I've trained with Sherman since before the gym existed. Excellent place to train and learn the fundamentals of boxing.

My 9 year old son and I have been training at Maxwell's for the past 2 years, and we couldn't have been happier with the training, the instructors and the atmosphere. And its a real gym- there are real boxers, who compete in real fights, that train at this gym! You can get great exercise and real cardio, while actually really learning to box. We have both been learning a lot, and have really enjoyed the people and the classes. We started doing real sparring about 6 months ago, and its awesome. I was new to San Diego and this place made this foreign city feel like home. I love the hard work and dedication all the coaches put into this gym especially Coach Alvin and Sherman. I see these two every time I'm there without fail, and they train their students with so much heart and grit. Even though times are tough right now, they strive to find new and innovative ways for the community to continue to grow and work out. Took my teenage son for a trial class. I watched part of their hour-long class - it's a real training! My son's t shirt was soaked by the end of the class. Been taking my son here for just over a year now... Coach Sherman and staff have delivered nothing but superb coaching! I'm truly impressed by the skill growth and teamwork of all the kids (boys AND GIRLS)! As well as the teen to adult classes! It's really a great environment overall! Maxwell's is fully equipped for boxing but also has tools and equipment for strength and conditioning (free weights, stationary bike, power rack for bar lifts, etc..) There's also "Beats & Boxing" nights where the class(es) happen with LIVE DJ's mixing for your audio pleasure! They have also hosted summer boxing camps and events like Ladies Night! We moved to Rancho Bernardo in January and I was searching for a boxing gym close to my new place. I discovered Maxwell's Boxing gym. This was the real thing. Real boxing, not just hitting a punching bag for fitness, but learning how to hit it correctly and most important, the coaches teach you defense. You take everything that you learn and you get to spar with others in class. The coaches are amazing and extremely knowledgeable. The gym monthly membership fee is very reasonable. I am always surprised by how fast the time goes by in class. The other members of the gym are all down to earth and friendly. My 15 year old daughter and I have been taking classes for nearly a year. My daughter always got her best friend to join too. Initially, I thought boxing was for men and didn't think I would see myself doing this long term but I was wrong. The workouts are tough but the more you go, they don't get easier but different with every challenge. I do feel myself having more stamina, endurance, stronger and lean. 100%, I love this gym! Every coach I've encountered at Maxwell's Boxing is personally invested in each of their members' well-being. For someone like myself that has had memberships at places like, 24 Hour Fitness or Chuze, this is very important. Sometimes its hard to stay on board with staying fit and being healthy, but this place makes me truly want to be at my best. Maxwell's Boxing also provides personal training, not only in boxing. If you have a fitness goal in mind, they have a coach that can help you achieve that goal. I have been working with Coach Ryan Acain for almost 3 months now on my strength training, and feel extremely good. I told him my fitness goal, and he tailored a program specifically for me. He doesn't push me to break me, he pushes me to be the healthiest I can be, and that is more than I can ask for. Maxwell's Boxing also has a great program for kids. Having been to the gym many times, and seen the faces of the kids that are in their program, I can assure you they LOVE IT! It almost makes me wish I could takes a kids class too! LOL!! I joined Maxwell's boxing in late Jan 2018 and it was best decision ever. I came for one of the free nights work outs they offer for people to try it out and... I absolutely fell in love immediately! Besides the fact that Maxwell's offers top notch trainings, has amazing and well-skilled coaches, is he place to truly grow mentally and physically. Their mission and etiquette amazes me every day: 1.Every day/ week there is new schedule with who is teaching what classes, so it is never boring. 2. The classes are well thought where different type of fighters , with different body weights and physical health can work together. During each class coach goes around and corrects, practice with everyone on some rounds. 3. Everyone motivates each team mate and works out with all energy and passion from within our hearts. 4. Most amazing thing that touched my heart was the sheet with the rules where they want to ensure positivity and good vibes all around! Besides an amazing boxing deal for just $70/month with unlimited classes/ coaches available you become part of amazing family. I used to work out in the gym by myself, and needed a change, that free boxing class was my life changing decision. Besides that they have open gym hours where you can come and work out by yourself, and they have weights, and squat racks to use as well, so it is truly 3 in 1 deal. I can openly say that you need to try it and it's all worth it. Don't be afraid what shape you are in, coaches will help you to get where you want to be and each session you are becoming stronger and faster. Coach Sherman is the owner and he started it couple years ago in his backyard (amazing story, you have to ask him and read on the website) so you can tell what he does comes straight from his heart! On one of our classes he said; " the hardest part is to show up", and he is right once you come, the energy is there and you are ready to conquer your work out! So far I can't say I dislike any of the coaches! All of them are amazing, for example: I love Coach Jeremy"/ Saturday's classes where he focuses on form, speed and with his education in physical therapy always ends with great stretching. Coach Alex is great at speed and foot work, coach Heidi is amazing at making it interesting and pushing with more complex combo movements, and also specializes in nutrition if you need some tips or help with ur nutrition plan she is your gal. Coach Benigno is great at speed, form and compound movements. Last, but not least, Coach Sherman is Amaaazing at correcting form, great warm ups, and High intensity intervals that literally get every body part to work! Oh and coach Henry (my first class was with him, and I will never forget the amazing endorphins he caused me, ) his warm ups are killers, but hey nothing better than well warmed up body to do boxing! As you see, everyone has their strengths and so it makes the classes amazing!! Marielle is amazing at showing people moves, coaching and pushing. If you are a shy female trying to try it out, ask for her. She will help you with you hand wraps, show around and answer all your questions, and when in the ring, she is great at pushing you to finish strong! I partnered with her during some classes, and she always pushes me, which I cannot be thankful enough for! As you see it is worth every penny! Most other places charge contract monthly fees and u have to pay extra for that high end coaching (on top of the monthly fee( ) but here it's is part of becoming a family and work towards your best self every day- trust me I have done my research!;) Blessed for the day I came and joined Maxwell's family. In little under 3 months, I am Feeling stronger, and faster each day, and most importantly I am so excited for my work outs and my smile doesn't disappear. Maxwell's Boxing really is the best place to box in San Diego! When I returned to San Diego recently after a few years of being away, it felt like stepping into a new city again. I had been boxing at a Title Boxing Club for almost a year in another location, but I was ready to put on my boxing gloves at a new place with a different type of feel. What makes Maxwell's so special is that this gym does not have a huge corporate feel to it. I feel like more than just a number here. The staff members are welcoming, and they know you by name. I'm always greeted by hugs and fist bumps every time I enter the gym! The other members are super friendly and open as well. They really care about your technique and form while boxing, so that's what they'll teach you on your first day and throughout your time here. Your first class is free, and every new member will get a bit of an orientation session with the head coach, who will teach you some of the basics before you get thrown into the ring with everyone else. You never know what to expect for every class, even if you're working with the same coach. This can be both a pleasant and painful surprise, but always know that you're in for a workout that will keep you sweating the whole time. Each member gets their own unique set of combos displayed on their bulletin board, which gives you something new to work on every month. I like how the partner work gives you a chance to work with someone new, and the star program they've recently implemented will let you get to know your own strengths and challenges. Maxwell's is definitely a must-try gym with an affordable monthly membership! From day 1, Sherman (who is the head boxing coach/owner of the gym) has always made me feel welcomed. He always focuses on form and will not put you in any situation that you are not ready for or uncomfortable doing. Sherman and the rest of the coaches treat EVERY student like they are their top priority regardless of their boxing skill/level. Best boxing place in San Diego. Not only do you get a phenomenal workout if you want to lose weight or stay in shape but proper technique, so that you know you are doing it right. This is not a cardio style boxing gym where they don't teach you proper technique (however you get the same cardio workout you would from one of those gyms). The coaches know what they are doing and have a passion for boxing. Which in turn reduces the possibility of injury. People of all levels workout at the gym so it's not intimidating for the newbie. Not to mention the price is lower than most other gyms. I highly recommend it to anyone who want to get into shape, learn how to box properly or get further training on your existing boxing skill set. read more

I can honestly say that this is a great boxing gym! I would highly recommend this facility to anyone, whether you are a beginner or a more experienced boxer. I used their 1 free day trial class and was hooked. Coach Sherman and Ryan definitely know what they are doing. The have a nice big ring in the middle of the gym and just about every piece of boxing equipment you can think of. Their 1 hour of classes will definitely get you into shape! Sparring nights are the best. I also believe they have the best membership rates in SD. I also love how this place originated in the coaches backyard. I have been going to Maxwell's boxing since September and have already lost 50lbs!!! The workouts are really great and all the coaches are excellent at teaching beginner boxers all the way to advance boxers. They have multiple classes offered throughout the day and it's a very family oriented gym. If you are looking to an amazing place to workout and learn proper boxing techniques. This gym and coach Sherman have literally changed my life!! I feel stronger than I ever been and continue to progress.
