Poway Kenpo Karate has a long history in the city of Poway since 1984! From what started out as 600 sq. ft. has now expanded to 3000 sq. ft. Not only has it expanded in size, but also in what it has to offer. For example, it is the home of The Boxing Club, as well as, their recent and newly added Poway MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. At Poway MMA you can compete, train, and/or learn (MMA, pankration, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, combat sambo, boxing, wrestling). Not only does this place have a boxing ring, it also has a full octagon cage. Most importantly, it is a clean, safe and friendly environment. There are several things I appreciate about this place: (1) It offers a wide variety of classes for kids, families, and adults (i.e., pilates, kenpo karate, kickboxing, etc.). (2) This place is that it is family owned by Mr. Barry Barker and they are very involved with the community. (3) The location is convenient, as it is centrally located. As most other gyms you would have to travel far distances for. (4) The trainers and coaches are awesome!

On the night of the advanced brown belt test. I passed it at 50 years old!

Just tested for my 1st degree Brown Belt at 50.. Actually I am now 51. Being the oldest person in my class isn't an issue. Well sometimes it is a cardio issue but that is why I am there. This is by and far the best martial arts studio in San Diego. If you are thinking of enrolling for yourself or for your kids you need to check it out... Master Barry Barker is one of the best martial artists in San Diego County and in the State... but even better is the skills you will learn. Can't say enough and if I am ready I will finally test for my black belt this summer after 9 years of training... I have loved every minute of it. This is like home.

On top of that, the gym culture is incredibly accepting. New people are welcomed, nobody has an ego, and it feels like a team. As a woman in a male-dominated sport, I really appreciate how respectful and comfortable the environment is. I always feel safe, supported, and encouraged to push myself :)

TLDR: I've trained for about 10 years in my pre-20s era and have been training an additional 5 in my near 40 era. I am a refugee of a place that closed in Kearney Mesa and I am super happy to have found a new home at Rebellion! You can train the well known Muay Thai+BJJ BUT ALSO GET THE ILLUSTRIOUS JUDO AS WELL! ALL IN ONE ROOF! Coaches: Awesome and helpful for everyone of all skill levels Facility: Perfect balance of equipment and space to do stuff Community: Welcoming, friendly, respectful but also they do not bow to others unnecessarily - as a proper martial arts place will instill the same understanding of mutual respect between people, the give and take and is represented by the staff and coaches. Hard thing to find these days in the world. Intensity: Just right, you don't have to fear of physically overtraining here because you took 1 extra class during the week. You get a good sweat going, learn solid techniques and are ready to come back the next day feeling better and ready to learn more! Lastly - Fight Gym or Martial Arts place?: A balance of both, you'll learn technique at the intensity level you are comfortable at AND you won't be pushed to your physical limits every class resulting in overtraining. This is a place to come to and come often so you can get better, do you want to compete? Let the coaches know! Do you want to just learn? Let the coaches know! The journey is in your hands and everyone, literally everyone is willing to help. Finally a place without the crazy egos or "over friendly sales" aspect I've been through a ringer looking for places to train my love for Judo and Muay Thai and this place has it all!

I started training here in February, coming off a year hiatus from muay thai due to an ACL tear. Before I even started my first class, I immediatley felt welcomed. Kru (Coach) Brian introduced himself right away and got to know me and my skill level. In the almost seven years since I started training, I have never had a muay thai coach deliver instruction with such detail, but in a way that is understandable to all levels of students present in the class. Brian is extremely perceptive at observing movement and identifying exactly what needs to be adjusted to help everyone perfect the technique we are working on, and he is really good at explaining things in multiple ways. He is a really great teacher, as well as an awesome fighter too! The classes are structured in a way where we build upon techniques over the week (or longer term), which is great for developing your skillset, and also wonderful for refining your technique if you've been in the game for a while. Along with great instruction, the gym is very much absent of any "ego"...but don't assume this means the other students aren't serious about the sport. There is a group of badass fighters that train here, and they are happy to train with others at all levels. Everyone is genuinely friendly, which gives the gym a great vibe and makes me look forward to heading to the gym as often as possible. Final, but important notes: all equipment in the gym is in great condition and the gym is very clean. They also recently started a strength and conditioning program. These have been awesome workouts thus far! If you're looking for a place to train muay thai and/or get in shape, whether you are new to the sport or an experienced pro, you need to check out Prime.
