boys" because they are a family run business with very low overhead costs. Additionally, Justin (the owner of the business) is someone who used to work for the "big boys" and has a lot of experience working on big jobs like mine. Because of this, my decision to go with Mighty Volt Electric was a "no brainer". Work was done on the following Monday and Justin took time over the weekend to plan for the work including sending me a revised estimate. On Monday, Justin and Andrew showed up on time and before the end of the day, I had power. When it seemed that they had done everything that needed to be done, Justin and Andrew pointed out the likely cause of the panel failure and recommended that I contact my homeowners insurance company, which I did. To aid in securing a reimbursement, Justin wrote a very detailed and comprehensive invoice with before and after pictures of the electrical panel and an explanation of the cause of the failure. With this information provided to my homeowners insurance, this was quickly accepted as a valid cause for reimbursement which is currently being investigated. Justin is great! My dryer would run but no heat. Maytag said my dryer was fine it was electrical. I thought it was the outlet because I live in a 99 year old home. Justin found my cord was melting and I needed an outlet and cord! He gave me a great price! He is very kind and even added a clip which he said should have been added at time of installation of the dryer. I am so happy now. I can't believe I am excited about washing and drying clothes. They came out and gave us a quote for shop work of $27,500 & charged a $60 estimate fee. We had three other companies that gave us quotes for the same work charging between $6000 - $6800. They did NOT charge us for the estimate. This seems very unethical to us. read more
